Cory and I will be in here for our lunch hour again, ready to get fired up for Game 2 tonight. Do you think Ruutu or Cole will play? If they can't, who should?

It really depends on what Mo wants to bring to the ice, both Cole and Rutuu are very physical players and are scorers (even though during the playoffs they’ve been pretty quite).
I still want to know where all the “Mo must go” folks are?? :)
Where are the "Mo must go" folks?

Surely you jest! He’s has some of the most memorable lines ever, from “he’s no Nick Wallin” when asked about Ronnie Francis’ OT GWG in Game one SCF 2002 against the Wings. Classic. Mo gives good face.
Smug and sarcastic would be Linda Ruff.
Go Canes!
The whole “he’s no Nick Wallin” line is very smug and sarcastic. I meant it as a compliment. I love it.
I love his sound-bytes
I think it’s easy for the national press to misinterpret Mo if they haven’t heard how often he uses his wit to respond to difficult or stupid questions. The Sore Knuckles reply he made when asked about Scott Walker after the A-Ward punch got Mo demonized because it wasn’t apologetic in tone. He’s got to be careful on a national stage.
But then, who cares what the press thinks? Let’s just keep our guys believing and know that, in addtion to knowing how to play the game and set the lines, Mo is apparently a pretty decent sports shrink.
Go Mo!

As far as the sore knuckles comment goes...
I think Mo was a little peeved at how no one reported once how Ward and especially Chara were beating the crap out of Canes players after the play but after this one punch they were all over Walker.
certainly
I watched that press conference lafter Game 5 live on NHL channel and the question from the reporter (which never got replayed later) had a very nasty insinuating tone to it, clearly loving that the Canes had made this kind of mistake and taking the chance to rub Mo’s face in it. I’m sure this was about as nice as response as Mo could muster and given what we know now about Scotty’s wife, I think it was excellent and intended more for Scotty’s ears than the National media.
And really, like I said above, Mo’s job is to take care of the team and win games. He’s not trying to get elected to anything or even win popularity contests. For that, I take my hat off to him.

I liked the one where they were having problems with the mic (forget if was in NJ or BOS) and were testing it by saying 1, 2, 3 and Mo jokingling asked if the guy was counting the number of opportunties the Canes gave up that night.
How many coaches in the league would joke about a bad lose like that?
after Game 1 in Boston
Tech crew guys were counting into the teens before Mo came to the mike, He told the press that he wondered if maybe they were counting the turnovers the Canes gave up. I agree – how can you not love this guy?
by Carolyn Christians on May 21, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions
The smuggest coach in all of sports is Mike Krzyzewski
Smug is not a good thing and Mike Krzyzewski is the definition of smug. Paul Maurice is tongue-in-cheek. He’s very good natured and looking to make everyone laugh, or to get under the opposing teams skin with his comments. Krzyzewski teaches his players to maim through clandestinely intentional elbows and something looks to always stink, like his upper lip.

Wow...
That is the most biased baseless comment I have read on this blog and it has nothing to do with hockey. Haha. Take your Tarheel ignorance to a college basketball blog please. Coach K is a great basketball coach, one of the biggest philanthropists in all of basketball, and a good mentor. Just ask any of the NBA players who won gold medals under his tutelage. I’d say you could ask Duke players as well, but you’d probably rather lynch them.
Yeah, lets just keep this to hockey. Rather lynch them? WTF are you talking about?
by Iggy Reilly on May 21, 2009 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know any basketball players who could last a minute in a hockey game…. so let’s end that discussion….
by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on May 21, 2009 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions
Dude...
Not biased, not baseless.
The reason it’s not baseless? Someone said Coach Mo was smug. He is not smug. I was giving an example of smugness. Krzyzewski is all the things you say AND all the things I say. His players have proven time and again to be dirty with intentional elbows and using their feet to stomp opposing players laid out on the court. These actions are accepted by him. Not baseless not bias. Just the truth.
I wasn’t upset. You are the one talking about “everybody just needs to chill,” and lynching players (which is a rather racist comment).
I’m not trying to change the subject to college basketball and rivalries inside that sport. You did that. I was talking about smug coaches. Quit bringing basketball into it.

Blog question: How do you get the link to read as a title rather than just the URL?
by Carolyn Christians on May 21, 2009 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions
when you type a post, where it hays the bold, italics, and strikethrough icons, the little chain link icon is something to click on to add a link.
(a href=“urlhere” )What you want the link to say(/a) will be the format, except <> instead of (). if i had typed it with <> it wouldve thought it was a link. hope that helps.

I dunno.
That pic above is hilarious. It looks like Mo is calling up his minions from hell.
the Snarl
It made me think of Staal’s locker room statement before heading to Pittsburgh Sunday that this time the Canes needed to come out in Game 1 with a “little more Snarl.” From him it sounded like a line in a Frosted Flakes commercial.
Our guys (thinking our current poster boys like Staal, Whitney, Jussi, Ward, LaRose, even smiley face Ruutu) are just too nice to make that statement seem threatening. If Gleason or Pitkanen had said it……..still a push.
At least that’s how it struck me.

you can make a small insignificant comment like where are all the “Mo must go” folks now, and it totally changes the topic of the discussion. It’s great.
hockeymom, thanks for the help about Mos joke about the turnovers, can’t believe I forgot the the details, guess it’s old age or something….(note I am not flirting with you :)
It was memorable to me because it was Mo’s introduction to the Boston press and so captured the right attitude after that Game 1 vs Boston (right on the tails of the Game 7 vs NJD). Lead with humility and respect is always the way to go.
And I so appreciate the “let’s just be friends” comment.;)

You must be kidding !
Chip Alexander may be a great guy, but he is mediocre as a hockey scribe. He is the master of stating the obvious, with little feel or passion for the sport. Chip writes what is essentially an UPI recap after every game.
Luke has covered hockey (and the Canes) for a long time. He clearly enjoys the sport
and has thoughtful insight to our team and larger NHL topics. It was one of the many N & O
mistakes made during the past 18 months to change his assignment. He is on a par with better known hockey writers such as Tim Pannacio (covers Philadelphia).
So, how’s everyone feeling for tonight?

A little frustrated that two of our most physical players have been taken out of the series for now.

Could we see another round of redemption
from Cole tonight. Thought last game was his best of the playoffs. He needs to create havoc on Staal’s line

I'd like to have Ruutu for his hits...
But Cole is pretty useless if he doesn’t have his speed. Lord knows his shot alone isn’t why he’s in the NHL

he might still be centering Jokinen and Samsonov

with Jokinen moving to wing, my guess is that Helminen will play because they will need someone to center the fourth line.

I just left the morning skate Cole looked fine he just has a bruised knee I got that info from Chuck Kaiton. WITH A BRAND NEW CANES T-SHIRT ON!!!! I will be order so much crap from the eye that Rutherford may personally sign my box.

I remember that vs. the Bruins
Some were even hoping that the ’Canes won 1 so they could finish us off in Boston before the home crowd
I see you beat me to it milady

because thats how Pittsburgh fans are. I dont think it is because they intend to be like that, its just that they love their teams that much and truly believe that they are the best in every sport (except baseball :))
by PittsburghCaniac on May 21, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, it was only last year when they won the Eastern Conference Finals…that probably has something to do with it.
yep. Some fans kinda realize with the salary cap, their time might be past (last year) but now see it as a second chance with an expensive loaded team.

I would suspect if Cole is at the skate, he should play tonight unless something weird happens this afternoon, like a soccer accident
GM of CanesCountry.com
Also think special teams will play a big part in this series. It wasn’t that big a deal vs. NJ and BOS b/c the Canes’ PP was struggling and the PK was so good … but we already saw in Game 1 that both can convert.

I am looking for
as many shorties vs any Pen’s PP provided by that waterbug himself, LaRose, Assisted by #8, Matt Cullen

Is this the Coca-cola 600 chat??
I think Jimmie Johnson has the best chance to win, but watch out for Dale Earnhardt Jr.!!
Still not a crook!
What’s a coca cola 600? is that like Pepsi Max?

It’s not hockey. I don’t see any relevance.

No relevance
It’s what we’re going to be watching after June 15th in any case.
Or so say some blogs I’ve seen.
Actually some wonder if we have two wide screens in our trailers, one on NASCAR and one on Hockey

not what I'll be watching...
i’ll watch paint dry first. i don’t think it’s a sport. i think it’s crazy the amount of money they spend on one race car. i think it’s only interesting when you’re in the pits connected to a team and you have a headset on as a spotter. i think i could get drunk enough to make anything fun so i’m sure i could go to the worst race and have a great time. just not gonna waste an afternoon watching it on tv. not gonna happen.
i don’t know what TrickyD26 is talking about. I was complimenting being there for a race.
Love, love, love the Canes!
Naw
It’s just the only racer name I remember. Are they called racers????
Satan is just a coping mechanism for monotheists.
I know this doesnt count, but it's cool anyway
He autographed the stick of one of my son’s team-mates at the Garner ice house Friday evening. His mom asked if he minded blessing it for him The boy got a few goals over the weekend too.

So sensitive!
I thought that was an intentional Tripp slam . ALong the lines of his typical:
If the Caps hadn’t scored that last goal to make it 3-2, it’s still be a tie game.

I am sure the mayor will plan it out- the man/kids name is RavenStahl…last year he claimed to have changed his name to steelerstahl during the AFC championship.

lucky them with three to choose from. Funny part is a bunch of these fans wear steeler jerseys instead of pens jerseys- it is the universal jersey of pittsburgh- look for it on tv tonight- you will get a kick out of it.

A lil off topic, but yesterday I emailed the canes folks and got on them for asking fans to stand during the game on the jumbo tron….hope others did the same
Yeah, I remember seeing that at game 6. The whole nobody sits tonight thing can’t be overplayed. It was a special special night at game 7 3 years ago. I was there. (tear)
I was in Iraq at the time but was watching live a 2am, my wife took a co-woker, and I still hate the co-woker :)

Cole with Brindy?????
While Canes coach Paul Maurice and the staff still are looking at line combinations, there’s a good chance Cole could be on Rod Brind’Amour’s line with Sergei Samsonov.
“He’s a big fast forward and we can really use him,” Walker said. “He looks like he’s skating as good as ever but there’s a difference between skating and getting hit and putting pressure on it.”

Predictions
Any more predictions from coach Lavi?? We need him to pick the Pens like he did NJ. Does he even still live around here>
not that I’ve heard … but I saw him over at Dunkin Donuts on Capital Blvd. this past weekend. Us Massachusetts boys love our DD.

I have all lot of respect for coach, we talked to him the night before he got fired as a matter of fact (skate with the Canes) and don’t think he deserved to get fired….but, he showed some sour grapes with that prediction, he would have been better off staying nuetral
It seems he has his
heart on his sleeve which I think was his undoing
