Hurricanes Newsstand — May 22

What's one way to silence Sidney Crosby? Let Evgeni Malkin dominate. And so it was in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals. "Geno" accounted for four points, including a hat trick, en route to a 7-4 Penguins win and a 2-0 series lead.

The good news? This is how it's supposed to go down. If the Hurricanes had won Game 2, everyone would be talking about them seizing control of the series and taking home ice advantage. Instead, Pittsburgh held serve and now the teams head back to the RBC Center, where Carolina will have the final change and the home crowd behind them.

As self-appointed "Little Miss Sunshine"

1 – at least we are not discussing blown calls and conspiracy theories. The reffing was almost invisible (meaning predictable and consistent so you don’t notice it), just like it’s supposed to be.
2 – tho we came out on the losing end, that kind of skill and fireworks (and it was a 1-goal game till Geno’s 3rd goal jawdropper), that game was probably the best thing hockey could put up to broaden our appeal and have newcomers understand why it is the best sport out there
3 – The Canes are not getting treated as wanna-be’s anymore – except by the most obnoxious of the Pens fans. And we’re back in the underdog role which has worked quite well for us in the past. (please refer to my avatar I added a couple days ago). Game 3 has the potential to be the season defining moment for Cam Ward. To those Caniacs who will be witness to it live at the RBC tomorrow night, you know your assignment. WOOOOOOOO!

1. agree, I don’t want to know who the refs are and thus far they have done that well
2. that is the type of game that can sell hockey to the casual fan
3. your dedication and never-say-die attitude is nothing short of sweet and i enjoy your passion for your club, but when do you accept the fact that the Canes are good and the Pens are great?

And if it becomes

the unthinkable and the Golden Child and the Pens move on, go Detroit/Hawks.

I would’ve pulled for the Devils. I might have pulled for the Bruins.

The Pens? Not in their current configuration. No way in hell for the Golden One to ever scribble its name on the Cup.

Okay – I admit I was stretching it. :)

But there are a lot of talented and future-hall-of-famer hockey players teeing it up on the golfcourse today, but none from Raleigh. (does A-Ward count?)

While I’m not satisfied with where we are this morning, we’ve come a long way since the beginning of 2009. Everyone was trying to figure out what was wrong with Pittsburgh in January. In contrast, we had been relegated to the trashheap. Staal, Ward and Mo&Staff had to earn the respect our team deserves, without the running head start from last June’s CupFinals (and 2 poster boy stars)

Never one to be discouraged, I thought of another positive result from last night:
4) We are not speculating on the significance of knee MRI’s, concussions, or even too worried about the consequences for Bayda.

Except for the $8.7mil pricetag he carries with him

The extension doesn’t kick in until next season…So the Pens league’s leading scorer at age 22 for about $3.8 million dollars. I’d take that any day of the week.

by Hooks Orpik on May 22, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Truthfully a bargain at any price – but too rich for our pockets.

by hockeymomof2 on May 22, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Carolina’s in really good shape, contract wise. The only players they have signed for longer than two seasons are Eric Staal and Tim Gleason.

And I think that’s the key in the salary cap world: short contracts, short commitments except to players you definitely know will produce.

by Iggy Reilly on May 22, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Puck Daddy suggested maybe the Pens fan store should start selling Malkin mamma&pappa Russian nesting dolls. They were about as sentimental as I’ve ever seen hockey coverage get. Talk about sweet! (in the worst possible sense of the word) It was like watching the dewey-eyed parents of a 15-yr-old tennis star. As a hockey mom, I can’t tell you how conflicted it made me. (or discombobulated). These guys are nothing like the Boston fans for sure.

by hockeymomof2 on May 22, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

…guerin’s kids with the “my dad rocks” sign?

by jeep99 on May 22, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree with their assertion that Bill Guerin rocks.

by Iggy Reilly on May 22, 2009 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

you’ve obviously never seen him play air guitar in the 14 different nhl jerseys he’s worn!

by jeep99 on May 22, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm no meanie

How can you not love those 4 cuties? Hockey for the populists, not the ugly niches. However, Guerin’s kind of a rental player isn’t he? it’d be more effective if Guerin was part of the core that got you there all season.

Again, I am so conflicted by this aspect of the Pens. It was so much easier to hate those Boston Fans. Pen fans are cloying, like a winnie-the-pooh birthday cake. I can’t resist the appeal but then I need to keep repeating “orpik, orpik, orpik” to get the taste out of my mouth.

The Canes are exactly the same way though (see my sentimental post about Nikki Wallin tying his sons skates in Garner last Friday). The Canes heart, skill and post-season comebacks have really caught the imagination of the previously unconverted locals. I think I’ve had to explain the concept the blue-line and offsides to about 5 people in the last week (many of whom are men finally willing to admit it seems to be a pretty awesome sport and are willing to ask for the instructions).

I’m also proud to say I whooped and hollered when Scotty Walker knocked Malkin off his skates last night (clean hit, no injury). Something for everyone.

by hockeymomof2 on May 22, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Geurin will get resigned, he is working out good, Hossa was a rent a player that we should have resigned but he was a choad and went with the wings, big mistake.

by JasonGoPens on May 22, 2009 12:17 PM EDT reply actions

there’s no money for Guerin. Also thinking Hossa is quite pleased with his choice right now.

by Cory Lavalette on May 22, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Will Pittsburgh have the money for anyone besides Malkin and Crosby?

by hockeymomof2 on May 22, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on May 22, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Half our team will be an UFA at the end of this year, but they are the expendables, the core of Malkin, Crosby, Orpik, Fleury, Gonchar, Staal, Kunitz, they are all signed for a nice bit of years. We’re used to a revolving door policy on the wingers, they can be replaced.

there’s no money for Guerin.

Disagree. The Penguins have about $46 million commited to 17 skaters. A lot of contracts (Satan, Fedotenko, Gill, Boucher) are coming off of the books.

If Guerin wants another $4.5 million contract he won’t be in Pittsburgh, but it seems like he really likes the team and playing with Crosby. We’ll see.

by Hooks Orpik on May 22, 2009 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

But they need two three forwards, and they need to be able to play at least in the top 9. Tough situation. Plus need a D or two and a backup.

by Cory Lavalette on May 22, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

The Pens might bring up some minor leaguers

Alex Goligoski is coming along nicely, and might see some major playing time on the Pen’s D next year. As for the wingers, if Guerin is willing to take a hometown/old man discount, then I’m willing to bet he’ll be around another year. The Pens could also call up Tangradi or maybe Luca Caputi from the baby Pens to play power wing. Just saying they got options…

go pens!

Sure, we can talk about how Eric Staal is a ghost in this series, as well as Cam Ward the supposed best goalie left in the playoffs. Or we can talk about how that minimum wage bum i can’t even remember his name just got a fine instead of the manditory 1 game suspension. We can talk about all those things amongst others if you want.

by JasonGoPens on May 23, 2009 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

The NHL has set a precedent for not suspending players this offseason

Just ask Adam Eaton, Jason Cooke, Alex Ovechkin, Scott Walker, etc.
As for Staal, you don’t have to score goals to be influential in a game, he had an assist and does a good job keeping the puck in the opposing team’s zone and away from their offense. Ward is still one of the best goalies in the league and was just let down over and over again by his defense. And I’d like to see any goaltender in the world try and stop Malkin’s no look backhand.

by pancanbra on May 23, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s also about 18 yrs old and thinks making rude and over-reaching statements on his team’s opponents blog makes us (his audience) perceive that he’s almost as talented and worthy as Malkin and Crosby. Shall we (said audience) take a vote?

Clearly he may be a “fan”, but he is not in the same league as the Pens. They’d be embarrassed by his silly crowing and Bylsma would tell him keep quiet.

Can we just agree to ignore him?

strictly College sports in my recollection. I can’t imagine what his motivation was (other than selfish)

The Canes are getting a lot of local talk this year it seems among new fans. He is just trying to ride the wave of popularity to relevancy. It isn’t going to work, the guy is an idiot.

Tarheel reporter with nothing else to do

Jason Jennings is a photographer/reporter for WRAL-TV. Jennings covers any one of a number of sports and teams, but this his concentration will be on the North Carolina Tar Heels.

he was always a jerk in the locker room, jerk to the media, jerk in a restaurant, etc…

by jeep99 on May 22, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, I've never heard of any goalie ever acting that way!

I’m shocked.

Look at Gerber. No wait.
Brodeur? Uh, no.

Cam Ward they say is really nice.

What’s the scoop on Fleury?

He was a jerk in Buffalo as well – he played there when I lived up there…

Tom Barrasshole!

I had the the strangest love/hate relationship with him as a kid. Remember when he got in a fist fight with a bunch of fans at a bar…or the time he got in a fight with his wife and she stabbed him with a knife and he missed a couple of months.

What a jerk, but then again, he did win us 2 cups, so…it makes Fluery’s quirks seem quite charming by comparison.

Do you guys ever watch the videos on WRAL.com? They’ve got 15 minutes of Mo talking with the press, following the morning skate, posted a few minutes ago. Since I don’t have press privileges myself, it’ the next best thing to being there. (Please Mo – show us the way!)

hey Bubba

Sorry to kill the buzz. Or maybe they’re all gonna move to blog on WRAL.(eek!)

Maybe I should start swearingmore? WTF?

by hockeymomof2 on May 22, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Can I get some information on what Mo is saying today?

I need to believe in someone. It may as well be him. I also need to believe my 200 dollar tickets for game 4 won’t be me paying to be depressed.

Can you open the video link at wralsportsfan.com? 15 minutes of Mo is like prozac for me.

Yeah, at home…the computer at work is too slow and has no speakers.

BTW

If we happen to win the games in Raleigh, someone please remind me to copy and post JasonGoPens comments to rub it in his face.

why humor him?

he’ll know better than anyone can tell him if it happens.

He’s already disclosed he works at Verizon on Weston Parkway, Cary. Perhaps you can drop by and leave him a “baggie” and a spoon.. (I’m kidding – don’t do this.)

I’m well aware that my comments are setting me up to get a ton of nasty things rubbed in my face…i’m ok with it, it will be much worse in person here at work, i’ve been a real jagoff here.
