Rutherford plans to sign LaRose and Cole by July 1

From WRAL this morning:

"The draft, of course, is very important to us in a couple of weeks but we would like to get some of these unrestricted guys signed in Cole, LaRose certainly prior to July 1," Rutherford told 99.9FM The Fan's Mike Maniscalco on Wednesday.  "If we don't then we run the risk of losing them."

Sounds like he's interested in keeping Cole around?

Interesting that he did not mention Seidenberg

or Ruutu

Hopefully, Tuomo’s agent isn’t making that harder than it needs to be.

I think he didn’t mention the RFA’s because they have restrictions regarding signing with other teams and are not as high a priority as the unrestricted, like Cole and LaRose.

Although Ruutu’s agent could still be playing hardball.

Thanks for pointing that out (the timing disitinction between the RFA and UFA). I was panicking. ;)

What about Bayda then? Are we all assuming he’s moving on?

no one will be jumping on Bayda at midnight, July 1. He’s the type of guy who has to wait to see where all the chips fall, then see what kind of offers he gets (Canes included).

while we're discussing UFAs

I saw yesterday that Pittsbrugh’s Rob Scuderi will be a UFA come July 1 and the ‘guins (bless their lopsided payroll) were paying him only $725,000 this past year. Any thoughts if we might pursue him? Maybe we’d keep Seids before adding Scuds, but still, I was intrigued by where this might go. (on an otherwise slow Caniac news day)

From what I read, Scuderi will be a hot commodity during the offseason and will be getting a healthy raise. I’m sure the Pens would like to keep him if possible, but they will probably be out-bid for his services. I doubt the Canes will enter a bidding war for anyone right now. They might try to add someone who is under the radar.

In the interview, Rutherford seemed perfectly happy with keeping the team intact from last year. (Perhaps adding a prospect or two or three). It doesn’t sound like they will look for a free agent at all unless they can not sign Cole and LaRose.

JR Audio Interview

http://www.wralsportsfan.com/hurricanes/audio/5323183/

For some reason this has been off the “beaten path” of the WRAL/99.9 website but it goes into a lot more detail about the coaching changes as well as UFAs and RFAs.

Seidenberg is specifically mentioned in this interview.

And Ruutu. :-)

I would really much rather have Ruttu and Jussi then, E. Cole. How good was Cole in the playoffs and how many goals did he score again ? Yet we are jumping on the wagon it sign him so quickly. LaRose I do not have a problem with b/c he has worked so hard and deserve a new deal, Cole hmmmm not so such an don’t let your fan/team loyalty stuff get in the way. Plus Ruttu is younger and less injury prone .

I agree up to the “ruutu is less injury prone” part. Ruu had his first decently healthy year in the NHL this year(and was still taken out of a few games in the playoffs). With the style of play that Cole and Ruutu have, they are more apt to get hurt. As long as they arent out for months at a time, its all good.

Getting Nervous !!!

Ruutu and Jussi are restricted, as this process keeps going on and on and especially know that the draft is over I just don’t see us resigning any of our guys meaning (Cole, LaRose, or Seidenbery) before July 1st an once they hit the open market you can forget about us an getting in a bidding war for any of these guys. Just something that our organization doesn’t do.

Seidenberg's definitely gone.

Rutherford has already admitted as much. But don’t lose all hope on the other two. They may find home is where the best offer (and the most appreciation) is.

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
