2001 and 2002

Really set this franchise back. Other than getting Wardo we really struck out with those picks. Good thing is that by getting Ward we are set in goal for next 10 years. Historically we have struggled with making first round picks that pan out. Starting with Staal we seem to be seeing a reversal of this trend. One interesting note…we have rarely been so bad that we pick in the top 5, all those years of being middle of the road hurt our chances to draft elite talent. See Pittsburgh and Chicago as examples of turning awful regular seasons into high draft picks and revamping their respective rosters. That’s why fans in all sports figure if you are not making the playoffs you may as well be the worst team in the league.

Great Info Bubba!

Since I’m a layman when it comes to the drafts, it just seems to me again that we really have not build on a team as a whole from past drafts. It seems to me we are fairing better with trades than we are drafts. It will be interesting to see your post about some other teams draft picks in comparison to ours that really made a difference to their team or even the NHL. The Draft really is a crap-shoot event, non the less exciting though.

Who we are choices that we could have picked instead of Staal at the draft in 2003? It would be interesting to see who we gave up and where they are now.

could have picked

Horton from Fla
Zerdev from Columbus/Rangers
Fluery went first to Pittsburg

We did pick well.

Well we definitely did have the better pick with Staal. Hopefully he will top all the past seasons to come for our team. Considering his going to make around 7 million dollars from our cap, we should expect no less from him.

This really shows how much of a crap shoot the NHL draft is.

Look at Detroit’s draft history. It’s not a crap shoot … it’s a lot of legwork. The Canes, simply put, were not up to snuff for a lot of the past decade. That seems to have turned around the past three drafts (specifically, it seems, the last two).

i dunno… Detroit also develops talent REALLY slow for the most part. Either that, or they just really do know more then just about EVERYONE else.

Detroit has the best scouts...

Overseas especially. They have always drafted Euro players well and spent money on a good scouting staff

Hakan Andersson, specifically. Put that’s the proof that it’s not a crap shoot, for me. The Wings have done OK in N.A., too, though … they drafted Matthias in the second a few years back (and dealt him to Florida)

How's your Finnish, Cory?

Maybe you’d be interested in that position. Wouldn’t that be a great job…?
(I bet Bubba would be happy to write a nice letter to JR on your behalf – as long as you keep blogging here. Everybody wins!)

Let's go Canes!

Ha … I don’t think my family wants to move to Finland. We left the Northeast for a reason … tho I’m sure the kids would love the more frequent snow.

this.

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
