Brent Sutter was named head coach of the Calgary Flames late Tuesday afternoon by brother Darryl. It's a full blown family affair in Calgary now as another brother, Duane is director of player personnel and yet another brother, Ron, is a scout. How long before they try to acquire Brent's son, Brandon from the Canes?

Brent just quit the NJ Devils a couple of weeks ago, citing family reasons, but Lou Lamoriello is not holding any grudges and gave permission for the hiring even though the ex-coach still had a year left on his contract..

Although there was a good bit of whining from Lamoriello about compensation...

Which, frankly, might be justified.

Lou had to give his permission for Calgary to even speak to Brent. He won’t be whining at all.

Actually, he already has been...

“You know once you give consent, because of the new rules in the NHL, there is no recourse and no compensation,” Lamoriello told the Newark Star Ledger on Tuesday. "I certainly believe there should be compensation in situations like this for all the obvious reasons, but there isn’t. That’s a league rule and you accept it.

I don’t think that’s whining … I think he did the right thing (let Brent talk to Darryl) but wishes he could get something for it, b/c he lost a very good coach in all this. He could’ve blocked the talks if he wanted to. He didn’t. For me, Lou did the right thing and should be praised for it. Brent maybe didn’t …

I don't disagree with you...

I just don’t think the compensation issue is something that needed to be discussed in public. As he admitted, he did something which hurt him and his club that he had a choice not to do, right move or not.

If Lou didn’t give him permission to talk to the Flames…. Would the Devils still be responsible for his contract? Or was that voided by the fact that Sutter resigned rather than being fired….

Either way… you could see that coming from miles away…. I think the GPS in my car even picked up on it…..

I don't think they would have had to pay him either way because he quit of his own volition...

But he also couldn’t have coached for anybody else without their permission because he was still their property.

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

yeah…. I was a little confused as to how that worked….

although it seems odd that they would be required to honor one term of his contract without having to honor the other…. eh???

I'm not sure what you mean.

They can’t have Brandon, I’ve been waiting for him, Boychuck, et al for too long. If JR does a good bit of FA signing along with these kids, we should have a good team right out of the gate. Not to mention the trade frenzy that’s about to go down. I’m hoping PK opens the purse a tad and they go about setting up a great roster. Time will tell.

Sounds to me like it could get ugly. Too much of a good thing. Family businesses at this level (money and power) sound like a trainwreck waiting to happen. But hopefully I’m wrong. That would not be good for hockey.

And I’m with Paladin: no way can they have Brandon. He’s all ours. Plus, at his age, I’d bet he’s happy to be a couple thousand miles away.

Let's go Canes!

He said he wanted to spend more time with family… I guess we now know how so.
