Canes Summer Fun Fest

http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NHLPage&id=33869

I'm sure Bubba will be posting a blog about this in the coming days, but I just wanted to blog about my experience last summer at the "Caniac Summer Fun Fest".  It's a promotion for season ticket sales to get the public out to the RBC like a Time-Share event-lol.  It's a great marketing idea and even better for Cane addicts to get some kind of hockey experience out of it even if you already have season seats.

My family and I  went last summer and had a fabulous. wonderful time.  Just being around Cane fans, going into the RBC (I already had my seats by then) and walking around, seeing the kids playing outside was pretty awesome.  Not to mention seeing Forslund, Barraso, Wesley, LaRose, Justin Williams talking on the stage and being silly---(oh no not Rosie) was cool.

We were not Cane fans in 2002 and had never seen them play during that Stanley Cup playoffs and championship series.  We have always heard about the veteran favorites of the fans like the BBC (BBC together)  , Francis, Irbe, Weeks, O'Neill, etc. and always wished we could have actually see them play together in a game.  Well to our surprise we were sitting on the lawn waiting for the game to start on the outdoor big screen assuming it was going to be a game in the 2006 SC series that would be played and low and behold it was the "Molson game" (I think that's what they called it) against Montreal in 2002 playoffs.  At first I was so disappointed because I was really expecting a game like game 7 against Buffalo in 2006, but then saw our line-up with our old veteran players and realized OMG I'm actually going to see these guys that I have heard so much about from that season play.  Irbe and Weeks even played in that game and Cole was a rookie.   I was a little weary not knowing anything about that game when at the beginning of the 3rd period we were losing 3-0 and thought "oh crap to be sure they haven't made a mistake and are playing a game that we lost".  I leaned over to a couple beside me and asked them if they were sure we actually won that game, they assured me to stay tuned because it was getting ready to get interesting.   Well, yes it did wathing that comeback and seeing Cole win the game in overtime.   I was as excited as if I was watching our Canes play in a out-of-town playoff game live.  I was in what we say in the south "Hog Heaven" (no pun intended Stormy).

It was a great game, a great night and a great event.  I hope everyone that has hockey withdrawl like I do can go this summer fest and do it all again.  They are going to play another "classic" game outside on the lawn and I wonder which "classic game"  this one will be and from what season.  Any predictions?

Thanks for the write up.

i’ve got July 24 marked on the calendar.

As for which game – we get to vote. There’s a poll on the front page (scroll down, right side) to choose. I went for NJ Game 7 (80 sec come-back)

Let's go Canes!

SB Nation Hockey Blogs gets proper recognition

Did you all catch this? Nice props from Puck Daddy Greg Wyshynski regarding the rise of SBNation hockey bloggers.

And I would vote Bubba and company at the top of the pile – based on what I’ve seen during the playoff run and the draft previews. Not only technically flawless, they also have great and insightful (not incite-ful) writing and excellent manners.

The Year in Hockey Blogs: Top 10 stories, trends and scandals [Puck Daddy]

The photo of Mike Commodore at the top in a compromising photograph is worth the click, as long as you’re not squeamish.

Go to #1 at the bottom of the list to see what Wysh says about the blogs.

…and well-earned. Keep up the good work. If we only had Canes Now and Hurricanes.com, this would be a very dull summer. (I shudder to think!)

This is not taking the place of the Carnival is it? It seems like they did this ladt year for the 1st time, and they still had the Carnival in mid September, right?

BTW, Bubba, not to bring “old board” stuff to the “new boards”, but are we going to try and do the live draft again this year. I was going to ask on the Forum, but it’s still down……:(

hey wilmnoca

Yes, we will do the live fantasy draft. (it’s up to c-leaguer and janey when and where). The old forum will be down awhile, I am doing a rebuild.

you are correct, the Canes will have the Carnival closer to when the season starts, it’s a different event than the fun festival.

Live Draft

Oh yes, there will be a live draft. I’ll have to see how many people I have coming back. Right now I know I have 6, with two maybes. Any of the regulars here looking to play? It’s a Roto league. I’d like to have 10 teams again as I thought it worked pretty well. Draft will be in Raleigh, possibly at the Caniac Carnival, but I’d rather wait and do it a little closer to the start of the season.

I'm assuming I'm one of the 6?

If we don’t do it on the Carnival, I can always phone it in. I was pretty quick the 1st year. Anyway, Count me in. But I am coming up for the carnival so, we will at minimum, have to get some grills going. Draft or no….

You are indeed one of the 6. Bug is a maybe as is another buddy of mine. Bug gets the invite since he won two seasons ago, but I haven’t heard too much from him lately, so who knows.

Didn’t that bastard get the 1st pick w/o even showing up?!?!?!?

Yes, he did. This year, if you don’t show up your first round pick is Jeff Finger

Pretty tame league

We’re a pretty tame league, so if you want to join you’re more than welcome. Lord knows we’ve had a few cellar dwellers so it can only be so bad.

I should mention it’s a roto league and not a head to head league. The goal is best season not best weekly head to head match up. I don’t know that it really matters, but I tend to do well in roto leagues and get creamed in head to head leagues, so it must matter somewhere I’m just not seeing.

What are the categories?

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

by MichaelProcton on Jun 30, 2009 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We grade on +/-; goals / assists; PIMs ; Faceoff ; PPG; Gams- winning Goals…..I think that’s it for forwards/D. Then goalies get the obvious stats w, GA, SV; and SO. It’s pretty intuitive once you get the lay of the land. Make sure you can commit 15 minutes a day or you will sink quick….

No, I'm a fantasy diehard.

Are PIMs good or bad? Also, is it faceoff %?

Haha.

I’ve played just about everything. Haven’t done hockey in a few because I don’t really keep up with the league enough outside of the ‘Canes, plus there aren’t the in-depth analytics like there are for the other sports. But I’ve got experience in such fantasy sports as NASCAR, PGA, and the Olympics.

PIMs are good. It is faceoff %. We use Yahoo, which is easy, but doesn’t allow for some interesting categories. For instance, I’d love a category that dealt with goals scored while a player was in the penalty box with the fewer goals scored the better.

We also do a short handed points category. I refuse to break that up in to SHG and SHA because there are simple too few. Aggregating the total is really the only way to get something that isn’t just sheer fluke (i.e. Kevyn Adams leading the league in SHG for a season).
