Canes Country Draft Party - Live Thread

Photo

Come join us for discussion as we watch the draft extravaganza unfold.  Will Garth Snow trade his number one pick to Toronto?  Will the Tampa Bay owners have a throw down at their table?  Will someone make Jim Rutherford an offer he can not refuse for Frank Kaberle?  The trades and trade rumors are just as exciting, (if not more so), as the draft itself.

Who will the Hurricanes end up selecting?  The first two people who guess correctly before 8 PM will win Canes Country t-shirts.  Good luck!

by Cory Lavalette on Jun 26, 2009 7:27 PM EDT reply actions

How could the Isles not have gotten a prospect out of Tampa so they could move up and take Hedman #1? Tavares and Duschene do nothing for Tampa.

ISS on Ashton:
A great skater who can drive the net. Has a good scoring touch and a good shot.
Scouting Report: A prototypical power forward who has the nose for the net and does
not shy away from the dirty work. Ashton has shown improvement the entire season, that is until the playoffs. It was very disappointing in the playoffs. At times plays the game to individualistic and causes turnovers in the neutral zone. He is a very strong skater that will go to the net hard. Is not scared to drop the gloves. Defensively he was at his worst in the playoffs than he was all season. He finished with 1 goal and 2 assists and a
disappointing -8. Night in and night out he is still an offensive threat and lead the Hurricanes in goals in the regular season. and even has good bloodlines as father, Brent played in the NHL.
NHL Potential: He has tremendous upside as a power forward.

ISS: Paradis has good size and is a strong skater who has improved his overall speed over the course of the year. He protects the puck well during offensive zone plays and cycles. Competes hard and battles for loose pucks along the wall. Plays a grinding style of game – finishes checks that are there to be made. Plays during even strength and PP situations. Was on the RZR risers list 12/22/08:

Philipe Paradis — Has a fine combination of size, agility, and terrifically soft, quick hands. Keeps getting better every time we see him.

From a CSS Scout

NHL Central Scouting’s Chris Bordeleau
"I think Philippe has more skills than his offensive record shows and a good upside. He’s a good skater, with good size at 6’2" and he can shoot the puck. He goes to the net well and has good ability to score."

The elite scorers in the Q put up a ton of points. Paradis had 50 in 66 games. This seems like you’re drafting a potential top six guy instead of a potential top three forward.

by Cory Lavalette on Jun 26, 2009 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

He's compared to Max Pacioretty by tsn...

Never heard of him myself, but he got up to the NHL this year after close to point/gm scoring in the AHL following a single year in college.

THN’s scouts view Paradis as a slightly less-talented version of Caron; a talented forward with good size and decent offense, but probably not enough for a top-six role in the NHL. On the other hand, Paradis does have a heavy shot; he won the hardest shot competition at the Top Prospects game. Shawinigan coach Eric Veilleux talked to NHL.com about one of the things Paradis brings to the table:

“He worked hard this summer strength-wise. He came to training camp and he started running people over like there’s no tomorrow. I honestly think that he’s one of the best hitters in this league right now. There wasn’t one particular hit that I remember, but he has four or five hits in every game that are big hits.”

“He’s been taught to put it together day-in and day-out. When you have skills sometimes you concentrate on just your skills, but now he is concentrating more on his hitting. Last year he concentrated more on his skills, but it is a matter of combining the two to make him a complete player. He’s much better this season because he is maturing and he’s obviously going to be a very good player.”

So they drafted a checking line forward over a guy like Carter or Ferraro who is more likely a top six guy?

by C-Leaguer on Jun 26, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

that sums it up pretty well

by jenniwa30 on Jun 26, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno .. Ferraro’s a bit on the safe side, too, IMO.

by Cory Lavalette on Jun 26, 2009 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he's one of those guys

whom a site like HF would rank as having top-six potential but not a particularly high likelihood of reaching it.

Say a 7 C or D, Cory?

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

by MichaelProcton on Jun 26, 2009 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

This is a very safe pick, IMO … maybe a better chance of making it than some others, but there’s not a lot of upside.

back 6 forward, checker, seems kinda like an energy guy from what ive read? im not sure, im still trying to get a feel on why they made this pick…

Yeah, but you don't replace an NHL guy with one in juniors.

His drafting will have nothing to do with Chad’s retention.

don’t mean to denigrate ruutu, have his jersey, but he’s more valued for his physicality than his scoring ability

he was considered the best player not playing in N.A. at one point. He is immensely talented … great shot, quick release.

54 points in 79 games with countless crowd-reving hits is awesome. hope they can keep him, would hate to have bought a jersey for nothing

from Alan Muir of SI..The Hurricanes pass a few players ranked more highly by other clubs to nab Philippe Paradis, a center from Shawinigan. He’s another safe pick who looks like a lock to become a long-term NHLer as a depth player with some offensive upside. Has NHL size (6-2, 195) and could make a relatively quick ascension to the pro ranks. The Hawks follow with Dylan Olsen. Solid value pick. Big hitter (6-2, 210) who also uses that bulk to launch bombs from the point. Odd fact: he grew up, and actually learned the game, in Italy. His father Darryl finished his pro career there after playing one game with the Calgary Flames back in 1991.
