The Carolina Hurricanes just announced the signing of Jussi Jokinen to a two year deal. Jokinen will be paid 1.5 million next year and 1.9 the following. More to come.

I call that the "Jussi Shuffle."
I just hope I get to see it again soon.
Love, love, love the Canes!
me too. And often.
I guess the Anthem at the RBC has been re-written for a couple more seasons. (Oh say can Jussi)

That's a heck of a deal, isn't it?
Quoting Bubba on Friday:
Ruutu had a career year and deserves a raise from his 2.25 million last year. Jokinen needs to be qualified above his 1.875 of last season. While these negotiations can wait because the players are restricted and are not going anywhere without Carolina approval, the Canes will eventually have to pay out in the neighborhood of 5 million to sign them both.
With those assumptions, that leaves $3.3 mil for Ruutu – which I think is way high (like by .5 mil?) – esp’y with the Finnish thing we got going.
How does this affect the LaRose and Cole discussions I wonder? (more money to spend, but also makes the point of what value these guys deserve if Jussi came in below $2mil).
Way Cool.

He took a cut in pay, which is a bit unusual without a fight. (arbitration for an RFA). Very reasonable deal in my opinion. Jussi proved his words that he likes it here and wanted to come back.
Do not know how this affects anyone else.

And given the apparent friendship with Ruutu (tho maybe Joni, moreso), hopefully the Happy Finn feeling will carry over to Ruuts too. (More sunny thinking from the H-Mom) Don’t suppose they have the same agent?
With the 2 Finns picked up over the weekend, I see a European trend here in Raleigh, which is more than a little out of character isn’t it?

Could it be a concession
…perhaps in exchange for the two year contract?

Exactly what I thought.

Do you think he was approached about with this salary, it seems less than what the trend looks like, so he could assist the team with more flexibility in what I would hope is a final offer to keep LaRose or possibly Cole?
Or he might have taken a lower offer than JR was willing to give to get a shorter deal and hit FA sooner.

awesome
finally some action and great news for a first re-sign.
glad hes signed...
BUT, this might indicate that JR has moved on from Larose and Cole. You would think that these final 2 days would be spent focusing on rosey and cole, but that doesnt seem like the case.
Hopefully it just means JR was trying to free up some salary for those two…guess we will see.
I wouldn't say that.
I would imagine he’s been working on all of these contracts from Day 1 of the offseason.

LOL
I swear this news on Jussi has made this group of Caniacs the happiest I’ve seen since Walker’s OT goal in Boston.

Well...
For a guy who could have tried to capitalize on a great postseason and sold his services to the highest bidder, he sure did take a reasonable (if not cheap) deal.

Love this deal.
Shows the remaining players that Jussi, although he was the hero of the playoffs for this team, is willing to stick around for a tad under what he was probably worth and give it a try again.
It also shows Cole and LaRose’s agents a little something about what JR is trying to do… if that be free up space for them to get paid closer to what they want, or show a comparative worth through Jussi.
And now for my personal favorite- It also shows Ruutu that he has another friend here that wants him to stick around and represent the Canes and Finland- and show the SouthEast how to throw the bodies around!! =) I will be devastated if Ruutu is not a Cane next season.
Of course all these points are very arguable and could be totally off base, but they are something to think about at least.

This is what sports is all about, doing what is best for the team both personal and money wise; THKS JUSSI YOUR THE MAN !!
Resign LaRose and Ruutu and let COLE- aka Mr. Goal_less in the playoffs walk.

Ok i spent 5 minutes making the worlds LLLLLLLLOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNGGGGGGEEEEEESSSSSSSSTTTTTTTT post....
talking about how im glad Jussi signed and I was surprised it was that low. I felt like what we WOULD resign him would be more than what we SHOULD have signed him. Its hard to put a number on him b/c of inconsistancy. So I was laying out the type of deal I would have givin him and it hit me….
HOW MUCH LESS COULD WE HAVE SIGNED HIM FOR? I dont think very much less. So I am happy with the deal and the term.
And it took me all that to figure out. Wow.
