Erik Cole stays with Carolina - Signs a Two Year Deal
The Carolina Hurricanes were finally able to re-sign one of their unrestricted free agents, even if things took longer than originally planned. Erik Cole signed a deal that will pay him $2.8 million in the first year and $3 million in the next. That is a substantial 25% decrease from his previous contract which paid him $4 million per year over three years.
Cole was traded last year at this time to Edmonton for defenseman Joni Pitkanen, but was re-acquired in early March in a complicated deal which sent Justin Williams to Los Angeles. After Cole was inserted into the Carolina lineup, he scored 15 points in 17 games and helped the Hurricanes to a 12-3-2 record in the final 17 games of the season, helping the team make it into the playoffs for the first time in three years.

Thats way to much money, we probably could’ve had someone alot better for that.
Just crazy to spend that on him.
It’s a fair deal…. Any Less would have been too much of a pay cut for him (imagine taking a $1,200,000 pay cut….)
I would have been upset if they went over $3M… but $2.8M and $3.0M are reasonable and give him a chance to prove he is worth it over the next two seasons…..

Too much of a pay cut? I could really care less. This is a business. If he doesnt create 2.8/3 mil value, he shouldnt be paid it. Would you hire someone for way too much just because they didnt want to take a pay cut?
He has not been the same player since his neck injury, and he was easily traded away to Edmonton without regard. And, he did absolutely nothing for them. Regardless of whether he was injured or not in the playoffs and regular season, as I have read from other posts, it doesnt matter- isnt that why we got rid of Justin Williams?
Nice sign…WAY TOO MUCH MONEY!!!

Look at the record with Cole then without him............
What planet are you people from? He makes Eric Staal a better more dominant player.
This planet, the one that has Cole putting up shitty numbers. The dudes a dud. maybe he picks it up and get’s recycled. I hope for the team he does. He ain’t one of the “two Pillars” anymore, more like a sandbag. though he’s still a player with exp. His salary is still too hiogh but closer. Look around just the SE. Booth just resigned, Ohland to Tampa, Knuble to the Craps. I don’t see keeping Cole at this price as any big help.
A
AAARRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
The guy was hurt all through the playoffs. He played hurt………….he isn’t going to advertize it but the team knew it…….. Eric Cole was a major reason the Canes made the playoffs. No Cole, no playoffs people. Look where the team was at the trade………..STUPID STUPID STUPID. Why does Rutherford like this guy so much? Because of what he brings to this team. SPEED, TOUGHNESS, FLAIR, BIG THREAT TO THE NET. JR knows what he means to THIS team. I am glad he is GM not you people.

This is the season that a player who suffered that injury gets back to where he was. Example: Gary Roberts….. Erik Cole will score 30 goals and have 40 assists this season. If that happens I want an apology from all you people. If not, I will buy you all a beer.

That is a whole nother ball game. Staalsy, although the face of the franchise, is getting paid a lot of money this year, and he needs to show up- regardless of who he is playing with. If Staalsy doesnt have 80 points this season, at that pay, he is a waste of cap space as well. (and I am a fan of him, but, dollars better turn into points)

Nope
From Canes now at 7:44
“Time to move on”
Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said Wednesday night that it now appears unlikely free agent forward Chad LaRose would be signed to a new contract.
Rutherford said he had been in discussions with LaRose’s agent, Patrick Morris of Newport Sports Management, throughout the day. There were hopes LaRose would accept a three-year contract being offered.
“It’s not going to happen,” Rutherford said Wednesday night. "I informed (Morris) that we had another deal we were working on, that I was giving him a courtesy call. He said he would run everything by Chad and call back in an hour. I waited but they never called back.
“Obviously they have a deal somewhere else. So we’re working on signing another free agent. It’s time to move on.”
Rutherford did not say which player the Canes might be talking to.
LaRose earned $875,000 last season, scoring a career-high 19 goals.
Let's go Canes!

I like Cole alright, but I think Rosey would be a little better fit. I think the Cole contract is a little high, but not far off of what I would expect. It came down to signing one over the other, and I just think I would rather have Rosey. But that’s why I sell telecomm and not running a team…..

Maybe he can. I think something can be said about players that have “break out” years right before being UFAs, only not to play as well in the future. I dont think we will now how good Rosie is for a few years, with or without us.
by PittsburghCaniac on Jul 2, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions
I bet Rosie gets a good offer elsewhere. Our org never gave him ANY respect. Last couple years he earned some. He’ll double his present salary. I’d of kept him over cole, but yea, Boychuck, Sutter, et al will fill any void left by Rosie leaving. I wish we had the money we wasted on Cole to offer to a qual;ity player, though, Cole at best is a serviceable guy and I still say if you have to carry him so Staal will play, trade them both.
A
Never ANY respect???
He wouldn’t be in the NHL without all the time, patience, loyalty, and respect afforded him by THIS organization. If the Cane’s can’t afford him, they can’t afford him. He must be getting better money somewhere.

I think that the Canes gave him a lot of respect, but if you have to carry Cole to have Staal play- I agree, trade them both. Regardless of what Cole is being paid, I am strongly concerned that Staal at 6 mil with a cap hit of over 8 mil is being overpayed as well. He better play at least 75% as well as Malkin or Crosby who are getting 8.7 mil each.

Not sure what you think you watched, may want to lay down the bong. Sutter was the only short handed threat in the begining of the year, he was on the PK for God’s sake, you can’t play like Cole (shitty) and get that.
Sutter could turn out to be a great player. He’s already very good. when his nuts drop he will be a name in the NHL Larose has probably peaked, that said, he’s a good player. He also benifited from playing with Cullen.
Don’t knock Sutter, he may replace Staal for alot less money and doesn’t need anybody to make him play better.
A
I'm not suggesting he'll never be a good player by any means.
But he’s got a lot of improvement to do if he’s going to contribute what Chad did last year in the coming season.

What will be ludacris is if Sutter isnt on the top 2 lines regularly in 2-3 yrs… something LaRose will never be.
He was completely over matched because he was a 18yr old 6’ tall 130lbs kid. Give the guy some time.
All I said was that Sutter has it in him to “have his combination of physicality AND occasional scoring ability” and that only time will tell.

I suppose we'll see
If Sutter matches LaRose’s contributions by NEXT SEASON, I’ll certainly eat my words…but he’s got a long way to go from the way he played last year. He was fine in his own end, sure, but even a fourth-line center needs to contribute more than 6 points in 50 games. That’s not even good for a defenseman.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Jul 2, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions
I believe most of those goals happened when he was moved up to the 3rd and 2nd lines filling in for Cullen.
Could be wrong… What was his TOI stat? At the time I dont think the 4th line was playing much… Lavi didnt care much for 4th liners.
by packpigskinfan25 on Jul 2, 2009 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions
Sutter saw 8:48 last season, Rosie saw 10:35 as a rookie. I will note, though, that Sutter saw close to 25% of his time on the PK, while Chad only got about 11 minutes there, and Chad saw 39 PP minutes to Brandon’s 5. Certainly helps to explain why Chad’s numbers were better, but Sutter’s got to produce more.

Terrific news. Cole is a top six forward and he plays well with Staal. For every whiner about this deal, there are ten ’Canes fans who think this is a great outcome, not to mention the coaching staff and players.
If Rosie takes another deal, he may live to regret it. See Aaron Ward, Matt Cullen , etc. I like Chad, and recognize what he brings to the team . BUT, the Canes run a good organization and have a team without cliques and drama. Let him spend a few seasons in Toronto, or Ottawa or New York with all the big egos and media scrutiny ….. I hope for his own sake Rosie makes the right decision .
I am one that doesnt think this is a great outcome, and given the posts, there are at least 9 others that agree with me. Please, show me the hundred canes fans that think this is great in order to equal that out.

A waste of cap space
The reason Cole signed that deal so fast is because when he “tested the market”, he found out that JR was offering him a lot more money than anybody else in the NHL was willing to give him.
No kidding, had we waited a month (since Cole “allegedly” loves Raleigh) who knows, maybe we could have signed him for the appropriate amount 2.25-2.5 mil per season.
by PittsburghCaniac on Jul 1, 2009 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions
I think the deal is too high, but I do think that Buffalo or Ottawa would have offered him close to the same, maybe even more. Eric probably decided to stick around after not getting the 3-3.5 he wanted from another team. The guy still could be a great player, and showed that during the end of the season… lets just hope he keeps it up and helps take this team to the PO’s. After that… he can be a healthy scratch in my eyes.
by packpigskinfan25 on Jul 2, 2009 12:01 AM EDT reply actions
that is true- who knows what other offers were out on the table. But it doesnt mean that we couldnt have let him go and found someone else with similar talent.

and Larose is gonna get PAID… and I say more power to him. Wish he was here, but our young guys should be able to fill that role. We NEED Ruutu.
by packpigskinfan25 on Jul 2, 2009 12:02 AM EDT reply actions
The funny part is, I kinda think we are all missing the boat on this whole conversation. From what it seems to me, maybe we are overpaying Cole .5-1 mil per year, depending on the viewpoint (and there are some great arguments here for both sides). Cole isn’t a bad player, and it seems that we are all trying to “play JR” in deciding if it was a good deal- but, this decision will likely not determine our season
Staalsy at his cap hit is taking a little less than 1/6 of our budget next year. Wont he be the factor that makes or breaks our team?
by PittsburghCaniac on Jul 2, 2009 12:45 AM EDT reply actions
I agree for the most part. I think Staal should be held accountable for what he makes, and what is expected of him- but I think the organization could do something a little better about having other options as bigger threats then what we have though. Gionta would have been kind of interesting… as would Heatley… but I understand the need to keep the locker room and the salary cap stable.
by packpigskinfan25 on Jul 2, 2009 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions
not saying I really wanted either of those players… but some kind of splash at some time would be nice. We have been lucky to be able to buy cheap refurbished players(Ruutu, Jussi, Sammi, Eaves(not so much luck with him yet)) and make them work, but could more be done? I am no GM… I just feel something more COULD be done. But hey… if we win like this- more power to us, right?
by packpigskinfan25 on Jul 2, 2009 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions
I can live with Cole’s contract. I was thinking it would fall somewhere between $2.5 and $3million. Sure it’s closer to 3 than 2.5, but its a few hundred thousand dollars that does not bust the budget.
Some of you may disagree and feel that he is not even worth $2.5 million, and more power to you.
I also like the fact that it’s only a 2 year deal. Now he can settle back in to “home”, be comfortable with his surroundings and prove whether or not he still has “it”. And if not, the team can move on without being hamstrung by a long term commitment.
In my opinion, Cole was everything we could have hoped for in those 17 games after the trade. And to be honest, I never expected it. 15 points and a 12-3-2 record for the team. The playoff push. Staal was revitalized. The forward lines shuffled nicely into place. His speed on the outside opened up the ice for Staal and others, and the added grit and willingness to throw himself around in the corners and in front of the net were a welcomed addition. Sure, the playoffs were a bit of a disaster. Disappointing to say the least. Playing with an injury or not. Strangely enough, looking at his career stats, Colesy has never really been a prime-time player in the post season. Let’s hope he gets the opportunity to rectify that over the next two years as well.
I hate to lose LaRose. And to be honest I would have slept better losing Cole. But I honestly believe that Chad (and/or, perhaps, his agent) might have intended all along to test the waters and were likely to move on to greener pastures from the start. I have nothing to base it on but my gut feeling, but I would not be surprised if there were some sore feeling lingering over the protracted negotiating process and arbitration from last year. The benching by Maurice when he first arrived. Those things can fester between management and a player. Just a hunch. Nothing more, nothing less. He probably CAN get more than the Canes are offering out on the open market – mind you I have no idea what the Canes are offering exactly, beyond the reported 3 years. We may never know exactly.
LaRose is loaded up with intangibles. Things that don’t necessarily show up on the stat sheet, and of course his stat sheet did not look all that bad this past season. But when you think about it, on a team like the Canes, under the self-imposed budget they work under, it might be a tad tougher to pay enough for those intangibles. Wish it were not so, but it probably is.
The Canes have to hope that someone else, whether it be a player already on the roster, one of the young kids, or a free agent from the pile is able to step in or step up and provide some of the grit, passion, desire, drive, two-way play and all around spunk that Chad provided. They will be tough shoes to fill. But I’ll throw a name out there for you…though some of you might get a good laugh out of it…Patty Eaves, this is your opportunity, it’s time to put up or shut up.
Best of luck to Chad wherever he ends up.
Good to have you back Colesy.
(man, that was a long post. sorry about that.)
-martin
The push had begun...
Before he got here.
In addition, Staal was playing with plenty of energy and finding success (13 points in 13 games in February before Cole arrived.)
If LaRose is leaving because he didn’t get PT when he first came up and he hadn’t done anything to deserve it, I’m glad he’s gone.
And yes, I suppose Eaves could conceivably match (or even better) LaRose’s impact, but unlike Chad, he’s unfortunately been trending the wrong way since he came in the league for that to happen.

LaRose LaGone LaGood Riddens
Rosie had a career year in a contract year — so what? So would’ve any third-liner in the same situation with a new coach coming in, etc. Rosie has always been a hustle guy but for every goal he nets he misses three.
Cole, on the other hand, is a big banger who connects with Staal and is a key to this team’s success this coming season. It’s essential we nabbed him.
Agree on Larose, your way off on Cole. Big banger? He can’t hit his way out of a batting cage, he’s slower than he was, injury prone and doesn’t handle the puck near as well as Cullen, Whitney, Sammi up front. If that what it takes to get Staal to play at his not quite at the top level he’s in effect getting over 10 mill to make under 80 pts. Staal needs to make 80 all by his onesy, Cole is an anchor.
A
LaRose
I have money on LaRose going to the rival Devils. There have been losing some key players (Madden, Gionta) and are patiently waiting for the dust to settle. Lou saw Rosie up close and personal this year and he would fit in with the hard-working players (i.e. Parise) on their squad.
Unless of course, he signs with a local B beer league team. He was actually out skating with a B-league team on Sunday in Garner. :-)
At any rate, he’s out of here and I wish him all the best. JR will likely sign a bargain FA like Pettinger or maybe bring Recchi back. After signing Ruutu and Babchuk there won’t be much left.

You are correct, and all of us appreciate this blog and the hard work that you and Cory invest to provide content worth reading. Many of the readers opinions are also worth reading . Having said that, there is a small group of regular contributors who seem to have their optic nerve wired through their anus, because they have a sh***y view of everything.
The usual suspects are flogged over and over: Staal, Cole, JR, former Coach Lavy, Rod B, Kaberle, Wallin, etc etc. It just gets a little old to read an endless stream of negative, one sided criticism.
During the past decade, the Canes have won a championship, played in two Cup finals and three conference finals. Few other teams can match that level of performance, regardless of market size. Better to appreciate and enjoy what their success has meant to the fans and this community .
I think the point was more...
That people can disagree without attacking each other personally.

I surely do not think there is one sided criticism here. People have posted multiple views. Negative or not, we are all critical of the product that the ’Canes offer, because we are the ones essentially paying for it through tickets, memorobilia, jerseys, stickers, concessions etc. etc.
People criticize players because they care, and ultimately would like to see the team compete at its top form. There is nothing wrong with that. Although I appreciate and enjoy the success of the organization, I would rather focus on the future of the team then re-watch past performances on you tube.
I think most of us are here because we enjoy arguing some of these points- its fun to talk about hockey, especially during the off season when there isnt a whole lot going on.

When it comes down to it...
I’d have rather had Samuelsson and a mil to play with over Cole.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
