LaRose and JR call it quits

Since Bubba is apparently in a super tiebreaker in the 3rd set, I'll get this out here.

Copying this directly from the man with JR's cell on speed dial, Chip Alexander of Canes Now at 7:43pm Wed:

Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said Wednesday night that it now appears unlikely free agent forward Chad LaRose would be signed to a new contract.

Rutherford said he had been in discussions with LaRose's agent, Patrick Morris of Newport Sports Management, throughout the day. There were hopes LaRose would accept a three-year contract being offered.

"It's not going to happen," Rutherford said Wednesday night. "I informed (Morris) that we had another deal we were working on, that I was giving him a courtesy call. He said he would run everything by Chad and call back in an hour. I waited but they never called back.

"Obviously they have a deal somewhere else. So we're working on signing another free agent. It's time to move on."

Rutherford did not say which player the Canes might be talking to.

LaRose earned $875,000 last season, scoring a career-high 19 goals.

So which "Free Agent" can this be? Again more drama. (Cason would probably have a great reference here to nail the mood)

I was in too big a hurry

That would be Mikael Samuelsson

I knew it wasn’t spelled right, but figured you knew who I meant. Forgive the lapse.

thanks mom!

sorry to apparently have larose move on, but he deserves more $$ than we were probably offering.

I hope the other contract they are working on (other than ruuts’) is for Scuderi. We need a big, “stay at home” guy. If we had wiffed on both cole and rosey, i would have hoped for samuelsson.

That captures the mood pretty well.

I’m thinking both Chad and JR have a nasty pit in their stomach tonight – then again they might be working thru some sweet deals and everyone ends up happy (optimist that I am). Just remember we do sometimes lose players (and coaches) only to have them boomarang their way back to the RBC. As JR says “The door’s always open.”

Thanks for posting HM. Maybe Chad doesn’t have Verizon and was in a dead zone?

No prob, Bob. Didn’t mean to steal your thunder, (but you did choose to play tennis over hanging by the newswire). And I was curious to see the results of this unsanctioned poll – before an announcement on the new contract was made. How’d ya vote?

Chad may just be ready to spread his wings and find out if it’s him or the Karmanos organization that deserves the glory. I wish him well. And seriously, I can see him making a return appearance in the sightless eye.

Weak move on his part, IMO.

Rutherford's "other" deal

I also would like to see something worked out w/ Larose, but if not there are 2 UFAs I hope Rutherfford could be referring to. My realistic player is Travis Moen & my wish player is Francois Beauchemin. Although the Canes getting up to “realistic” instead of bargain bin is pretty much a wish… always being on the “settling for” side of things gets me down.

I 2nd Moen. Plays like Larose except when he hits people, they fall down.

this may not be the end all be all, im look at the hard stance he took right before resigning cole.
needless to say, we dont know anything until its final.

I thought of that this morning as well. However – if we have some way of trading Babchuk to help out the D that might be an option?

How much money does JR have left if the budget is +/- $50mil?

I think I’ll just stay away from the NHL news for a few days and you all can fill me in next week. Is there a SB Wimbledon blog?

Sorry, I didn’t vote on the poll yet. Call me crazy, but I feel that Rutherford will change his mind tomorrow and the two will be back at the table. Still a 50/50 chance in my mind.

a replacement?

Scuderi and Samuelsson would be too much money now that Cole has returned. Recchi is a possibility.

Sunny, Moen is also a possibility, (good energy but no scoring). I think Beauchemin is waiting for more money. (5M plus a year)

budget space:

Answered my own question – since you’ve done so well to keep the Salary Chart on the left up to date, Bubba.

As of this morning, with Cole’s contract newly signed, we’re at $44.7. Add Babchuk at $1mil and estimate Ruutu at $2.5mil and we’re up to $48.2mil. If we trade Babchuk, and lose LaRose, we have about $3mil to stay on PK’s budget. Can we use the young folks to fill in for Chad – hardly a ‘replacement" but something new and fresh? Can we get a higher dollar experiened D for $3mil? (If Seids and Babs are gone, and Kabs here to stay, I’m thinking a top 4 guy to go with Corvo, Pits and my personal fave, Gleason)

I’m just trying to broaden our horizons to the possibilities.

Ugh… I was hoping Cole would leave and Rosie would stay. But I don’t rule the world, so…

Anyway, I hope JR is going after someone with a good work ethic and a strong power forward mentality. be it Samuelson or Moen, I just want him to get whatever our second best team in the four major sports needs to win.

Some Cheap Retread

With JR’s history, it wouldn’t surprise me if he suddenly signed Bates Battaglia or Pavel Brendl. There’s nothing JR likes more than bringing back a cheap retread.

I'm fully aware.

I was pointing out that we’re not limited to signing “cheap retreads” based on JR’s “history.”

From Tracking the Storm this morning:

The situation with Chad LaRose is much trickier. Despite discussions that started at the end of the season and continued all the way through the initial free agent period, talks have apparently remained at a standstill. The Canes claim they have other targets, and LaRose seems to have other suitors.

If that’s true and it’s not just a case of one side trying to bluff the other, I would expect the situation would be resolved rather quickly today. If they still can’t come to an agreement, both sides have other directions in which to turn. So what’s to stop them from doing so?

Hmm that blockquote is a little wonky. The whole thing is a quote from the linked post.

Chad signs with the Hurricanes

Hooray! Chad signed with the Canes today. Same terms as Jokinen from what I hear…
