Carolina Hurricanes Prospect Conditioning Camp Set For July 15-18
The Carolina Hurricanes announced the players, dates and times for their annual prospect conditioning camp, which will take place the second half of next week.
Philippe Paradis, Carolina's first-round pick in last month's entry draft, Zac Dalpe, a rising sophomore at Ohio State and a second-rounder in 2008, and two-time reigning OHL goaltender of the year Mike Murphy highlight the 10-player group.
The camp will run from Wednesday, July 15, through Saturday, July 18 with on-ice sessions at the RecZone beginning at 4:45 p.m., which will be open to the public. The sessions, according to the Hurricanes' release, will be led by Ron Francis, Kevin McCarthy, Tom Rowe and Tom Barrasso. The 10-player roster includes three 2009 draft picks: joining Paradis are second-round pick Brian Dumoulin (D, EJHL Junior Monarchs), and fifth-rounder Matt Kennedy (RW, Guelph Storm). Recently signed Matt Pistilli, an undrafted right wing out of Shawinigan (Paradis' QMJHL team), will also attend.
Free agents Kai Kantola (a Raleigh native who plays at Bowling Green University), Beau Schmitz (an undrafted defenseman with the Peter Karmanos-owned Plymouth Whalers), forward Scott Pitt (a rising junior at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa.), and forward Michael McKenzie (a rising senior and leading scorer at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.) round out the camp roster.
The camp is run by Hurricanes head athletic trainer/strength and conditioning coach Pete Friesen and will focus on physical training techniques and testing, motavational techniques, media training and proper eating habits, the release stated.
Bubba and I hope to attend a couple days each and speak to as many of the players as possible.
Here's a closer look at the roster.

It’s too bad the Finns can’t make it.
Keep in mind, the roster is subject to change.

What is the best hope for goalies Peters, and Murphy?
From what I’ve watched on youtube and read in online articles, Murphy is sensational. Is his best hope to be a back-up to Cam, or is it to become a great enough prospect to be traded to a team who needs him? How far away is he from playing for Albany?
Love, love, love the Canes!
Murphy could play in Albany this year … it depends on who wins the starting job there. If Peters is going to carry the load, Murphy might be better off playing a lot of game with the Everblades in the ECHL than sitting in Albany.
I can tell you Murphy looked great at last year’s cond. camp and, IMO, was the best goalie at the Red-White game last year. But a couple viewings doesn’t make him a sure-fire NHLer. No position is harder to evaluate young than goalies. A guy like Leighton can dominate in the AHL and be a fringe backup in the NHL. Barrasso has done such a great job with Cam. If he can do the same with MM he could be something special. The thing is, MM is a lot diff. from any traditional goalie. He’s fun to watch, like Hasek and Tim Thomas, but you always wonder if the speed of the NHL game will be too much for a non-traditional guy.
This year is big for Murphy … we’ll learn a lot, I think.

Thanks Cory
The youtubes of him are unreal. It’s hard to imagine someone unseating Cam but I guess it’s possible.
Love, love, love the Canes!
I can’t believe I’m going to admit this but here goes: I’m most excited about Mike McKenzie attending the camp, b/c that means maybe, just maybe… his dad will drop in!!! sigh I heart Bob McKenzie :-)

Am I reading this right that only one Dman will be there? (Dumoulin) This may be naive on my part, but it seems like they might want to scrimmage a bit – if only because that’s about as the funnest thing for hockey players at any camp. Passing drills can only go so far.
And – Yes – too bad that some of the new Finnish guys can’t make it.

Interesting...
Aren’t there usually more players from past years than this?

K...
Just seemed to me there were fewer kids who were actually a part of our system than in years past.

i’m looking forward to seeing Dumoulin in some sort of action. was very excited when the Canes drafted him and found he’s going to Boston University where they crank out great defenders like it’s nobody’s business.
I plan on going next Wednesday and would like to hang out and make new Caniac friends! haha
That picture up top of Paradis should have a caption that reads:
“I AM THE GREAT CORNHOLIO! I COME FROM LAKE TITICACA!”
One day I might actually act my age. Maybe.
Carolina On Ice: All Things Hockey in the Carolinas!
Barry Melrose Rocks: Hockey and mullets. What else is there?
Longer we wait kinda seems hopeless, he must not want to play for the canes as bad as everyone thought.
oh ye, of little faith!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned the last month: “Trust Rutherford”
Let's go Canes!

Actually, the I think the reverse is true
Folks smarter than me can correct me if I’m wrong, but by filing for arbitration Ruutu has committed to being a Hurricane next season. From this point forward I don’t believe he has any choice. He can either re-sign before the hearing, or he can accept the ruling from the arbitration hearing. The team, however, can reject the ruling after which he’d become a UFA.
Had he not filed for arbitration, he actually had more options to leave the team because there was the possibility another team could grab him with an offer sheet.

As I'm aware...
He still can be signed to an offer sheet before an arbitration ruling happens.

nope, we had this discussion a few days ago. Once a player files for arbitration they are off the market and can not be given an offer sheet. Look back in the comments under the article where he first announces his filing, the exact verbage is in there. someone was nice enough to look it up.

Interesting.
That seems kind of strange.

Open?
I read on the Canes announcement where media could sign up to come to the event, but I never got an answer if it was open to the public. Do you guys know anything?
The Rec Zone on-ice events are definitely open to the public. I think the media requests are for all the other activities associated with the conditioning camp.

Yep, I specifically asked Kyle Hanlin if fans were welcome. That’s why I included it.
