Dennis Seidenberg Coming Back To The Hurricanes?
Chip Alexander is reporting on the N&O's CanesNow blog that Dennis Seidenberg and his agent have come full circle and are talking with Carolina GM Jim Rutherford.
Could Rutherford go three for three with his big UFAs, all of whom tested the market?

I was thinking the same thing. Woild be pretty impresive and would make JR gm of the off season in my book. (Based on workin within the “budget”)

agreed: he hasn’t made any huge moves, but his resignings have been savvy and slick like sneaky-fast butler.
What exactly is:
slick like sneaky-fast butler
sounds interesting….?

Thank you. Again, alas, I have aged myself.

Who is about 25-30?
But then again, I didn’t get the cultural reference and I’m a “little” bit older.

JR also mentioned buying out Kaberles contract which would free up some more money (the team would pay 2/3 of the contract over the next two seasons)…
JR must be living right these days or something….

Is there an NHL trophy in Vegas we can nominate JR for? (or maybe they need a new one: “The Rutherford”)

This is true
Ruuts and the rest are not finalized yet.
But I’ve realized the last few weeks that it was silly to worry that JR is not working on my timetable, and patience is required to accomplish what he is trying to do. I have confidence in him. He does great things with about $6.68mil less than most of the other NHL GM’s.
Besides, I kind of like playing the role of CC’s Sunshine and Light.

He did say not to expect much even into August.

Question for you: How many of the final 8 teams in this year’s post-season were budget teams? I’m guessing only the Canes in the East, (BOS, WAS, PIT).
In the west it was: DET, ANA, CHI, CAL. Anaheim is budget – and was def’ly the dark horse.
Imagine if we had a couple Ruutus or another Staal, with $6.8 mil to spend.

League-average payroll was $49.4 mil...
In order, the CSF teams were:
WAS: $60.1 mil (2nd in the league)
CGY: $58.9 mil (3rd)
CHI: $57.9 mil (4th)
ANA: $57.5 mil (5th)
DET: $57.4 mil (7th)
BOS: $56.8 mil (10th)
PIT: $56.7 mil (11th)
CAR: $51.1 mil (22nd)
One of the big reasons we ranked so high in that ESPN ranking list was our “bang for the buck.” We win without spending tons of money, which in turn allows us to offer affordable ticket prices and whatnot.

I saw this coming.
When I first read that Seids was leaving, I was in disbelief. I was hoping that he would change his mind and come back to the ’Canes. After seeings the days go by and no one was really voicing interest in him, I guessed that it was only a matter of time before we saw something like this.
Personally, I think Seids is a solid defenseman. He blocks shots and can get physical. I remember two or three seasons ago when I was wondering if PL would scratch Kabs for once and put Seids in. That was when Seids was usually a healthy scratch. I always thought he was better than Kabs, but could never figure out why he wasn’t playing. He finally got a full spot last season.
Here’s more about the plan for a buy-out of Kaberle (which would cost $750k/yr for 2 yrs instead of $2.2mil for this year) and details on the available budget for 2 more D-men from Paul Branecky (Tracking the Storm)
nothing futher on Seids.

budget questions:
Quick budget math:
According to Canes salary chart Bubba has on the left rail, reducing Kaberle to 750k, gives us $5.3mil to come in right at $50mil.
That’s for Ruutu + 2 D-men.
$2.5 – 3 for Ruuts?
If we assume low ($2.5mil) then we have $2.8mil for 2 Dmen
Seids at $1.5mil???? as a top-4? (same as Chad or Jussi) Think he’s expecting to see more than $2mil?
Leaves $1.3mil for another Dman – possibly 3rd line? That seems like the older vets from last night’s post might just fit the bill – even if paired with Wallin…or a prospect from Albany (I like the sound of that).
How do the prospects from Albany fit into these budget calcs?
And I’ll bet PK might just go to $51mil if it comes down to it.

Most of the AHL-types...
Would come in around the minimum (less than $500K) if they made the big club.

I thought that teams had to buy out players before July 1st, but perhaps there is a loophole. Will look into that.

from what I can tell…
p282 of CBA
48 hours after Club’s last salary arbitration award or settlement:
Deadline for such Club’s Second Buy-Out Period [Only for Clubs with Salary Arbitration Cases]
phew! I was afraid it was too good to be true.

Interesting quote from article linked above
As the Hurricanes aim to set next year’s budget at around $50 million dollars (purely in cash, not in terms of their cap hit, which would be about three million higher), the extra money would help quite a bit if it came to bringing in a free agent or adding some salary in a trade.
Cap hit of around $53 million is encouraging, especially with Staal’s big cap hit next year!
So, that does amount to about $51 million, good job Hockeymomof2!
Aah, the joys of fuzzy math

Say what?
They’ll be spending $50 mil. The hit is higher because some contracts (Staal’s particularly) are backloaded and the hit is the average of the whole deal.

It is my opinion that if they buy-out Kaberle
JR intends to spend a little more money in order to revamp the the blue-line. If Kaberle’s buyout is 750k and the remainder of Hamilton’s buyout is 250k….that totals one million, which I think will be discounted from the actual budget but obviously not the cap. Like I said fuzzy math. This am on 850 the Buzz JR hinted that they may be willing to expand the budget, but this depends on what it takes to lock up Ruutu
