Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

The door seems to have officially shut on Dennis Seidenberg — and perhaps Anton Babchuk — today with the signing of veteran defenseman Andrew Alberts to a two-year, $2.1 million contract. He will earn $800,000 next season and $1.3 million in 2010-11.

Here's the official release:
HURRICANES AGREE TO TERMS WITH ANDREW ALBERTS
6’5’’ defenseman led Philadelphia Flyers in hits, ranked third in blocked shots in 2008-09

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Andrew Alberts on a two-year contract. The deal will pay Alberts $800,000 in 2009-10 and $1.3 million in 2010-11.

"Andrew is a big, physical defenseman who should be just coming into his prime at the NHL level," said Rutherford. "He had a good year for the Flyers after suffering an injury the previous season, and should help solidify our blueline with his defensive presence."

Alberts, 28, earned career highs in games played (79), goals (1), assists (12), points (13) and plus/minus (+6) in 2008-09 after being acquired by the Philadelphia Flyers in a trade on Oct. 13. The Minneapolis, MN, native led all Flyers skaters in hits (157) and ranked third on the team in blocked shots (133). He ranked third among Flyers defensemen in total shorthanded time on ice, and fourth among Philadelphia blueliners in plus/minus (+6). Alberts (6’5", 218 lbs.) skated in all six Flyers playoff games, earning one assist and totaling 10 penalty minutes during the team’s six-game series against Pittsburgh.

Originally drafted by the Boston Bruins in the sixth round, 179th overall, of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Alberts has totaled two goals, 30 assists (32 points) and 292 penalty minutes in 263 career NHL games with the Bruins and Flyers. Prior to turning professional, he played four seasons at Boston College, where he was a two-time NCAA East First-Team All-American. His complete career statistics are listed below.

So does this mean that they are 100% for sure going to buy out Kaberle?

I hope neither of them remember this:

Haha, Alberts has fought Scottie Walker too. Nonetheless, I’m incredibly pleased with JR’s moves this offseason.

I just wish Babchuk would man up and take the money, I’m one of the only two people I’ve seen at RBC with his jersey, and sadly I’ll have to hang it up :(
What a waste…

too funny! I like the end comment : “Two-point take down for Alberts!”

Unfortunately, though...

Alberts, like Koustoupolis, ain’t very good at the pugilistics. In like 30 NHL fights combined, they’ve got like 1 hockeyfights.com voted victory.

I just listened to a rather pathetic interview of Alberts on 850. The guys just wanted to talk to him about playing on a team with guys he’s scrapped with. Poor Andy – hopefully he’ll meet some Raleigh press who want to ask him about playing hockey. I was kind of embarrassed if this conversation was his intro to the Canes market.

However, the radio folks got on youtube as they were talking to Andy, and found the Alberts vs Kosto fight that was posted here yesterday (way to research your topic, you so-called sports journalists). They announced that in Alberts vs Kosto, it was voted a draw; and Alberts and Walker have fought twice and split, according to hockeyfights.com. Radio journalism at its finest.

I wish Bubba got a chance to handle these things. Maybe Canes PR can arrange some sort of interview he can post for the apparently more knowledgeable hockey fans than those listening to 850 on the morning drive.

well maybe Scotty can give them some pugilistic pointers and bring them up to top-line standards in the next few years. Our home-grown Prongers? (and then there’s our draftee from Guelph, Kennedy to take the reins in another few years)

I’m wondering what Coach Mo, Staal, Whitney, etc are thinking with all this “grit” arriving to support them this fall. I imagine them up in Ontarios’s Lake country, watching the sunset from the cottage porch, and giggling uncontrollably into their beers.

Makes those first 2 games against PHI and BOS even more interesting.

Here’s what that “Best of the Rest” remaining D-men UFAs (from NHL.com) said on him over the weekend (FWIW – they had him 7th of 10, 2 notches above Seidenburg):

Andrew Alberts Philadelphia 1-12-13 in 79 GP
28-year-old is a solid third-pair defenseman who’s likely going to be looking for a new home following the Chris Pronger deal.

Do you think we’re still looking for another guy to be top-4? Is this is a 3rd liner, at $800k.?

by Carolyn Christians on Jul 15, 2009 5:13 PM EDT reply actions

I think JR is relying on Alberts to mature into a top 4 guy, but it might be a year. He’s jumping from 800k to what, 1.3 million next year? I hope with that much paper going his way he’ll be a solid top 4 D-man

by hurricanes13 on Jul 15, 2009 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Sounds like the plan. I noticed the big $ jump next year too (>62% raise). Maybe Seids will sign a 1-yr and take the #4 spot, plus Corvo will be a UFA in 2010 so we need to be developing veteran D for the long-term.

Let's go Canes!
Hakkaa Paalle!

by Carolyn Christians on Jul 15, 2009 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the raise is more about making budget this year and then getting some cap relief next year in case the cap falls down to the 50 million dollar level next year. The better way to look at this deal is 2 years @ 1 million per, with some accounting maneuvers thrown in to make it work.

by C-Leaguer on Jul 15, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

that makes a lot of sense. IS there really a chance the cap would go to $50mil? That’s going to be a tough pill to swallow for half the teams (and all those hotshot players with $7mil+/yr contracts out there).

Maybe some of you CBA gurus can write up an “Idiot’s Guide to the CBA” as a fanpost to explain how all this works. Seems like some major changes are in store in the NHL business offices.

Let's go Canes!
Hakkaa Paalle!

by Carolyn Christians on Jul 15, 2009 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

The CBA ties revenues to salaries. No one is quite sure how much revenue will decrease this season because of the economy. I’ve seen guesses, they’re not really estimates at this point, as low as 50 million. The most likely scenario is that it comes in a little lower than this season, say 54 million, but again, who knows.

by C-Leaguer on Jul 15, 2009 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Smart business for the owners. Are there any other pro sports leagues that use this tough a sal cap formula?

Let's go Canes!
Hakkaa Paalle!

by Carolyn Christians on Jul 15, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

No. Basketball’s cap is very soft and you can always go over to re-sign your own players. Football has a hard cap, but it’s not as much of the revenue as in Hockey, which is one of the reasons the football players want to re-open the CBA.

Alberts seems like a solid dman in his own end and jr seems to have luck with the buy low and sell high tactics (meaning getting players that are comming into their own).

Thanks JR & the NHL!

For making the emptiest day of the year in sports actually quite eventful!

I like, really like these two signings. A bit anxious about the ufa’s and rfa’s this may affect, but this certainly seems to fill the glaring need that was exposed in the BOS series.

Anyway to keep Ruu and Seids where the cap is now?

by BenLo on Jul 15, 2009 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

Even with a kaberle buy-out PK will have to allow JR to spend an extra 2-3 million to sign rutuu and sieds. I think we are close to 48 million right now(correct me if I’m wrong). I see rutuu at 3 mill and that doesn’t even leave anything for sieds

The extra few million will more than likely be the difference in the club making a profit or losing money. It takes consistant trips to the post season for clubs to make money (most of them at least) and we need to build on the cup runs theses last four years.

by CarolinaCanes on Jul 15, 2009 5:47 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

You’re about right – I see the total after this contract at $47.7mil using Bubba’s Salary chart (which even includes Konstopoulos – he’s on top of this! – the Canes depth chart hasn’t put him in yet).

If we do buyout Kaberle – that’s a net savings of $1.5mil

So we’re back to $46.2mil.

That’s $3.8 for Ruuts and another top 4 D. I think we’d need closer to $5mil ($2.8mil for Ruutu and $2.2mil for a strong D-man at a minimum?) to make that happen

And that’s also including young Sutter at $875,000 – and I’m still confused on whether he counts if he’s in Albany a lot.

If we trade Eaves at $1.4mil for the Dman, that would do it….(the dif between $3.8 and $5mil above.)

by Carolyn Christians on Jul 15, 2009 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Sutter's on a two way deal.

I believe all of his signing bonus should have been paid up front. As such, he’ll get the prorated portions of $787K for NHL work or $65K for AHL work. That works out to $9598/NHL game and $813/AHL game. So, for example, if he spends half the season in each level, he gets about $426K.

You think? If anything I’d think this means that it is more likely that Seidenburg comes in as the remaining top 4 d-man to pair with Pitkanen. With Wallin and Alberts as the third pair and Corvo and Gleason as the top pair Seidenburg pairs well with Joni on the second pair, fills the role the Canes need and does so likely within budget.

Do you by any chance mean this signals the end for Kaberle?

by C-Leaguer on Jul 15, 2009 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I read it that they have to get top-4 D via trade (Eaves). They can’t go for a UFA, including Seids.

wallin IMHO is nothing more than an over priced 7th dman. He has been so since the 2002 cup run. Now he is just older, slower and less reliable. He did play well in some games durring the push and playoffs, but not nearly every night. just my opinion

by CarolinaCanes on Jul 15, 2009 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

This is it for the D, IMO, unless they move a D (other than Babchuk) out in a trade (Corvo?). Right now there’s Gleason, Corvo, Pitkanen, Wallin, Alberts, Kaberle, Babchuk. Even if Babs isn’t back and Kaberle is bought out, you still have Rodney (who JR said last year would have to play himself out of a job in the NHL), plus Harrison, Carson, Borer and McBain (tho he should spend the year in the A). On top of that you have Conboy in the pressbox as a reserve if needed.

Unless a big trade goes down, this is it. Kosotopolous will take Conboy’s slot and Sutter will be in the A with Boychuk and Bowman. Sure, Eaves could be moved (mid-level pick) and one of those guys could slide up. But I think this’ll be the team for now. Now more UFAs, IMO.

by Cory Lavalette on Jul 15, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Another blueliner likely, according to Paul B at TTS

This was at 5pm, after the Alberts signing

The signing crosses another to-do item off the Hurricanes’ summer list, with restricted free agent Tuomo Ruutu yet to be resigned and another defenseman still likely to arrive before the season starts. That defenseman could still be Dennis Seidenberg, who remains on the market as an unrestricted free agent and has resumed negotiations with the team.
However, that need could still be met via trade. Rutherford acknowledged that the addition of Kostopoulos gives the team enough depth to consider moving a forward for a defenseman if the need should arise.

I don’t know how clued in he is to JR’s brain, but considering he’s the blogger on the Canes site, I’d like to think we’re in for another guy.

by Carolyn Christians on Jul 15, 2009 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with all of this statement. JR did say that about Rodney, and I also like the idea of all the guys playing together in the A. These guys all seem to have come in around the same time, they’ve all been developing in dif places. Sutter playing i forget where, McBain in college, Im not sure where all the young forwards played, but Boychuk was in Lethbridge, Sutter was in Red Deer, Bowman was in Spokane, etc, etc, etc. It’ll be detrimental for all these guys to get to know each other, and develop that bond as teamates and as friends. It bodes well for the “chemistry” thats all too important. Im really liking where all this is going! Its good to be a canes fan these days!

another Defenseman still in the works, says JR

Here’s Javier Serna Canes Now quoting JR, posted when (after) they announced the signing of Alberts:

Rutherford said the signing doesn’t rule out re-signing defenseman Dennis Seidenberg.
“We’re still working on adding one more defenseman,” he said.
That, Rutherford added, would allow the team to buy out the final year of defenseman Frank Kaberle’s contract at about two-thirds of the $2.2 million he would have otherwise made this year and spread the payments over the next two seasons.
Defenseman Anton Babchuk, Rutherford said, does appear to be out. Babchuk, with no arbitration rights, wants more than the $1 million he’s been offered, and has threatened to play in Russia next season.
“I don’t believe so,” Rutherford said of Babchuk still being an option. “Based on conversations with his agent, his position hasn’t changed and ours’ hasn’t changed.”

Sorry if that’s not good news for all our great D prospects in Albany……

is it still out of the question to deal Kaberle to a team looking to land Tomas?? I think that idea is dead but the leafs have alot of depth on the back end and to be honest Tomas doesnt seem to fit the type of player burke is looking for (btw i think he is doing and excelent job up there)

Any word on Wallin??? He has a not trade clause but anyway we can buy him out? I dont think he is in our plans. If we could clear him/kaberle and maybe trade eaves ( i think he has more value to us than his trade value would indicate) we could sign rutuu and probably make a case for a top 4 dman (which imo would give us a stellar D.

What I like most about this deal

The Canes were going to be hard pressed to sign a top 4 physical defensemen and stay under their budget. Instead of doing that they went out and got Kostopoulus at a very reasonable price to bring some physicality and then compliment that with Alberts at a reasonable price. This team has gotten a lot more physical, can still get in under 50 million by signing Ruutu and Siedenberg, and still maintain a solid team.

Again, I’d like to ask if I can change my answer to what I would do if I was GM for a day to “not get in the way of JR.”

by C-Leaguer on Jul 15, 2009 6:13 PM EDT reply actions

C-Leaguer as GM for a day?

If you were GM for a day, you could spend the day at the RBC press cafe and enjoy the barbecue sandwiches that they serve. I heard Dan Bylsma couldn’t get enough of them. That way you wouldn’t be anywhere near JR’s phone or email and mess up the machinery he’s got going. And, personally, I wouldn’t have to worry about you trading Ruutu because you were sure there was an upside to that trade.

Seidenberg, Frank, good moves JR.

Alberts is going to be a top #4 blueliner this season; as for Tom Kostopoulos he is going to be on our fourth line an be what Brookbank used to be but the difference is that he can skate an score alittle more IMAO (sorry I figured I would just throw that in their). Either way we should have a good mix of speed an toughness this year which is what we have needed since we won the cup in 06’. Sorry Frank & Denis but you are done, I really don’t see us making anymore moves except getting Ruutu to agree on the multi-year deal and not let him go to salary arb. GOOD MOVES JR.

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Jul 15, 2009 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

No way Alberts is a top 4 guy. He’s solid, but he’s not top 4 material, especially if Frank Kaberle or Anton Babchuk are part of your third pair. Dennis is marginal top 4, but with the rest of the D corps in Carolina he can pull it off. He can skate the minutes and be solid. Kaberle is going to get bought out. Dennis will then get signed and pair with Joni unless JR can find a better value.

BTW, for comparison’s sake, his 157 hits would’ve been good for 4th on the canes, behind Ruutu, Cole, and Gleason.

His 133 Blocked Shots would’ve put him in a tie for 2nd on the Canes with Gleason, behind Seids.

niiice! The ball keeps on rolling! This place has been busy the past few days!

I see us trying for a top 4 D man, but if we dont get one, I think Alberts is a guy that could move into that roll without too much trouble.

If we can dump Kabs, Patty and/or Wallin- We should be able to try for a D man and give Ruu a decent raise that he will be ok with.

I DONT CARE IF ITS ONLY FOR ONE YEAR- SIGN RUUTU ALREADY!!!!

of course I would be much happier if it was for 2+ years! =)

Ruutu

We need to keep big R. He was the heart and soul of our team last season. If you want to get rid of someone why not R. B. he runs around like a chicken with his head cut off most of the time, plus he is getting up there in age you know. It doesn’t matter that he is the captain of the team. Maybe the organization could offer him a coaching position somewhere. Eric Cole and Eric Stall need to show more than they did last season. New Jersey and Boston were long series, However to get swept by the Penn’s should have been totally unexceptable.
Maybe better things are ahead for us next season.
