Carolina Signs Chad LaRose for Two Years - Rioting in Streets Ensues
The Carolina Hurricanes have just announced the re-signing of free agent Chad LaRose to a two year contract. LaRose will earn 1.5 million in 2009-10 and 1.9 million in 2010-2011. Apparently, the winger was finally able to get through on the phone to GM Jim Rutherford, who was a bit put off last night because he claimed LaRose never returned his call. All's well that ends well though for the general manager, who ended up accomplishing what he wanted to, the re-assembling of the core of last year's squad.
This contract might put an abrupt end to the Hurricanes free agent spending, even though they could still use a big, strong, physical defenseman. More about that in the coming days. In the meantime, Caniacs can rejoice and enjoy the holiday weekend.

I was speaking w/ my (boss) friend earlier…. we decided that if the two of them (LaRose and JR) were playing chicken that JR would win hands down….
He always wins these games….

I replayed today’s 3:30pm interview with JR on wral.com, that I also heard live (prior to signing Rosey). Hearing it the second time, knowing what he wanted to accomplish, I’m ashamed I ever doubted his status as a GM-Rockstar. What a heads-up player!
Do you think there ever was a Free Agent forward with whom he broke off negotiations last night? Was Chip Alexander part of the plan – unwittingly or not? Puck Daddy had the Canes close to signing a 3rd linefUFA forward at noon. I sure fell for it (no shame there).

I bought a Cullen jersey the year we won the Cup, and that summer he was off to NYC. Gleason came over in the Jack Johnson deal, and picked up #8. Early in the season I was standing in line for the Men’s room between periods (wearing my jersey of course) and the guy behind me tapped me on the shoulder and asked, seriously, who “Cullen” was. He was wearing a Brind A’mour jersey. It was all I could do not to ask:
“How’s the bandwagon going for you?” ;-)

OH YEA BABY!
WOOOO HOOOO.
Now I can get LaRose’s name on my ‘third black jersey’. It was going to be Rosie or Rutuu, of course Rosie is my 1st choice.
I’m having a senior moment, can someone enlighten me on the rules for signing Restricted Free Agents and how that works as with Rutuu?

RFA rules:
You have the opportunity to offer a one-year tender to any RFAs. It must be a certain pay raise over their previous year’s salary (110%, I think?) If you do so, you maintain that player’s rights, although you do not have exclusivity in negotiating with them. If you work out a long-term deal with the player, they can be signed at any time. If they are made an offer they like by another team, they can sign to what is called an offer sheet. This offer sheet must be submitted to the original club and that club is given seven days to match the offer. If they choose to do so, the player is theirs under the terms of the offer sheet. If they decline, the new team gets to keep their player under the offer sheet terms, but they also owe the original team compensation in the form of draft picks. The amount of compensation is awarded based on a sliding scale based upon the average salary of the offer sheet. For Ruutu, he would bring a minimum of a 2nd-round pick, but if the offer were to surpass about $2.6 mil, it would be a 1st and a 3rd. If the offer somehow averaged about $3.9 or over, we’d be owed a 1, 2, and 3. There are a couple far more rare options, but: if the player doesn’t receive a long-term offer they like from any team, and they can sign their one-year tender with the intention of hitting unrestricted free agency the next year. This doesn’t happen often, but even more rarely, the player can choose to refuse to play for their original team at all (as Anton Babchuck apparently intends to do.) In that case, though, that players rights are held indefinitely by their original team.
Sorry that this is a wall of text, but I don’t see a very good way to break it up.

Like the deal
If we overpay for his peak (apparently a big if, even though I’m still hesitant), it’s not by much and not for long. If he really is getting better, great.
Still would have liked a more dominating wing for Staal’s line, but I’ll take this.
yeah…. but now what are we all going to talk about over the summer….????

Well, this makes everything better. We got Cole and Rosie back. So now all we need to do is move kaberle or wallin and get that D man JR wants (just no melicar this time ok?).
Now what about Ruu? Any word on him yet?

You can hear from JR himself on the link that I put below (right after the Chad-fest) when he was interviewed about 3:30 this afternoon.
Basically – he doesn’t expect any problems with Ruuts. It’s pretty straightforward.
He all but said Babchuk is gone and he needs to focus on getting another top 4 D-man.

check out the replay of Chad on the radio at 6:45
about 10 minutes of giddiness – scroll down to the audio portion of 99.9 sportsfan site. He is even more ecstatic than we are. (and so are the guys interviewing him)

thanks for the link, hockeymom, Chad does seem genuinely happy to be back. Great to hear him talking about 30 goals and working out with Brind’Amour. Staal needs a winger that’s good for 60-70 points; maybe Chad can fill that role if he continues to progress like he did at the end of last year. Staal centering Ruutu and LaRose? There’s a lot of grit/speed/savvy there.
on another note, does anyone think the Canes might break the budget for a $3-4 mill a year defenseman with size and stay-at-home skills to kind of round out this team as a Cup contender? I’m pretty sure it’s wishful thinking, but does anyone know of any candidates that might fill that role?
And, since we’re chewing the fat, Commodore make just over $3.6 million. Could he be another prodigal son?
Commodore – now that would be a brilliant marketing strategy! Depends how desperately he needs to feel respected. Seems like we do best with those who come here with serious self-doubts and experience the Caniac Love. (after all we deserve all the credit, don’t we? Where else have they begun the Anthem: Oh say can Jussi?)

Thanks hockeymomof2 for the good listen. It’s great to hear Rosie and Mike’s voices again from 99.9 The Fan.
I thought it was funny how many times Rosie made reference to his “fiance Christina”, I know in the show “Day In The Life” she was his girlfriend. It sounds like he’s happy about two things going on in his life now. I hope they get married soon and they bring a little Rosie into the Caniac world. Congrats to Rosie for the contract and his engagement.
SWEEEEETTTT!!!!!
=)
Now on to RUUUUUUTUU!!! The most important of them all.
I dont have time right now to listen to the interviews, but I like what I hear. It would be nice to have Babs back, but if we can dump his salary and/or Kab and Wallin’s, then we have some $ to get another D man. I like Wallin though, and wouldnt mind him sticking around. He just seems like the stand up guy that no one understands. His play isnt horrible, he just gets paid more then he is worth.

On Wallin...
You’re right, he is paid a bit more than what he’s worth, but to clear him out would cost us something else (i.e. the pick we had to send to TB for the Melichar/Brookbank salary dumps.) Other GMs know the same thing.

I’m happy about the signing, now we need to lock up Ruutu for 3 years at a good price (i thinking around $3 million a year, but I would perfer around $2.7 or $2.8). We also need a defenseman, even though I see one of the Albany kids playing a lot this year. And can someone please take Kaberle to Siberia and leave him there.
Just listened to that interview!! =) damn I cant wait for October!
