It's Time For Some Defense
OK it sounds like we have a good roster set with some depth on forwards, now it's time for some defense. In JR's interview on '99.9 The Fan' he never even mentioned Kaberle's name with the discussion on the defense unless I missed it. He did say if Babchuck and Seidenberg are gone then he will have to go out and sign a "top four defense man for the team". The only free agency list I can find on NHL.com is for all free agents and it doesn't list if their forwards or defense. Does anyone have a good link on which defense men are still left out there? Are there some good ones left that we can afford?
My greatest wish would be for JR to trade Eaves and Kaberle away with some money and get a big top defense man and move up a couple of the Rats to our line-up for some experience as well as depth. I really don't see anyone knocking on our door for Eaves or Kaberle. I'm not dissing them, but they just don't bring anything to this team that we need IMO.

Try NHL.com; I think that link has a free agent tracker that keeps track of defensemen, forwards, and goalies, whether they have signed or not and where they are heading.

I’ve been using the Free Agent tracker at ESPN.com
This link is already filtered to just show defensemen. You can see your other sorting options at the top.

My “top 4 D” FA picks…
Chelios (yes, I said it)
Paul Mara
Darryl Sydor
And I don’t like any of the rest, so rename group to “top-3 top-4”"
Honestly, I don’t think we need any more d-men. We went through this last year and didn’t end up really needing anyone. Besides, we’ve got MACBAIN on the up. I heard he can stop a whole forward line just by whispering the words “peace be with you”…

Mara and Sydor yes. Chelios no. Not just because I was born a black hawks fan, but because he’s really a third pair guy right now who is only going to play about 10 to 12 minutes a night.

Here’s another good FA resource: http://nhlnumbers.com/freeagents
I like Jay McKee or Ossi Vaananen. McKee would command more money than JR would pay, but he just got bought out by STL, so he should be willing to play for less in combo with STL’s money. Awesome shot blocker. The question is whether his injury issues are behind him or not. I think it’s worth a shot.

Don't you lose some of your buyout if you sign with another club, though?
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

Nope. Signing with another team does not effect buyout money from another team. Coaches lose money from the previous team if they sign with a new team, but players do not.

Hedican anyone?
Actually I like your choices Caniac1026 too, even Chelios for some depth. I don’t know if I’m just being nostalgic, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Hedican for a 1 year contract for less than 1 million. He did leave with a +16 his last year with the Canes. This is if we need depth only, not for a top 4 man.
As far as McBain, even JR has said he is ready for the NHL possibly, but he didn’t think he was top 4 as of yet. Hopefully he can show his stuff without getting too injured in the process adjusting to the NHL players.
Thanks for the links. I liked 59’s link best because you could make the list to be what you wanted it to be. It seems the names on the D UFA list that sounded familar have already been signed or traded.
I hate that Sidenberg is asking too much for JR, it would just be nicer for us if he could be signed. He did a good ‘B’ job for us last season.
I actually laughed out loud when I saw Tannabe’s name on the list as a UFA, but I won’t go there, I’m not in the mood to beat a dead horse. OK maybe just a little…his hockey days are over, I hope he didn’t lose all his past Cane money in the stock market. I mean that litterally, because I do want him to be able to take care of his family, hopefully he will find his way into coaching or something related to hockey. He was actually one of the nicest players for the fans we have ever had. I wish him well.

Hedican
That’s up there with Gillimus’ half-joking suggestion to bring Commodore back. Maybe placing a little too high a priority on marketing and photo-ops. (I suspect the Coach Mo Re-hab Camp for Lost Veterans might have reached a point of diminishing returns.)
Besides, on Hedican – Kristy says “No.” (with apologies to Forslund).
What we need is someone who’s hungry and needs to prove himself (say, with a day at home with the Cup) and has the size, speed/strength and hockey-sense to do so. (See Tim Gleason, Joni Pitkanen). I want another guy ready to do the impossible for an 80-second comeback. Surely we can find that for <$3mil? Do we have that much left in the pot?
I also like Wallin paired with McBain – at least on paper. Wallin knows hockey, and from what I’m hearing, what he lacks in physicality McBain can cover. Consistency plus energy = synergy. (I made that up) I see them as having real potential. What about Borer, ROdney Carson?

No to Hedican
I liked him while he was here, and hated to see him go, but It’s time to move forward. We have a good group of youngsters ready to come play with the big boys. We really have no need to sign Hedican again.

The "kids" need experience
Between Carson, Borer, Rodney and McBain; one of these guys has to fill a roster spot this year. With only 2 “D” men signed for 10-11 and Corvo probably leaving for more money, these kids will have to play an important role in 10-11. Stick one (or a group rotation) on the 3rd line with Wallin and see how they progress. I also wouldn’t mind trading an expiring contract or Eaves for a talented defenseman. There might be opportunities during the season to get a top 4 guy.
by PackPride17 on Jul 3, 2009 3:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree I want to see these young guys rotating through Raleigh in Oct and Nov. Let’s give em a chance to show their stuff on the big stage.
Just for reference since I know very little about these boys:
Carson is 23, 6-4, 220
Rodney is 25, 6-0, 200
(these 2 above listed on the regular roster)
Casey Borer, 23, 6-2, 205
Jamie McBain, 21, 6-2, 200 (shown in the depth chart, but not the roster)

I want to see McBain in the NHL next year… but def understand if he sits one more year. I see him getting in about 10-15 games, then back to the AHL.
I hope I am wrong.

After what happened 2 years ago with the injuries and the “flu” that depleted our forwards depth where we were at a point of desperation, I’m very weary of our defensive situation now. If we don’t have our defense set up with some good depth by November then we can kiss next season goodbye. JR has said on more than 1 occasion that he will probably have a few of our AHL’s on the royster next season after camp, but they are in way ready to be top 4 liners. Lets not forget how often our defensive line is out with injuries (Gleason, Wallin), what are we going to do then? We seem to assume that our current top 4 is never going to be out for any length of periods next season. Hopefully we will have our defense in place by November.
We have a top forward line in place with some great depth (hopefully Rutuu too) and we seem to have lost sight of our pending defensive demise for next season (it sounds like Sidenberg or Babchuck are long shots for our royster) with all the talk of no more money for a good top 4 defensiveman. Your team is nothing without a top defensive line in this NHL. Of course I’m not telling JR nothing he doesn’t already know, thank the Hockey Gods he’s the GM and not me.

I agree his play isn't exactly promising...
But I think it’s too soon to give up on Eaves at this point. If he can find the scoring touch he showed early in his career and stay a positive presence for the PK, he’d certainly be a valuable asset.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

Absolutely. He has it in him. He just needs to get it out already. When he does hopefully we will be set with forwards and we can use him as trade bait.
by packpigskinfan25 on Jul 4, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think the question with Eaves is if he has it in him. He had a 20 goal season in Ottawa. He clearly has it in him. The question with Eaves is even if he does have it in him can he get on to one of the top three lines. My money right now is on “no he can’t”. Maybe next year after Walker’s contract is up, but then there are the young guys like Bowman and Boychuk and Dalpe who are going to be ready to get big time NHL minutes. It’s the teams depth at forward that makes Eaves a likely person to trade, not his lack of talent.
by C-Leaguer on Jul 4, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Same song, 2nd verse.
We were saying the same thing last summer about Eaves. He had an entire season and playoffs to bring it on and he didn’t. Of course that is why no other team wants him or Kaberle for a trade, they watched them play hockey too.
C
by c59 on Jul 4, 2009 12:35 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i agree, the only way you get rid of Eaves or Kaberle is to put them as part of a trade package. And i think no one will take a package including Kaberle. He’s just going to be a contract we’ll have to eat this year and let him go.
by PackPride17 on Jul 4, 2009 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Same for Eaves, so sitting here and hoping is really our only options. Eaves however has some upside that might be worth it to us, or another team in the future. So basically all we can do is sit back and hope it happens.
by packpigskinfan25 on Jul 4, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You know Nashville might be willing to take Eaves for one of their many defensive prospects. They seem to have a lot of good defensive prospects. Sulzer, Laakso (get the whole Finnish connection going in Carolina), or Franson. That might be a way to get a good defensive player/prospect and clear a little bit of cap space.
by PackPride17 on Jul 4, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
it would be, but do we really need more prospects? It feels more like we need a “win now” type of top 4 D man. But you are right… good way to clear up some cap space to get that D man.
by packpigskinfan25 on Jul 4, 2009 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I definitely see your point, but I think Carolina’s issue is we don’t have anybody that teams want enough to get that type of player (at least anybody we are willing to trade). We are on the older side with Whitney, Walker, Brind’Amour. Even Samsonov, Cullen, and Corvo are not “spring chickens.” The only way we get a top 4 guy is through free agency and we don’t generally spend that type of money or a trade where we take on additional salary. I would love to get Coburn from Philly (a big, young top 4 guy), but the only way that would possibly happen is if we take on Briere’s contract and give up a 1st along with an affordable package to them.
by PackPride17 on Jul 4, 2009 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Duncan Keith?
Because of Chicago’s crazy spending and upcoming free agents, we might be able to steal Duncan Keith from them through a trade during the season. I have no idea what type of money he would want or trade package they might want.

Christian Backman
Here’s a guy who is probably outside of the team’s budget but could fit in if Eaves and Babchuk are traded (or possible Kaberle too). Not sure what he’s looking to get on the market. That said, if he could be signed for something like 3 years 10.5 million then the Canes would have Gleason, Pitkanen and Backman locked up at reasonable rates for the next few years and then could slowly work in the younger guys like McBain while keeping Wallin around on 1 year deals.
by C-Leaguer on Jul 4, 2009 3:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Backman sounds like a good prospect.
I remember hearing Backman’s name before, who did he play for CL? Hey we can’t expect to get a top D man to fit in now without paying those big bucks.
I agree that Eaves can and probably will be a talented player, I just don’t think he will be in our system. I do agree he is better trade bait than he is staying on our roster and I can see teams wanting him in their system and willing to take a chance on a deal with him. Unfortunately for us Eaves is a better package deal with Babchuck than with Kaberle for the money. I agree we are stuck with Kaberle, but hey maybe he will surprise us.
At some point I understand why the Islander’s picked Tavares with his talent and all the hype, but I agree with you CL, it made better sense for them to pick Hedman. Defensiveman in the NHL right now are like gold, forwards are like sterling silver. They should be picked up young, talented and while their affordable. They really are going to regret that move.
On Bubba’s front page Rutuu blog a poster posted a rumor that he heard of Alex Tanguay coming to Carolina, what do you all think of him? I’ve heard his name before, but don’t know anything about him.

Tanguay
I’m with you – know the name and have a positive impression.
I did a little surfing. He made $5.375 mil with MON last year.Do we need (meaning: can we afford) another winger at even half that price ($2.7)? At half, he’d be on the same level as Cole, Sammi, Walker and Ruutu (speculation on Ruuts).
Great stats – finished +13 with 41 pts in 50 games. Played previous 2 seasons at Calgary. Age 29.
Doesn’t sound like Rutherford would do this. He’s looking for Big-D I think.

50 games (career low)
41 points (career low)
and a +/- 13 (never had a +/- worse then +6 his rookie year, has had a outstanding + 157 for his career)
His worst season yet… but he is an awesome player. He would fit in great here. Im not saying that just based on stats either, I remember being impressed by him each time I have seen him play.
I dont see any way this happens at all unless Ruutu is allowed to walk.

Tanguay
I like Tanguay, but, with as deep as this team is at forward he doesn’t make sense. He may have on the first day of free agency before Cole and Rosey were re-signed. However, with those guys signed he doesn’t make much sense unless JR is packaging Ruutu with someone to bring in a defensemen.

Backman played for Columbus last season, but he originally came up with St. Louis. He’s a big strong defensemen. He’s had some injury issues, but nothing so much as Marty Havlat. He, like Cole, plays a tough game, so that’s going to cost him some games a year. He’s +1 for his career, but that’s mostly thanks to playing on lousy St. Louis teams (-15 the year after the lock out St Louis). He plays during all situations. He reminds me in many ways of Tim Gleason in that he’s maybe more of a 2nd pair guy than a top pair, but that’s hard to say given he’s played with St. Louis so much of his career. He posted good numbers last season with Columbus. I think the money is what’s most likely going to keep him from coming here, but the longer he stays out their the fewer suitors there will be.
by C-Leaguer on Jul 6, 2009 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Backman is a good solid defenseman. I wouldn’t mind having him hear if he’s paired up with an offensive minded defenseman. His currenty salary is on the high side when compared to his career stats. If we could get him for 2 years at around $2.5 or $2.75, I would probably go for it. With his injury history, I would not offer anything long term.

when he has little to no value league-wide?

by MichaelProcton on Jul 7, 2009 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unless he breaks out, he is a 4th liner that makes $1.4mil a season. If you could get a prospect or a 2nd round pick, take it. This team is loaded on forwards and a prospect or 2nd round pick doesn’t eat up cap space like Eaves does.
by PackPride17 on Jul 7, 2009 8:21 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That was my point.
We’ll NEVER get a pick that high or a prospect worth a damn for him because he has no value.

What I’m saying is shop him, see what you can get. Maybe package him with someone else, so we can get rid of his contract and have a little more cap space.

What do you think of this trade proposal?
Send Whitney, Eaves, and either a defensive prospect or 2nd round draft choice to Philly for Gagne and Coburn? It gives us a LW that can play of Staal’s line and a young, solid two-way defenseman that we could build around. Philly would get a LW with Stanley Cup experience to help out their young forwards, a young forward with potential, and a cheap defensive prospect. They would also get what they badly need, $1.6 million is cap space this year and Whitney ($3.55mil) could come off the books at the end of the year. I’m not sure if Philly or the Canes would do it, but it’s an idea.
by PackPride17 on Jul 5, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
JR wouldn't trade Whitney in last year of deal to someone in our conference
I like the idea of Backman, Ossi, or Beauchemin. I find it highly unlikely that Philly would let go of Coburn, he is a stud and should be a staple for the next several years.

Seidenberg gets some notice
Mirtles evaluation of remaining UFA D-men as of July 7
Our very own Seids gets the title picture. Here’s what he says:
In terms of even-strength play, I think Dennis Seidenberg may offer the best value, as he logged big-time minutes last season on a team that went to the conference finals and will likely at this point come fairly cheap. He’s also young and made just more than $1-million last season.
If he comes fairly cheap,as Mirtle predicts, than how are Seidenberg’s agent and JR “a million miles away” (as JR said on the radio last week)?

This piece made me think that just maybe Seids will return to Raleigh. We could do worse in terms of finding a “replacement” at our price, and maybe when reality sets in with the agent that the Seids isn’t likely to fetch 4-yrs, $15 mil even from the Kings, he’ll look for a 1-year deal here and test the waters again in 2010, after the Canes have another great post-season run.
