River Rats Add D Depth With Signing Of Jonathan Paiement
Our new friend Rat Byte at The Infestation — a blog covering the River Rats that is really doing some great work — is reporting that Jonathan Paiement has signed a deal with the Rats.
Paiement was among those injured in the February bus crash — Casey Borer, Joe Jensen and Nicolas Blanchard were the other players badly hurt — but had made an impression last year.
His addition as a potential top-six d-man may point to the Hurricanes planning on having one of their young blueliners — perhaps Brett Carson or Bryan Rodney — in Raleigh next season.
Again, be sure to visit The Infestation for up-to-date Rats news.

Wallin
This doesn’t sound like good news for Nicky. His spot on the blueline is the only one that isn’t certain. Hopefully we’ll get some good competition for that final spot in camp this year.
Still not a crook!
Unless something happens in training camp, I think Rodney might well be our sixth d-man this year with Wallin as a healthy scratch or to fill in for injuries. Conboy could also fill-in on the third defensive pairing as well as the fourth line as needed.

Thanks, Cory, for the tip on The Infestation (pretty clever eh!). It looks like a nice source for Rats updates.
Yes … I stumbled upon the site b/c it had linked to us. I chatted a bit with Rat Byte via e-mail and we’re goign to try and strike up an informal relationship that can benefit both sites. His insight and dedication is evident.

Eh...
I don’t think you can mark Paiement down for an automatic top-six spot in Albany. I think roster decisions will be dictated by the play of the big club skaters, not the signings of the little one.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
That’s why i said a potential top-six spot, not automatic.

While I will follow the Rat’s season this year more than ever, mostly I am eager to learn if the Canes AHL affiliate will be in Albany next year (10-11) or if they’ll find another place to play, closer to Raleigh.
When is the contract up and who makes this decision?
Let's go Canes!

Okay thanks. Did I see they only renewed for one year – so perhaps we might hear something by next spring?? Does the NHL (board of gov’s) have any say in this?
