Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

The Carolina Hurricanes brought two prospects back into the fold today.

Borer is a promising defenseman who was injured in the bus crash last year and suffered from a broken vertebra in his neck. He finished with four goals and six assists in Albany before the accident.

Peters had a 19-30-4 record, with a GAA of 2.89, and save percentage of .908 last season in Albany.

Both players signed contracts which will pay them $500,000 at the NHL level and $60,000 in the AHL.

Any details on Borer’s health? I’m guessing he didn’t return this season after the crash, just from the way his season stats are described above. I remember him doing better-than-you-might expect on his couple brief stints with the Hurricanes.

Have the Canes provided any updates on his status, the extent of his injuries (say compared to Cole in 06), or what they expect from him by the fall?

I just double-checked the press release and it does not mention his health status, but I think I remember reading somewhere that he made a full recovery and is expected to play at the start of the season. I will look into that.

Pretty sure I heard than too. Probably about 2-3 months after the wreck, so probably one of those that isn’t as bad as it sounds ( although ALL neck injuries are bad, but you know what I mean…….)

Satan is just a coping mechanism for monotheists.

Found this

Interview with Borer describing the extent of the injuries and his career with the Canes – from a hometown perspective.

Hope he’s past the injuries – seems like a very worthy prospect, especially given the Canes’ need for depth in defense.

He was ready to skate near the end of the season … he should make a full recovery.

Good to hear.

can he expect to see some increased time in Raleigh? I keep hearing McBain, McBain, McBain. But Borer seems like he should be in line in front of him. He’s nearly 3 years older (important for D) but he’s not on the Canes Depth Chart (though 3 other prospects are). Borer is shown on the regular roster.

What’s your take on what JR and Francis expect from him in the near term?

Is that the minimum contract $ at his age/experience?

it really depends on how he responds to two tough injuries. Physically, I understand he should be able to get to 100 percent. The hurdle will be mentally, I think … when I talked to him at prospect last summer, he clearly did not want to talk about the previous season’s knee injury. He has something to prove, and there are guys on his tail or already in front of him.

As for McBain … we should be excited about him. He may not yet be ahead of Borer and the others for a sot, but he has, IMO, always had a higher ceiling and brighter future than the rest of the D prospects. It’s been a loooong time since the Canes developed a defensive draft pick into a full-time, top-4 NHLer.

It’s been a loooong time since the Canes developed a defensive draft pick into a full-time, top-4 NHLer.

And for the first time in a while you can really sense a commitment to “shut down” Defense from the Canes management. Part of the progression from Lavi to Mo (and the evolution of the game in the NHL)?

A novice observation: the way some bloggers described Hedman this year as more valuable in the long-term than the sharp-shooters and playmakers, it made it seem like top D (<30 yrs old) is getting scarcer all the time.

Guess I’m just trying to understand what’s coming thru the pipeline since the UFA path to top-4 D seems like rough-going and big $. I’m not sure we have anyone we can realistically trade. (Unless Tampa Bay comes back looking for this year’s Brookbank and Melichar – was that a Gift from the Hockey Gods or what?!)

Borer

I Think Casey Borer is a great player and I loved watching him play in his few games with Carolina. I could see him becoming a top four defense in the future because he can really shut down players. He can also move the puck fairly well. I’m also glad we re-signed Justin Peters he is a true athlete/competitor and my favorite part about him is hes not afraid to drop the gloves.

I’m not sure bleedblackred is totally aware of what’s going on.

Another AHL fight (goalie vs goalie) featuring Peters. I remember this one now – it’s the shakey fan-camera and the screaming girls, which makes it seem really silly.

I’m stoked they’re both back, I’m a fan of both. Peters for his size and atheticism and Borer for his never-say-die playing style. I remember there were a couple games where he was on his stomach but still manage to bust up a couple breakaways.
The reason I advocate MCBAIN like a man-crushed record is that he’s young, still unthwarted by harsh injuries and I’m excited to see what he does in his first pro year. If Borer makes it back to his 2007 play level, I think we all know he’s capable of being a benefit to the team.
