Around SBN: Off Tackle Empire interviews Rich Rodriguez

The Carolina Hurricanes inked another player to a two-way deal today as ex-Toronto prospect, Jay Harrison, signed on with the Canes. Jason Karmanos had this to say about the big, 6'4 blueliner.

"Jay is a big defenseman who has been a depth player in the Toronto system since turning professional," said Karmanos. "His size and experience should allow him to compete for a roster spot with the Hurricanes next season."

Harrison started the season in the Swiss league last year, but ended up playing seven games for the Leafs.

Is this Josef Melichar version two, or does Jim Rutherford have other plans for the Carolina blueline?

Here is the scouting report on Harrison-

Assets: Has big-league size and strength. Displays the profile of a classic stay-at-home blueliner with defensive and physical upside

Flaws: Still has trouble with speedy forwards, and must improve his coordination in order to become a full-time NHLer.

Career Potential: Number 6 or 7 defenseman

this is not melichar 2
because:
a. JR didnt give him 1 mil
b. JR didnt give him 1 way

If this is Melichar v 2 can’t we just go ahead and trade him for Jussi Jokinen v2?

Agree, and as Cory told me in an email, he should not be considered a “veteran defenseman”.

Bubba where did you find the scouting report on Harrison?

Please turn me on to a site with good scouting reports on NHL Players, can’t for the life of me find the sites I used to visit…
This is move is to shore up our AHL squad, not the Canes. At least I hope that’s the case!

Sportsnet

This site is really helpful. You can stats in just about any category plus in-depth scouting reports. This is Jay Harrison’s here.

by bleedblackred on Jul 9, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I just used the roster link from this site to get the info.

http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/70710/Jay_Harrison

maybe they get their info from Sportsnet? This site also lists transactions/injuries/suspensions which is cool info as well.

TSN used to have the same scouting reports as Sportsnet … so this “Fantasy Sports Services” must be making some coin.

Cory, maybe we should start our own “Fantasy Sports Services” :-)

I second that....

Would be fun… Thats for sure. have two or four divisions of ten to twelve teams. each division has the full talent pool of the nhl. have a playoff system in place to crown one CanesCountryChampion.

They say they'll give him a shot to make the team.

And I think he’s got the right combination of youth and experience that they could feel good about him for a semi-extended (15+ games) stay in the NHL.

I read this on Twitter at Food Lion and it reminded me of a feeling I had as a kid.

If this is our Veteran D-man Jason K was referring to in this morning’s N&O, I feel kinda like I asked my mom to buy Red Bull and she came home with Food Lion brand diet orange soda, “because it was on sale.”

Let's go Canes!

A 26-year-old with 20 games of NHL experience is not experienced in anybody's book.

The guy’s not even on a one-way deal.

I hear ya

but when I read more commentary here, based on the wording of the Tweet from the Canes compared to what I was expecting (I’m still thinking the Ruutu contract is “imminent”) the disappointment was as harsh as the bare fluorescent lights of the Food Lion.

Haha...he's big and he's 26.

How should they have worded it? And where did they use the word imminent on twitter?

imminent was used by the N&O to describe how close they were (yesterday morning) to signing Ruutu.

Eh

No – I’m not mad at any one. But in the context of “imminent” (no matter the source) every Canes Tweet holds potential for something a lot more intriguing than signing this guy.

I was in fact trying to be funny about
1- this eagerness I ( and other CC summer obsessives who just can’t seem to let go of hockey season) feel to get Ruutu (and/or a nice addition to the blue line) signed and
2 -how we keep just getting these “depth” deals the last couple days.

Apparently my efforts at humor failed miserably. Can we please stop talking about it now?

It’s all good. I just wondered what was drawing your ire (as I read it.) And I’m sure you know, but these depth deals are kind of what most of our offseasons are going to be about if we’ve got to lock up FAs of our own and use most of our payroll to do it.

by Iggy Reilly on Jul 9, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

here's a blurb from Canes Now on this
Adding Harrison, in theory, shouldn’t preclude the Hurricanes from adding a veteran defenseman as Karmanos said the team was working on Wednesday. It’s also possible that the team will find a way to keep defenseman Anton Babchuk.

Babchuk, a restricted free agent, wants more than $1 million he was offered. The restricted free agent lost his arbitration rights when he played his entire 2007-08 season in Russia.

Babchuk scored 16 goals this season, which ranks him in the top eight in the NHL among defenseman. He was also a +13, tops among Carolina defensemen. Those are two big reasons he thinks he should get a raise this season, even if others disagree.

It will be interesting to see if Babchuk is offered much more than the Hurricanes have. If not, he may come back to the Hurricanes on his own, if the team hasn’t already signed someone else.

this is from Javier Serna who seems to be covering the Canes, perhaps while Chip Alexander is enjoying a vacation?

I think this is what you're asking??

Have you seen the Puck Daddy ratings of Free Agent Frenzy? the link has been posted here at CC by a couple of us.

Here’s what he said of the Canes (perhaps my favorite thing I’ve read about Jim Rutherford and his management style):

Carolina Hurricanes: See that thing over there? Five digits and a palm, smacking around two guys looking to leave town? Yeah, that’s Jim Rutherford’s pimp hand. It’s strong.
The Carolina GM said both Erik Cole(notes) and Chad LaRose(notes) would test the market, and they did. Cole was the first one to come running back to Eric Staal(notes) for two years and $5.8 million, which is a pay cut from his previous deal.
After Rutherford told the media he had given up on re-signing LaRose … well, look who decided the grass wasn’t greener last night, to the tune of two years and $3.4 million?
Add that to getting Jussi Jokinen(notes) done (two years, $3.4 million) before the Frenzy, and it was a very good week for the Canes — even with the lingering questions about UFA Dennis Seidenberg(notes) and RFAs Anton Babchuk(notes) and Tuomo Ruutu(notes). GRADE: B+

This team needs PAUL "Mighty Beard" MARA

Solid defenseman, great character/locker room guy (should have been captain of the Rangers IMHO), and best post game interview EVER a few years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfkR1gnKjEU

I say 1 mil for Mara, 500 thousand for the beard.

The one thing I like about the Harrison signing (well, not the one thing … I’m glad it’s two-way) is this guy played under Maurice in Toronto. So it’s not like Melichar, who I don’t think had any ties to anyone in the org. I’d bet Bubba’s left hand that Mo either recommended or gave a good review of this kid.

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

by MichaelProcton on Jul 10, 2009 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I talked to Cory about this signing earlier today and my feelings haven’t changed. I don’t get this signing at all. Not sure if we really need the “depth” when we have 4 young guys that could be ready to make the jump. You kept hearing the Canes say they were in the market for a veteran, defenisve minded D-man so why even spend this money for someone who doesn’t fit that when for $1 million more, you could have made a great signing in Nick Boynton who signed a one year deal for 1.5 mil today. That was the kind of player we need and I just don’t see how the canes are better today with Harrison than they were yesterday.

I’m glad (to an extent) with the off season but I don’t think we are a better team overall right now than we were last season. We are the same team and when other teams are making changes to their roster to improve their team, I don’t feel the Canes have done that. Just my two cents, I’m done now!

by sticker on Jul 9, 2009 11:02 PM EDT reply actions

I'm certain they're not budgeting $500K on this signing.

If he plays a full season for the big boys, we have a bigger problem than Harrison.

And with all of the young players on our team and in the system, it’s certainly conceivable that we could be better without changing any of our big club personnel.

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

by Lrccolt4 on Jul 10, 2009 12:16 AM EDT reply actions

He’s just another young kid with some talent signed to a cheap deal who we’ll most likely just get a chance to see play in Albany.

Sorry to impede on another great article, and to speak way off base. But, i have been really busy lately, and am basking in the glory of this article-

http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/teamrankings

I received a wonderful personal email from GM Rutherford today- it must have been personally sent to me….hahahaha-JK JR.

Yes, I am way, way, way way way…and again…way too late on responding to this article, but it is really quite fantastic!! No response needed- because I am more than a day late and well over a dollar short on speaking about this. I am just thrilled that some individuals at ESPN find our organization to be as fantastic as I believe them to be.

I got that email too (not to rain on your parade) and thought it was a great gesture – but I was wondering if it was a typical thing for a GM to do to the teams fanbase email list-serve – ie as a Pittsburgh resident, do you know if Mario sent such a letter to all the Pens fans thanking them for their help in winning the Cup?

I would say it's not rare, but it's not typical either.

Some teams are in frequent communication with their STH (monthly, say), whereas some teams will only send out correspondence when it’s time to renew or they’re changing a policy. But for (relatively) big events like this (or a major trade, or a successful event of some sort, etc.) I’d say you shouldn’t be surprised to have seen something.
