Quick Hits and Tidbits - August 16th
The Jimmy V Golf Tournament starts at 9AM on Sunday. The Hurricanes are usually prevalent during the event and this year will be no different. Erik Cole, Joe Corvo, Rod Brind'Amour, and Chad LaRose will attend. They will be joined by announcer John Forslund, ex-Cane Bates Battaglia, and a number of other celebrities.
The Hockey News has been updating their selections daily for how the conference races might turn out. They have the Canes finishing sixth.
In case you missed it, Paul Branecky posted an interesting article about how several ex-Hurricanes have made good coaches. Great job on research done here.
Albany will be interesting to follow this year with several recent draft picks getting a start on their professional careers. The Rats schedule was released this week.
Ross McKeon from Yahoo! Sports published his "power rankings" on Wednesday. McKeon has the Canes ranked 13th in the league, but fails to add anything knowledgeable in his note about the team. Of course the obligatory comment about the Whalers is made along with a dig at the logo. Good old Mr. McKeon is as predictable as ever. This is the same guy who once wrote about how he thought the Southeast Division should be contracted. Ted Leonsis was not amused.
McKeon responded to Leonsis by saying that his "suggestion" was made tongue in cheek, but still went on and on about why he thought contraction was a good idea. Confused much?
Could McKeon be "Two Line Pass" in disguise?

We are so unworthy of an NHL team. I mean, really, what do we know about hockey. If it ain’t got 4 wheels and alot of left hand turns, it ain’t for us. WHOOOO DOGGIE!!! Look at Jr. go!!!!!!!! They can keep all of that cold stuff up north. Buncha yankees and their voodoo sports.
Satan is just a coping mechanism for monotheists.
The River Rats will play in Norfolk, Fri and Sat, Nov 27-28 (over Thanksgiving weekend…) That’s very tempting…Great way to check out all the young prospects.
And I might even hope that Hedman will be getting some seasoning in the AHL.(jk)

Prospects?
you mean hot, young, rugged and oh so manly hockey studs for you to drool over?
Other than those of us who fit that description and post on this board of course.

"Moi ???" said hockeymom, incredulous.
lcd – What do you take me for?….Those boys are half my age! (Wasn’t it Procton who said Paradis was “a cutie”?)
I wanna see the future of the Hurricanes, not just eye-candy! Didja see how cheap the AHL tickets are? And we could tour Williamsburg too – an educational trip !!
(However, Hedman is a whole ’nother matter)
And I’m sure there are many attractive people who post to Canes Country. And also some who are a little bit off naming any names)
Seriously tho
QUESTION:
I’ve never been to an AHL game but understand the minor leagues of hockey are a little rougher (both the play and the crowd) than one sees at the RBC. Is this accurate? Does anyone have advice on whether it’s an appropriate place for kids ages 5, 9 or 12?

It's hit or miss...
But you’re no more likely to be seated next to a rowdy/disruptive individual at an AHL game than at the RBC. If you’re worried, know you can probably find somebody to reseat you from customer service.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

1/2 your age. Like that one radio commercial I heard where a woman is saying, “My son? No, he’s not my son. My son’s older”
Enjoy taking long, hard looks at the eye candy prospective players for the Canes!

Just be careful
Norfolk isn’t somewhere you would like to be caught once the sun goes down. I would suggest parking on the south side of the Scope parking lot, and then booking it out immediately after the game. Don’t look back, and whatever you do, DO NOT STOP until you get to Chesapeake.
Good luck, and Godspeed my friend……. ( have you had your TB booster lately? )

assuming TB doesn’t refer to the Lightning, is it really THAT BAD??? I used to fly out of that airport regularly to get to the OBX. Seemed like an average small city.

Norfolk
My son and I went to “the game” during the lockout, the one where just about everyone threw a punch, even Cam Ward. We drove straight there from Raleigh and left right after the game. I didn’t see anything that made me feel uncomfortable. All cities have their bad sections. So not sure what wilmnoca is talking about.
Report from Jimmy V
Great event, but seemed to be lightly attended this year from both a spectator and participant perspective. It was my first time going so I can’t compare to previous events at Prestonwood, but I thought the crowd looked small. As a State grad who was there when Valvano coached, it was a pleasure to attend and lots of fun to meet Terry Gannon and Bob Valvano and of course to see Sidney Lowe. I love that the event can finally be held on State’s campus; the participants had very positive things to say about the course, of course it needs to mature but it plays long and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Arnold Palmer (course designer) was the honorary starter so it was a thrill to have him in attendance. And all for a great and worthy cause.
Canes represented well, and not surprisingly they’re a big draw for the gallery. Took a few pictures to tide us over until camp starts.
Super images! – thanks for sharing.
And that image of Chad swinging his driver shows he hasn’t missed too many days at the gym this summer.

Did he ever tie his shoe laces?
Old Arnie looks mighty fine too.

Any other "pre-season power-rankings"
for the NHL?
All I seem to find is NBA stuff.

CNNSI, from today:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/allan_muir/08/14/summer.rankings/index.html?eref=T1
We’re eighth, down from fourth at the end of the season:
There’s nothing sexy about them, but they didn’t use some Jedi mind trick to finish the regular season 13-3-2 and then take out two division winners. Their lineup should be solid after GM Jim Rutherford returned all of his key FAs and brought in veteran Aaron Ward, who’s an underrated presence on the blueline — an appropriate addition for the most underappreciated squad in the game.
And then there’s some fool some place called maxhockey.com that has us 21st…behind the freaking Thrashers (20th) and Lightning (7th…seriously.) Apparently he’s impressed by the way the Thrashers played the final two months of the season and Tampa’s FA additions. As for us?
And you can only imagine what their ranking would be if they didn’t have Cam Ward.
Tool. Hardcore.

Thanks for the links, MP. In SI’s poll that makes us #4 in the East, behind, PIT, BOS and PHI. That’s a little better than THN gave us (#6). From this I take it they think we’ll win the SE. Wow.
FWIW, SI has NJD at #12 (6th in the east) and the Caps at #11 (5th in the east). This compared to THN having NJD at #5 and the Caps in the Top 3.
How the heck did Detroit finish 7th at the end of the 08-09 regular season?
I saw a fanpoll at TSN a month or so ago that had the Canes at 23rd. Canadians!

Here's one from Topix
http://www.topix.com/forum/nhl/TKLGA0OH5J7BQLMIT
They list the Canes 7th in the East.
Behind Buffalo who’s in 6th.
NJD is #1 in the East.
