Around SBN: Dog Football! Which Breeds Are Best Suited For The Gridiron?

The Hockey News posted on their site a list of the top-10 Calder Trophy candidates for rookie of the year, and Carolina forward Zach Boychuk comes in at No. 10.

While the article may be off a bit — Boychuk's chances of playing his way on to the roster this preseason dropped dramatically with this week's signing of center Stephane Yelle — it's been a long time since a Canes prospect has been considered to be in the running for the award.

I think it would take quite a bit to see Zack up here for more than 10 games. The way I see it is it would take at least 2 injuries up front (more specifically up the middle) for him to get any major ice time. And he would have to light it up in training camp/AHL I think the signing of Yelle just reinforces that.

Would be very surprised if he played in much more than he did last year. That assumption is based on the depth of the team, not the skill set/development of the youngster.

what do you guys think?

I would not at all be surprised to hear he holds up his end of the bargain in TC.

He wowed everybody with basically skating alone last year. Think of what he might do now that he’s healthy.

Big Camp

I tend to agree w/ u but i’ve heard in the past that GM’s like this kinda problem. if he lights it
up in camp, they usually find a spot for him. that’s what i’d like, cause that means we’re a
little better than we thought (and i think we’re damn good) . either way, we’re gonna be
“way deep” this year. CAN’T WAIT!!

I was surprised they said Boychuk would have a shot on the roster, above Brandon Sutter (who Bubba featured at the head of his story on the effects of hiring Yelle).

Is Sutter not regarded as talented enough to be a Calder nominee, or has he surpassed the limits to be considered a rookie after last season?

Someone needs to clarify for me again how the roster numbers work: If we like having Boychuk, but not Conboy who has a one-way contract, how many healthy scratches can we have, etc…?

We have 23 on the NHL roster, dress 12 F + 6 D + 2 G (20 players) per game. Our conversations here have focused on those 20 plus Conboy as “odd man out”. That’s only 21. Who would be the other 2?

Not sure how injured reserve works in this.

I’m pretty sure Sutter exhausted his rookie status last season. From what I’ve found, a player has to play fewer than 25 games the previous year (or 26 the previous two) to be considered a rookie. Sutter played well over that with 50 games.

by caniacgirl on Aug 21, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think sutter has exhausted his rookie status. for atleast 2/3 or the season.

as far as healthy scratches it seems to me that other teams tend to have more health scratches than we do. Is that because we normally lack depth or is it the fact that we normally have injury problems, lol?

If im not mistaken (please correct me if I’m wrong) you can have up to 50 players under nhl contract. So I dont think that its going to matter how many healthy scratches we have. The thing that would effect it is the salary cap. Which surprisingly enough could become an issue this year under the right circumstances. (never in my wildest dreams did i ever think i would say that)

by CarolinaCanes on Aug 21, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

A team can carry up to 50 players under NHL contract but they can only carry 23 healthy players at the NHL level. A team can go over 23 if it puts a player on the injured reserve. The Canes often times carry less than 23 players at the NHL level. They do this to save money.

by C-Leaguer on Aug 22, 2009 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Saving money is one aspect, but it also is a waste of manpower to have three folk just sit in the press box every game. Better to have them playing in Albany than sitting here. (especially prospects) There is usually little need to carry more than one extra defenseman and one extra forward, if everyone is healthy.

Sutter falls under both categories.

He’s not a dynamic enough player to put up stats and win votes, and he’s no longer a rookie.

Could Yelle end up being part of a trade package?

With all the buzz about Boychuck joining the team from the NHL and if he has a good camp being brought to Raleigh instead of Albany, I just wondered if Yelle with Babchuck & a future draft pick could be a package deal JR is considering for another good point defenseman for the team? Just a rambling thought, not really expecting it.

I love the signing of Yelle for 550k—-JR is brilliant!

Teams just don’t do that b/c it puts them in a bad spot in future negotiations … you don’t want to be the team that signs guys and immediately trades them away.

Speaking of poor behavior, I thought the piece on Stanley Cup of Chowder on the Canes’ Yelle siging with us was a little tacky.

(not to besmirch a fellow SBNation hockey blog, but was it necessary to write:

I guess one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

about a former team member who contributed to a phenomenal season for your homeboys? Sounds like sour grapes.)

His new one...

Says that Canes fans are “whining” about the VS schedule and that we are from “Gooberville”.

Somebody needs to have a sit-down with that boy. (I remember him bragging he was 25 when I accused him of being 24)

Isn’t he the one that LOVED A. Ward? I guess our #4 is now trash because he’s a ’Cane?

yep

same guy!

Now Yelle is “trash” and Ward is “old and not very good”….

Not gonna happen.

You don’t sign guys and then immediately trade them. Plus, where would the interest be given it took him this long to get a contract.
