Cam Ward Back on the Ice Today

Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward is back on the ice today with a "full range of motion", according to Head Trainer and Conditioning Coach, Pete Friesen.  Ward elected to stay off the ice yesterday at Canada's Olympic Orientation Camp in Calgary because of a sore back.

"He woke up Sunday with some discomfort in his back and was checked out with an MRI, which found nothing.  It's just bad timing for Cam", said Friesen, who confirmed that the goalie was feeling better today.

Will this be something that comes up from time to time during the season?  The Hurricanes are no strangers to preseason injuries as Rod Brind`Amour and Justin Williams both injured themselves before training camp started last season.  Scott Walker then broke his hand in an exhibition game.

Carolina will be hoping for better luck at the beginning of this year.

Okay – I think I feel better now. How did Friesen seem to feel about it?

THANKS FOR THE UPDATE!

Hard to read Friesen’s tone, so I won’t attempt. We will have to take the words at face value.

Gotcha. Sigh.

Y’know, I’m so starved for real hockey news I was hoping you received subliminal signals in his voice that revealed Wardo’s expected W-L, GAA and Save %. Maybe even whether he might make the final ballot for the Vezina…. ;) (I’m kidding, hockey gods! it’s a joke!)

38 days, 2 hrs, 52 mins.

BTW – your “Cam’s on the ice today” tweet beat ice_chip’s by 22 minutes. Yo baby!

I wonder how early it was when Friesen called Cam this morning. I’m thinking 6 am or so. :)

Which would be 4 am in Calgary? Sounds right.

I wonder how early Rutherford called Friesen?

LOL – he “sleeps funny” and a nation of Caniacs holds their breath…

(hope so – but it did sound from ALL the quotes that he was making sure he was in good shape for his Hurricanes.)

Oh No..............

A couple of weeks ago, Jordan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals was reported as having some discomfort in his pitching elbow……….two weeks later, he is at home recovering from Tommy John surgery…………ouch. Backs are a wierd thing. Herniated disks and the like…………I hope it is just muscular.

You shouldn't be able to sleep funny until past thirty

He seems real young for this. I was thirty-two before i learned about sleeping funny. I hope this what all the goalie training with barasso will help to alleviate. Maybe he just didn’t like the hotel room bed.

I think goalies are 30 by the time they’re 20.

Great news! Frankly, I’m glad that he didn’t skate yesterday as a precaution; he’s got his hockey priorities straight!

I first learned about sleeping funny on my Oma’s bronze-age couch at the ripe old age of 17. Never again that couch… I slept on the floor from then on.

Am I the only one seeing this for what it is?

Ok Ward plays the Pitt playoff series with an injured back from the end of the Boston Series which was reported by John Forslund after the home games on 99.9 The Fan. Now Ward has “back discomfort” just when he is starting to get back on the ice for the Olympic camp. I’m a surgical nurse and do surgery everyday with Orthopedic and Neurosurgeons and we’re all in agreement this is from the same back injury from the playoff series being re-aggravated. We all better be prepared to see a # 2 goalie on the ice in October. Back injuries don’t always go away with rest and Ward has had the summer to rest his back and now it’s “sore”. Sorry I don’t see this as a coincidence.

I’m with Cory get Manny Fernandez on the phone…Help!!!

I’m with you C … back problems are no laughing matter. Many a sport career have been ruined by them. It makes me wonder if this will hold up his long-term deal.

You can add me to that list, too. I’ve been having back problems for over 10 yrs now, and I’m only 32. So I can more than relate.

It’s hurricane related, too (the small “H”, not the capital one). My parents went out of town and a hurricane hit, so I had to ready the house by myself. Lifted a large glass table that was on the back patio to take it to the garage, and I literally heard something snap in my back. I’ve had to be careful how I sleep, or any heavy lifting, etc., ever since then or I can end up with a sore back for days or even weeks at a time where I have to spend most of my time lying flat on my back. Stupid docs just shrug me off whenever I’ve said anything about it because they “know” I’m too young to have back problems, so I really don’t even know what exactly is wrong still all this time later.

It was my senior year in college, too, and I’d put off taking Phys Ed until then. For any of you who have had a bad back, imagine trying to scoop down to get a ground ball in softball followed by several hours of sitting in uncomfortable wooden desk chairs afterward. That semester was hell…

I’d love to be able to play some rec hockey, but there’s no way I could even consider ever playing goalie because of it.

I'm with you too

If this thing has not gone away yet, whats to say it wont be an issue during the season…

Hopefully it wont be a MAJOR one… that is all we can pray for.

See that makes perfect sense; over on other message boards, I was called Chicken Little and told not to panic. I’m still not 100% convinced this isn’t something more serious, but I guess we have to take their word for it that the MRI didn’t show anything abnormal and he’s good to go.

by caniacgirl on Aug 25, 2009 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Wouldn’t it show up in the MRI if something was structurally wrong? I guess they could be lying to us – doubt it though. If Cam’s back were that bad off, I doubt he would’ve worked out the next day. And having a former goalie as your GM, you’d think JR would have either signed a goalie before yelle, alberts, kost, or would have strongly discouraged him from attending the Olympic workouts.

I’m not saying he’s 100% healthy, but I wouldn’t be too concerned just yet. Not being 100% at this point in the offseason isn’t that unusual after a long playoff run, and that grueling stretch Cam played the last third of the season.

That’s the thing about backs (and necks) … things can come back OK on tests, but still cause pain and discomfort. That’s why people complain of injuries to those areas when they’re trying to fraud someone following an accident, work injury, ect.

by Cory Lavalette on Aug 26, 2009 8:50 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s the only thing right now that worries me. Will cam be the 70 start guy we thought he could be??? With Letnemin backing him up I sure hope so. Does cause some concern. We will have to wait and see. I do agree that it is doubtful the org would have alowed him to go forward with this if it where a problem. ( They could have “strongly discouraged” it ;).

With the rest that Ward has had, he may have felt good and thought he was fine.

I doubt anyone knew or anticipated this happening including Ward, but after getting back on the ice and assuming the goalie position it hit him by surprise. I’m thinking he was probably on the ice a few days before the 1st official practice for the Olympic camp to warm up and re-aggravated his back. He’s probably in denial right now. The worst injury a goalie can have is a back injury, there is no quick fix even with surgery. It’s months of physical therapy before you can resume regular activities. I’m not saying Ward needs surgery, but just coming home and resting for 2 weeks probably is not going to mend his back problem.

We have to remember Friesen just like any mouth piece for the Canes is under NHL rules not to disclose info on players injuries. Their not going to come out and give us a full report of what they may or may not have found. The Olympic committee and Olympic hockey teams are not governed by NHL rules and can disclose anything they want about a players injury when it happens in their world. We will find out more through them than we will with the Canes organization. I doubt JR has slept well the last 2 nights.

I’m just afraid with the Canes training camp starting on Sept 12th (2 1/2 weeks from now)
that Ward’s “sore back” may not be ready for some grueling practicies. I hope my that raw knot in my gut is just indigestion.

We just need to be prepared mentally that it is a possibility that Ward may not be 100% in October.
