No Red/White Scrimmage This Year - Hurricanes Release Training Camp Schedule
The Carolina Hurricanes released their training camp schedule yesterday, and for the first time since I can remember they will not be holding an intra-squad scrimmage this year. In some years they have had more than one scrimmage, but there are fewer camp invitees this time around and time is short because the Canes start the season on October 2.
Also, the prospects will have already played in a tough prospect tournament in Traverse City, Michigan. The coaching staff will have a good chance to review their performances and make evaluations based upon the results of that tournament.
Training camp officially opens on September 12 as the players will take mandatory physicals and have photo shoots, but the players actually hit the RBC ice for the first time on September 13. The Canes will be facing the Nashville Predators for a preseason game in Raleigh later that same week on Friday night, September 18.
All of the on ice practice sessions at the RBC will be open to the public except for September 19 and September 26 which are home football games for the NC State Wolfpack. The parking lots will not be accessable for hockey fans those days.
Keep in mind that several of the Canes are already skating informally at the Rec Zone from 10 to noon each weekday. Those sessions are also open to the public. Our unofficial Canes Country photographer, LTD, has photos of Monday's practice here.

He used to be the club goalie at NC State. Now he often fills in at practices when the Canes need another goalie. He was at prospect camp, since Murphy was the only other goalie around.

LTD – thanks for these awesome photos. WOW! Just what I wanted to see. I’ll check back often. (Next I want to see Cam Ward in action – if he’s back in town next week). I appreciated the labels to help me identify the non-Canes.
So, Aaron Ward in black – was that supposed to mean something ;)
(oh and Bubba, your writing was good too).

I went to Camp Brind’Amour yesterday and the guys who were there didn’t look too rusty. Other than the two goaltenders who were foreign to everyone there… Bates Battaglia was there and we all know him…. But there was one other guy who nobody knew. He looked to be wearing Lightning colors, but the non-roster guys have to wear their jerseys in-side-out (not sure if they have to, but they did)…. I asked Chip Alexander who the guy was but he didn’t know (would have been more of a shock if he did know.)
So that is still a mystery to me…..

By any chance, did one of the goalies look like this?

Oh well – that’s Manny Fernandez in th photo (tho you probably knew that). I thought maybe JR had him in to “try out”. I’m still not buying the company line on Wardo’s back problems.
Boy – those kids must have been in 7th heaven.

Mystery Goalie
I wasn’t at practice yesterday or today but LGC identified the mystery goalie as Jeff Zatkoff who is affiliated with the LA Kings. Miami University grad. I think he may be a friend of Kevyn Adams.
I won’t be back over to the RecZone this week but hoping to pop back over sometime next week to catch others as they trickle back into town.

Some more information about the mystery man in net courtesy of Luke.
Jeff Zatkoff, a third-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 2006 who played for the United States at the World Junior Championships, joined the current and former Hurricanes on the ice this week, with usual practice goalie Jorge Alves in the other net.
Zatkoff, who played three years at Miami (Ohio), ended up here because his girlfriend is from Cary. He called fellow Miami product and former Hurricanes forward Kevyn Adams to see if there was anywhere he could skate. Adams put him in touch with Rod Brind’Amour, which is how Zatkoff ended up on the ice this week.
“I’ve spent the past three summers here, but this year instead of shacking up with her parents I got a place of my own,” Zatkoff said. “It’s really nice to get some ice time before I head out to Los Angeles.”

For the training camp (Camp Mo?) – is there any meaning to who is assigned to Group A or Group B? (is it a skill or seniority thing, or are the veterans and prospects mixed together)
Does it stay the same throughout the 2 weeks?

“Camp Mo” will be a lot different than “Camp Lavi” was…. “Camp Lavi” featured 9,435 players and eventually cut down to 22 (or however many).
Mo pretty much already knows who he wants on the team so he will only have 30 to 40 players (most likely).

I think JR said there would be 40 -44 campers, which like you said, is the smallest number in a long time. I think you’re right about Mo. He must be so pumped for the season with this crew. (And I’d bet he’s in town and settled in his new home since his kids likely started school this week). I’m looking forward to hearing from him.

The Traverse City tourney will go a long way in determining who gets a camp invite.

With football on Sundays and no Red & White scrimage game, attendance will be down for the Carnival.
Of course they will have a good crowd of the kiddies. I remember when they had 2 Red & White scrimage games back to back in one week a couple of years ago. I understand with the preseason game 2 days before not having the scrimage game, but it still sucks. It won’t be the same just watching the guys practicing, but of course I will be there anyway.
