Rod Brind`Amour gears up for coming season
Chip Alexander has a nice article in this morning's News and Observer about "The Captain". Perhaps Chip saw our recent poll and decided to ask Brind'Amour about the captaincy?
Brind'Amour, 39, is the captain of the Carolina Hurricanes. While saying the team isn't lacking for leaders, wearing the "C" is a designation he takes very seriously, has upheld honorably and intends to maintain.
Many fans seem to agree as the results of the poll indicate over 80% approval for Brind'Amour to keep wearing the "C". But the Canes need "number 17" to bounce back in a big way this season.
Staal a "10" with The Hockey News
Our friends at The Hockey News continue to give Eric Staal props as John Grigg recently placed him among the "Top 10" Canadian hockey players. Staal should have no trouble locking up a spot on the Olympic team, but as for Cam Ward? That is a horse of a different color.

Brind'Amour and Staal
I thought the comments from Rod on when Staal would get the C were interesting.
“I haven’t given any thought to that,” Brind’Amour said. "Obviously [Staal] is going to be the captain whenever they want him to be. Whether you necessarily want to push that on him now or later, I don’t know.
“He’s doing pretty well right now on his own. He’s going to probably have a little bit more pressure on him this year with the huge deal [contract extension]. … You don’t necessarily need to add that extra on him.”
1st – there seems to be no doubt it will be Staal. (JR’s comments reiterated that)
2nd – Brind’Amour is pointing out the Staal does feel the pressure and doesn’t need more (the recognition as a THN Top-10 Canadian in the NHL is a nice pat-on-the-back )
3rd – Just confirmed the current roster DOB’s. Staal is still the youngest player of the top 20 we expect to dress this season. (#2 – Cam Ward).
Not that they’re super young by NHL standards, but they have both been the poster-boys for the franchise for the last 3 years – some highs and lows. While the skill and smarts and discipline are there for both, it’s not an easy thing to have the maturity required to take on the locker-room leadership with the great crew of character players we are lucky to have here. For that role, the competition is pretty stiff (both Walker and Yelle have worn a C for starters).
I agree with Rod. One step at a time for Staal. And I appreciate Rod’s enthusiasm and commitment to leading the guys (it is called Camp Brindy). And I really hope we see a great career wrap-up for him the next year or so. He sure works hard enough to deserve that.

Its pretty simple for me.......
I just want to know if that knee is better or the same. If it is better, he is the captain. If it is not right, bring up one of the young guys right now. Nothing personal its the N friggin H L……….. Perform or be replaced. Rod is a leader and as such, if it is over, he needs to step aside sooner rather than later because it is what is good for the team. If he was hurt most of last year and he is back to 100 percent, let him play another five years as long as he can compete. Really no grey area here. We cannot afford another first half performance like last year. Just for the record, I think he will be right this year. It should be clear on the first shift of the first preseason game. Go Rod.
Again I have to bring up Ronnie.
Where was this thunder when Ronnie was finishing his career here? I think as long as Roddie is on of the top 12 options at the forward position (I.E. earns roster spot) I think he holds on to the :C". Ronnie was a great example that stats and leadership are two different things.
by CarolinaCanes on Aug 30, 2009 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Remember he was called Ronnie FRANCHISE? Stats are just numbers, if he still can “bring it” then let him keep the “C”…..Staal will be ready when the time comes, just like Rod was……..
I wasn’t trying to take anything away from Ronnie. I just think that you can make a case for Rod being as big anasset to the team at the same stage of their career. I realize that what Ron did for the franchise but also remember that this team has a cup because of Rod. Two game seven victories in 06 (the most meaningful series) where won under his watch. They should be mentioned in the same breath when talking about CAROLINA HURRICANES history.
just my two cents.

Speaking of stats...
I was just checking some stats myself, as a result of what “Spector” wrote in his “Roster
problems in the eastern conference” article. (he has no clue about the Canes, will explain
later)
I couldn’t believe Staal was just 24! and Ward only 25! The Canes sure have a long, and
bright FUTURE, eh? However, rushing Staal into the “C” seems to be unnecessary, as it
seems likely, barring injury, that Brindy will be here for awhile. I got a kick about Corvo’s
comment about Brindy and Larose- “Roddie and Rosie are insane” (concerning there 0ff-
season workouts).
Now back to Spector and his article in “The Hockey News”. among other things he said
Brindy and WHITNEY were showing their age! I responded w/comment letting him
know that Whitney led the Canes with 77 pts in 82 games last yr! What a TOOL!
Jeezuz, you people and this baby step shit,. Staal better be ready and he goes now, I’m not sure what it’s like to make multi millions of dollars, but any pressure that kid feels is paltry compared to what io have been through for a monster pile less. A check that big eases many a pain and he better not be sitting there needing a xanax, he better be a hungry piranha waiting for the first opportunity to take it. Waiting and doing nothing is for losers and pussy’s. Winners want the puck and the letter, stress be damned.

I was just waiting for you to show up and say that. (thanks for making it readable). Slap us around with the wet noodle…
I do think if there is a gap in Staal’s package, it’s the “hungry piranha” fighting for every inch of ice. Maybe why he “needs” Cole? IMHO, that’s the biggest difference between him and Ovie, for example. Staal is pretty mild (even compared to bro Jordan). But I’m sure that’s something that we Caniacs would debate.

I think Gleason suffers from nice guy sybdrom, too.
“Wet Noodle Wielding” Has a ring to it!!
I just think Staal was at his best when Rod went down the first time. There was a little desperation in his game, but his game picked up big time at that point. The bugger is, it has to come from Staal. The coaches can’t beat it into him or force him, he has to want it. I just don’t see it.
I think what I’d like to see wopuld be Rod getting pushed by Staal and both have wicked great years because they pushed eachother. Some good friendly competition. It would do them both good.
That was a yes I hope od does good, btw. I have serious doubts, but it sure would be sweet for this team to be hitting on all cylinders!!
A- Wet Noodle Wielder
re-visiting the hungry piranha
As far as Staal being perhaps “too much of a gentleman”, I guess the other extreme is Dani Heatley. For the most successful team, I’d take Staal in the locker room every time. Ronnie F is a great mentor for him. All the ingredients are there – it’ll work itself out.
Maybe he’d rather have a Lady Bing (and a ring) than a Hart…?

Fair point, Stevie Y was/is one of my favorites on and off the ice. while I like the skill players alot, i think there is a call and a need for the likes of the assholes, Pronger, Heatley, LaRoque, Bertuzzi, etc. Since everyone knows I like Detroit and they are all pretty well known, a team of Datyuk’s would score alot, but would get beat up and eventually be unsuccessful. Enter some grit like Kronwall and you get a good balance. You mentioned Ovie earlier, another good example. If he were a pussy like crosby the craps would be doomed. Going with crosby you got malkin the goon etc.
That’s where I think we have gone astray a little. We are not pushing Staal to be all that he can be. I do not follow this baby step and give them a chance crap. Throw them into the fire and they fish or cut bait. It’s big money pro sports. while I would agree that the team chemistry is one of more passivity and it is a strength, we have to get some body’s into the boards every night. Gleason I hope will finally let his nuts drop and his gloves. Walker isn’t built for it, but he has the right idea. sutter was in a couple skirmishes. That’s the fight we need. I don’t expect Staal to drop the mits and go toe to toe with Chara, but I would expect LaRose to go low and Walker goes high the sob if he takes liberty’s.
Caveat I watched Boston alot last year, nobody played Chara like LaRose, it was art watching Rosie slash the shit out of his achilles, shove him at face offs and taunt him on every shift they were out there. That’s the grit we need to instill and have on the ice.
So while some of the players have it, like Sutter and LaRose, it’s not the ones we need. I mean Rosie and Sutter probably weigh less than Chara together holding grocery’s.
Then the slow degredation of our speed. One due to age and the other just in the players. williams was a loss, Yelle is a net loss on speed. We have very little in terms of breakaway speed. Our hands guys are good in Sammi, and Whitney, etc., but streaking speed is lacking. with Joni in the back we have the opportunity for a skilled pass to a streaking player. We just don’t have the guy that has the exper. of Rod and Yelle that can skate like Boychuck. I would say Cullen and Rosie will be our best weapon on that and I gotta say they are undergunned with most of the D pairings they will face. They are second/third line guys and will probably be facing the number 1 D pairings consistantly.
With any luck Rod and Yelle will own the FO circle, with Staal and Cullen getting better at it.. The D is looking pretty nice so we should be able to control the puck with consistancy. the trouble has been and appears to still be what happens next. Our guys pass it around and don’t shoot near enough. Our guys aren’t fast enough to get behind the D and take the shot. The PP has been just awful and it doesn’t look like it’s any better.
I see some holes i think should of been addressed. A competant B/U goalie for instance, how about Kolzig? I bet he’s real friggin’ cheap about now. Anyway, I think there is going to be some good hockey this year and we will field a good squad. I think some of the seemingly traditional weak spots are still there.
just an enforcer at the blue line would be a great help. Make everybody slow down and look before they go hell bent in on Cam. That slight break of rythm could be the diff. in many games. The 1 goal games are all we need to improve on to be a scary threat. Right now we aren’t scary except we can roll 4 lines every night. Alot of others can’t do that. Maybe that will be enough.
A-WNW
Another example too close to home is Tampa. With Tanquay now they just went from controllable to scary. The East has improved this off season alot and I think the SE in particular. Last couple years it was us and the craps. This year the SE is gonna be a hard fought battle. I think whoever comes out on top in the SE could easily be the Conf. champs, too. That means the big dance. I’d be hard pressed to pick a sure favorite for winning the SE. Whomever it is will be well suited to go after Pitt, Boston, etc. Let’s hope for no injury, players bouncing back and great chemistry. Much less and it’s gonna be another long year on the nerves, but a short year in games played.
A
So while some of the players have it, like Sutter and LaRose, it’s not the ones we need.
I’ve said time and time again that if we could put Rosey’s heart and passion in Staal’s body, that player would be unstoppable.
Luv those Paragraphs!!!

I want everyone on the team to have a great season, but I want Rod to have a great season just a little bit more. I think he’ll be ready to prove all those who doubted him wrong.
I agree...........
I think we all hope for the best. It is hard not having any hard information about the status of the knee. I am sure if there was great concern about it, the Canes would be making arrangments to cover for him…………..like Stephan Yelle……..oops. Jee, I hope I am wrong but…..The signs are there. If he has bone to bone, it will likely not get better. He may have a lot to prove but sometimes, the body simply cannot do what the mind wants to do. As a 40 year old, I can tell you, recovery is a whole lot harder than at 25. I hope I am wrong.
I hope Brindy didn't run in the Friesen Race today...Anyone know if he did?
I think Brindy will be be a definite strong 3rd line Center and hopefully will advance to 2nd line this season, Nothing will disappoint me more than to see the ‘C’ taken from Brindy before he retires. I see him shining this season and going out the end of next season (2011) with retirement. Hopefully he will be in the coaching organization along side Wesley working with the young forwards.
I’m more concerned about a young healthy Staal playing like a 1st line franchise
6 million dollar player without hearing all the excuses that he can’t shine because he has to play winger, defense and center because the other Canes’ players aren’t doing their part to make him shine (many Staal lovers excuses)…IMO.
Kaberle…. I’m happy he’s not on the roster and taking up a spot , but even happier to see him playing hockey in his home country. I wish him well and hope this career move will be good for him and his family. I wish him the best!
C
I like Staal and he's a great player...just don't think he set the moon over the RBC.
I’m a huge Brindy fan, but was ready for him to be put on the 3rd and 4th line last season when he was playing miserably. I can separate myself from the ‘love’ of the player when I see that it’s hurting the team. Team first, player 2nd. I just get tired of when Staal is good, he’s a God, when he sucks, it’s the other players around him that caused him to suck or his "shoulder is injured, but he suffers for the team and keeps playing with it (of course it has nothing to do with the fact it would halt his record of most played games by a Cane player)…it’s never his fault. Is Staal our #1 center?…Yes, but he’s not the Cane’s Gretsky. Of course I hope he makes me eat my words!
C
No – Brindy did not run (I think it was also in the article Chip A wrote). I was checking out LTD’s Flickr site and she has dozens of excellent photos (as usual). You can see who’s back in town and if their shirts are sweaty toward the end, they didn’t run (this includes, Staal, CWard, Whitney, Mo, Forslund and several others. Rosey, Walker, Wallin, and Conboy did. I don’t remember the rest).
Starting line:

Here is Rosey (wet) and Staal (dry) – my favorite shot of the bunch:

Here’s Tripp – struggling a bit?:

Tripp's jaws look a bit puffy, kinda like Stormy.
BTW is it true that Tripp is Karmonas’s wife (Danielle) brother or cousin? I read it on a blog somewhere of that he was one or the other. I know they both grew up in the same town in Michigan. Just curious.
Glad to hear that Brindy didn’t jinx himself again this year and it’s good to hear that most of the players are back in town. Smells like hockey!

LTD...Your pic site rocks.
I finally went to your site and OMG…WOW. The only word I can describe it is AWESOME!!! It’s like getting lost in Caneville.
Thanks for having the site. I suck when it comes to photography, so this is a treat for me and my family.

Don’t stress – whatever you do! You love photography (a very noble art) and if hockey players in Raleigh are your “subject” then that’s a good match – and the blog gives you the appreciation you deserve. Ansel Adams was “obsessed” with Yosemite and no one seems to mind that one bit. Life’s too short to doubt the value of doing something you love.
However, I was thinking today we should start a caption contest for that one between Staal and Rosey. (still trying to kill time til Camp). I’m curious what mischievous tale Rosey just told Staal & that Eric isn’t sure he heard right. Maybe: "Did you hear Aaron Ward’s back on the team?
