Canes Give up on Bobby Hughes - Trade Forward to Islanders for Rob Hennigar

The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they have traded forward Bobby Hughes to the New York Islanders for center Rob Hennigar.  Hughes was a fourth round draft pick of the Canes back in 2006.  After a great junior career at Kingston where he scored 75 goals and had 171 points in his last two seasons, the forward suffered from one set back after another in Albany.

Henniger is a 26 year old prospect who split time last season between the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL and the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL.

The franchise had high hopes for Hughes at one time, but apparently has decided to move on.  The trade is contingent upon the forward passing a physical before Thursday at 3PM.

Do we really need another center????I mean I know it was one center for another but whats the point?

The hope probably is that Hennigar will be more durable than Hughes has been. Hughes has missed two/thirds of the last two seasons with injuries.

Rob Hennigar will probably be a career minor leaguer. Might develop into a guy that can come up for stints due to injury. Someone has to play in Albany. When we bring up the youngsters in a year or two it will leave a hole down the middle there, so while we have NHL caliber depth, we still have to field a team at the A level. IMHO this is what this move was about.

This guy might have some upside. Who knows at this point in time. Nobody has rushed his development which is a good thing. 4 years in college is always nice and had a good stint in the ECHL last year. Should compete for a spot in Albany I would assume. Another thing to take into consideration is the possibility that the canes will have Zach B and/or Zac D moving to Sutter’s wing. I know we have three big time prospect down the middle that should all be in Albany next year, but I would assume we make one line out of the three. If all three make the roster after this year, I doubt they will all center different lines. Anyway here is a link to check out:

Hughes never got untracked after his strange back/neck issues. Competition was going to be tight in Albany … it’s probably the best for everyone involved.

sadness ensues. I had hoped Hughes would get back to form. Let’s hope Borer is getting healthy.

Hughes

Did his injury come from the Albany bus accident?

Still not a crook!

by TrickyD26 on Aug 31, 2009 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

He was on the bus but not hospitalized. His injury problems started the previous year.

A fourth-round pick by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, Hughes, 21, played only 53 games for Albany over the past two seasons, scoring 23 points (10g, 13a). He came back from a serious neck/back injury that ended his rookie season, but dealt with a concussion and had sports hernia surgery in 2008-09
