Forward Patrick Eaves, who Carolina traded to Boston in the deal to get defenseman Aaron Ward, was signed by the Detroit Red Wings today. Eaves was bought out by Boston following the deal in a cap-savings move, making him a free agent.

Can only mean one thing

Eaves really is a great hockey player. But seriously, how can Eaves find playing time with a team like Detroit but not with the Hurricanes?

by hockeythoughts on Aug 4, 2009 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

Jiri Hudler bolting to the KHL open a big door for him. The Wings aren’t as deep as before thx to all the big contracts.

by Cory Lavalette on Aug 4, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm...

Wouldn’t be surprised to see him go 15-15 this year with about a +10 the way they put players in a position to succeed.

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

by MichaelProcton on Aug 4, 2009 4:13 PM EDT reply actions

Yea, could be the comeback player of the year with Detroit. He’ll become the formidable Patrick Eaves in Detroit.

by hockeythoughts on Aug 4, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t Dan Cleary find his game in Detroit?

by hockeythoughts on Aug 4, 2009 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL that same comparison was drawn by the Detroit Free Press:

Wings sign Patrick Eaves, compare him to Cleary

Will be interesting to see how much he signed for. That’s a good spot for him.

When a bought-out player signs with another team...

do they still receive the buy-out money on top of their new contract?

Still not a crook!

by TrickyD26 on Aug 4, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, the Bruins still owe him the buyout regardless. We’ll be in the same situation with Frank Kaberle if he lands elsewhere.

by Jamie Kellner on Aug 4, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Glad to hear it. Hope it works out for him.

I guess we can say things turned out pretty well for him.

by outlander_caniac on Aug 4, 2009 4:37 PM EDT reply actions

Best of luck to him! I hope things work out well in Detroit!

by caniacgirl on Aug 4, 2009 4:42 PM EDT reply actions

I agree if you meant: Best of luck to him! I hope things work out well FOR HIM in Detroit! My second favorite team will always be who ever is playing the wings. That series still hurts something bad.

by CarolinaCanes on Aug 4, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re right-that was probably a better way of putting it; although for things to work out well for him, he’ll probably want the team to do well too. ;) Does that mean you cheered for the Pens during the SCF this year? If that’s not the definition of a rock and a hard place I don’t know what is.

by caniacgirl on Aug 4, 2009 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

to be honest: Yes. I guess for three main reasons 1) it was against Detroit 2) our series with the pens did not go far enough to develop that hatred (I.E. NJ,MTL,BOS,BUF) it was almost like TOR in 2002. I really didn’t hate them (although there where a couple players). But I was bitter. and most importantly 3) it was against Detroit.

by CarolinaCanes on Aug 4, 2009 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s so funny-I came out of the playoffs hating certain players on NJ and BOS, but I hated the whole Pittsburgh team.

by caniacgirl on Aug 4, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m sure you disliked PIT before the playoffs started. I really didnt mind em (especially beings two people on our coaching staff have fond memories of the place, and rightfully so)

NJ is a team that I wouldnt mind seeing go away. Actually if we could some how turn Duke in to a bomb and blow up the Devils hmm…. Nevermind.

by CarolinaCanes on Aug 5, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually Pitt was my second team in the East, now I don’t know if that’s still the case.

by caniacgirl on Aug 5, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey – maybe next we’ll hear they traded Eaves to the Canes get rights to sign Babchuk…(or maybe, like us, they have some bad feelings about RFA’s who choose to sign in the KHL)

I did not even think of that until you said it. But now i think it is the front-runner on speculating what JR will do next. Its gonna happen. Bubba cue up the typin machine.

Smart move by Eaves

There is plenty of scoring in Detroit and plenty of talent, although like Cory said, not as deep as in seasons past. This is a very smart move by Eaves. It’s a one year deal per TSN (still no financial terms) and it’s a great opportunity to convince teams that he is the 20 guy who scored 20 goals in 50+ games and over the shoulder injury and not the guy who was on a poor Ottawa team and had troubles finding consistency in Carolina. Also, while it pains me to say this, it doesn’t hurt to be playing for an organization that’s so well run.

by C-Leaguer on Aug 4, 2009 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

that is what I wondering. I would have like to have Eaves back anywhere 1mil or under. I wasnt ready to give up on him yet. Great move by detroit and probably a move by Eaves that will save his career. imo

by CarolinaCanes on Aug 4, 2009 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree under a mil and I really like his game for the role he plays. While we know his potential we may over look what he does for the role he was given. He brought some grit and hustled….especially during the last quarter of the season when everyone came together. For 500K thats an excellent 4th/3rd liner, with 20 goal potential.

Y’think JR can convince Detroit to trade him back to us for Conboy??? And we’ll give them the rights to Babchuk too.

He convinced Tampa to give him Jokinen for Melichar and Brookbank so who knows. Although Detroit may be more hesitant to give up more talent than they are getting in return. But for that amount I would certainly consider it.

by caniacgirl on Aug 5, 2009 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Bargaining chip for something better? Although I’m not sure what Detroit needs to be better. You’re probably right though; especially if they have him in mind to fill Hudler’s spot which seems a bit of a stretch based on numbers. But we’ll see.

by caniacgirl on Aug 5, 2009 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Leino will fill Hudler’s spot, Eaves will move into Leino’s spot.

by Cory Lavalette on Aug 5, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Ahh that makes much more sense.

by caniacgirl on Aug 5, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I really don’t think this would happen. But with the “stunts” JR has pulled the last 12 mos with the revolving door on the roster, it seemed appropriate to put it out there.

Total BS

Why not go down to HELL and Play for the Devil, I hope he sucks more than ever now !!

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Aug 5, 2009 2:38 PM EDT reply actions

I think HPF is talking about the team of choice. Other than NJ, Detroit is the last place I want to see a player sign (unless its Melichar or briere)

by CarolinaCanes on Aug 5, 2009 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Brier! haha. awesome

I understood what Holty was saying… but he or she also was one ripping Eaves a new one and saying we should rid ourselves of him. I am glad he found a team and wont be stuck trying to look for work in Russia or Sweden, personally.

The Devils and Wings are easy to hate… I get that. But if the player is not considered that good, or a fan favorite anyways- why would anyone really care? Especially if its a player we were so anxious to dump?
