"Junior" Canes to play for Championship at Traverse City - Update
The prospects of the Carolina Hurricanes lost to Atlanta, 7-3, in their third game of the Traverse City Tournament yesterday afternoon, but had already earned a spot in the tournament's championship game to be played tonight at 6:30. The Canes will bring their 2-1 record into the final contest against Minnesota, who beat Columbus but lost in shootouts to Dallas and St. Louis.
According to Pointstreak, the Canes fell behind early again 2-0, attempted to make comeback, but fell apart in the third period. Alain Valiquette took the loss after replacing Mike Murphy in the third period. The backup was thrown into a hornet's nest and allowed 4 goals on 13 shots. The Thrashers added an empty netter as they had a total of five tallies in the final period.
Kyle Hanlin has a nice review of the game at CH.com.

Sutter
What are the chances he makes the squad this year? I was under the impression the big club lineup was set, but could all of this praise for Sutter change things? Even if not, we would definately have the best injury fill-in in the league!
Still not a crook!
Very slim.
Rutherford admitted as much in one of these articles. But he said he was proud of Sutter’s attitude about it.

Not surprised Sutter is the most NHL ready of all of them. The experience he gained last season puts him head and shoulders above anyone else that is there. Plus as Tripp would say, “he’s the son of a coach so he approaches the game differently” or something like that. I would love to see him in Raleigh full time next season, but am not putting money on it, especially with the Yelle signing.
I think JR has something up his sleeve this season. We seem to be loaded with enough talent that we can rotate five lines on offense and four on defense throughout the regular season. It may be that we have several people signed with the team as trade bait. Or it may be that we do rotate people in and out of the lineup this season with the hopes that when we get to the playoffs we will will have the deepest roster, and that we won’t run into the problem of being overpowered or tired like we looked in the ECF this year.
But we could also make a trade or two. How about Cullen and yelle to ATL for kovalchuk? Doesn’t make sense for the year, but all are going up for contracts in 2010. So if ATL is not ging to make the playoffs, they trade of ilya for a cup run then resign him. Atl also gets to try out more centers, a position they are weak in. I’m sure this is not going to happen specifically, but I don’t doubt that JR is stacking the deck for deadline deals.
I think JR has something up his sleeve this season.

Man – where’s Chuck Kaiton when you need him?!
I could see #11 (Boychuk) make some did-you-see-that moves to the net. Murphy is in goal for all the clips – most of the action seems to be in the Canes D-zone. And the fight (happened in the 1st, but at the end of this video) is not “inspiring” without crowd noise. Overall, really hard to tell what’s going on.

Looks like Reed is trying to show how he fits into the Canes new bigger, stronger, tougher mindset. Scoring and fighting-a good combo.
Correct me if I'm wrong -
Be sure to keep straight which: Reed or Reid. Elgin Reid is the try-out D-man from WVa in the fight who scored the GWG Sunday in the first game vs NYRangers. Harrison Reed is the Forward we’ve had under contract a while (6 mos?) who has also had some points in the tourney.

Not time to panic. His knee will be scoped, out two weeks. We have 3 weeks b4 start of season, and he s/b back. If he’s not ready then, we do have good options to take his place
and that could be a good thing in the long run.
I’m curious why Valiquette replaced Murphy. Maybe rest him for tonight? Murph is obviously the #1 on that team.

Win or lose they were going to tonights game, my guess is to see what he could do. Man did he screw that chance up.
that’s what I thought at first, but if that was really the case why start Murph at all? That didn’ make any sense to me unless they thought Val was so bad they needed to play Murph for 2 periods to give the team a chance with Val in net. I think perhaps Murph was getting pelted so bad they wanted to save him for the finale :-)
Maybe with all the hype on Murphy they just forgot Val was there. Till he meekly tapped Coach Daniels on the shoulder. “Excuse me, coach, sir. Do you think maybe I could try and play one period? Please?”
Good character building experience (I went through half-dozen Mite games last fall as the goalie’s mom – almost all losses – nothing quite compares). Go back practice, and we’ll see you next year. Maybe.

So he could start on the 4th line for most of the teams in the league and we are going to use him as a substitute? It’s absurd keeping him and Boychuck down. The only thing JR has up his sleeve is his arm. Rod’s an anchor, Yelle while a steal is a waste of money and a number that one of the kids SHOULD be wearing. Meanwhile Cole is making more than both the kids combined and is nothing more than Staals pacifier. This team will be good, but those two kids would add a whole ‘nuther dimension. I hate to wish anything bad, but I hope Rod and Yelle both get mono and these kids get called up. Other than the faceoff circle the team would be better. Exper. is nice, but speed and skill are what is needed today. Old farts watching plays go by them like Rod did last year is worthless. Even if Rod gets back to where he was 2 years ago, i’d take Sutter over him and probably Boychuck., too.
Change the gaurd, change it now. Bring in the drive and hunger of the youth. Not to mention the speed factor alone will break open more plays than Rod has in the last 6 years.
Begin the dung storm…
A
If it wasn’t for your almost pathetic and entirely predictable (because you have said the same thing using the same words at least a dozen times before) statements, your tired rants might still have some validity as the proverbial Devil’s Advocate. But just because you continue to try to jam down our throats your own opinions without providing any sort of backup in terms of analysis, does not mean your opinion should be considered more than jaded and biased.
Brandon Sutter may well be ready for the NHL. But to say he should replace Brind’amour is ludicrous. Sutter scored 1 goal and had 6 assists in 50 games last year. Despite Rod’s abysmal season, he still had 16 goals and 35 assists. And I believe he will do far better this year centering the THIRD line, rather than spending half the season trying to return from a season-ending injury from the prior season on the second line.
Additionally, you seem to completely discount the value of winning faceoffs. I may be wrong but unless you win the faceoff, it makes it difficult to score because you don’t have the puck. I remember reading an analysis somewhere online that losing a faceoff in your own zone is like giving the other team what amounts to a 15-20 second powerplay as you scramble defensively.
So, the fact that Brind’amour wins 60% of his faceoffs means nothing to you. And Yelle wins 52% of his. And just because Sutter and Boychuk might be NHL-ready this year, NEITHER is likely to break into a top-6 position this year, which means they will get far more minutes playing in Albany this year and could potentially both be brought up next year with Bowman perhaps as a complete line ready to play knowing each other well. I do believe we have 7 contracts which expire next year and some of those players will need to be replaced from Albany.
Injuries will, of course, cause changes but excepting those and our need to fill those holes, the prospects, especially Boychuk since he is just out of juniors, would be better playing as much time as they can in Albany this year.

Never disounted fo’s and ev en caveated that. if that’s all you want out of acaptain and that kind of money you are a disgrace to the sport and blinded by some misplaced loyalty.
Keep “reading the internet” maybe you will get it one day…
A
Obviously you have no loyalty and are merely blinded by your hatred, biases, and prejudices against certain players. And even if we took your foolish advice, the players you would replace still have to be paid according to the terms of their contracts. Or do you plan to buy out the contracts of half the team to get what you want? You would be a great general manager for Al Davis or George Steinbrenner.
Additionally, the Yelle contract is only $50K above the league minimum, so you’re not going to save any money replacing him with one of our young prospects. You’ll just have that person only play maybe 8-9 minutes a game instead of around 20 minutes a game down in Albany. And that is true for all those young prospects.
In fact, your philosophy seems to be to just throw them out at the NHL-level and hope they survive. Don’t give them a year where they can play more minutes and hone the skills they will need at the next level. I guess Detroit and other successful franchises have been doing it wrong all these years.
And what I want from our captain is leadership and the ability to help his teammates. Scoring 25 goals and having 70 points as well as being nominated for another Selke would be nice though I doubt it will happen. Though if it did, I wonder whether you would actually eat crow or just hope no one remembered your hate-filled attack posts.
Regarding my “reading the internet”, when I get a chance I will forward you the analysis about faceoffs in the defensive zone. They also looked at neutral zone faceoffs, too, but not surprisingly, they didn’t have the same level of impact.
Have a good day and don’t let your sunny disposition go all to waste.

At some point...
You establish yourself as a top franchise (one that can regularly compete for Championships—something you so regularly bitch that we don’t), you don’t waste 6:00 TOI roster spots on kids who should be playing regularly and developing to save a few hundred grand here and there. What if those kids pull a Babchuk in the playoffs and cost us a goal? A game? A series? The Cup? What “other dimension,” precisely, have either Boychuk or Sutter proven they can provide? Is it their 6 combined points in 52 career games? Very impressive, too, the way you wish illness upon others. Keep it classy, Pal. The fact that you’re ready to dismiss our captain—a guy who scores nearly a point a game and is among the top defensive forwards in the league—for a pair of kids who have never proven anything at the NHL level, except that they provide neither of those things.

Fine line between genious and stupidity and loyalty and stupidity. Rod’s poor play over the last year and a half has cost points and probably games. This franchise has repeatedly walked the line of loyalty/stupidy. Case and point is Cole. Waste of money and a roster spot. Let Seids walk and Babs (though keeping him may have been distastful, too) go, but keep a languishing Cole and add Yelle. While there are other D men to take up the slack, the forward addition/retention seems desperate. Sorry if you don’t like it, but buying Cole so Staal get’s a reach around and getting Yelle so the failing Rod has back up is assinine. Crosses the line on both accounts to stupidity.
Hate? I hate that Wallin is still here. I hate that Seids isn’t. I hate it that Rods getting old. I hate it that Babs is a dick. I hate it that Sutter, Boychuck et al will not get a fair shot at earning a spot. Most of all, I hate Brussel Sprouts.
A
You are faulting Brind’amour for his poor play for the last year and a half? I will agree that the first part of last season was abysmal. But the latter part of the season, especially during our drive to make the playoffs, he played good. So that accounts for one year. And correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t he injured in the latter half of the prior season with the ACL year that ended that season. Yes, it’s hard to play well when you’re not playing at all, so I guess I have to give you that as well.
You list all of what you want and what you dislike. That seems to be a consensus recital from everyone from the entire offseason for the most part. But you also throw in Cole as a. “pacifier” for Staahl. Well who the hell else would you want there, someone who makes our best scorer suck? Everyone earlier was griping how we need another sniper to take the load off Staahl. Cole does that for him. We just need a playmaker on that line (Whitney) to make it as productive as it can be.
And I think it is a luxury we need to have Sutter and Boychuk in Albany this year, working together and improving their skills instead of mostly riding the bench here. The “kids” played well in the tournament against their peers, but the last thing anyone wants to see is Boychuk laid out on the ice from a Chris Pronger hit that he would have avoided with more ice time by playing a year in the AHL. Oh yeah, that was Sutter’s most memorable moment last year due to his lack of experience.
And you still haven’t explained why we should replace someone who had 51 points last year with someone who had only 7. Youth and speed do not always trump savvy experience. If it did, there wouldn’t be any over-30-year-old players still in the league.
by ncdavid on Sep 11, 2009 9:20 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Uggghhhh, the “Best scorer” had about a 2 week surge and then went back into the almost suck category. cole added nothing of note. If he did add to Staals numbers, for the money he earns staal needs to net 90+ and assist on another 120. Cole was a bad choice.
As for the 51, gee, compare the games played and how many did rod give up? Rod had the worst =/- in the league. don’t be a moron and fall for the ol’ lies, damn lies and statistics. Statisticly Rod had some numbers, but in truth he sucked. I’d pose the question to him as proof and I am very sure he would say his efforts were niot up to what he feels are needed.
As for the kids, rod didn’t do much better his rookie year. You gotta start somewhere.
The point none of you P6 haters are taking on is the speed and hunger issue. which has been a steady companion to all my poosts. Rod and Yelle in thier prime couldn’t skate with Boychuck and now aren’t even close to Sutter. Hmmmm, I recall this game is played on skates. next reflexes are again in the kids favor. so it all boils down to exper. While the old buzzards have it, I don’t think knowing the guy is going by you before it happens means much of shit. I’d rather a kid botch the play (like Rod did over and over last couple years) and then skate his ass of to recover. Let’s see… Rod knows it’s coming and still can’t do anything or catch the guy. while Sutter may not see it coming but has great reach and Boychuck can probably catch God.
You keep the loyalty blinders on and while I may eat crow if Rod and Yelle have standard declining carreer years, I can only imagine what a full year, even at 4-5 minutes a night, oh and they will get a bit of NHL level practice in, I’m sure you have no value on that, would do for these guys. Look at the tourny, the were far superior, noi where to go but up. So yea, let’s keep them down, so maybe we can foater a Babchuck attitude, give them a higher contract than we would this early or trade them away.
toatl blind stupidity. Jr has crewed the pooch. While he may come out smelling like a rose cause he has a diaper for Staals lack of enthusiasm and Rod’s total failing, i have no respect for any team that doesn’t give a fair, A FAIR shoit at tryouts. I think head to head in real tryouts Sutter and Boychuck make the squad and Yelle and Rod don’t.
While I know that will never happen in the real world, it is the reality of the situation.
A
I’m really starting to worry about you and this disconnect you have from reality. Your own blindness and apparent hypocrisy must be unraveling your grasp of what happened during last season.
I didn’t know Staahl scored 40 goals in a mere 2 weeks. That seems rather incredible. And how many 40-goal scorers were there last year? Given your derisiveness towards him, there must be hundreds of players who do it.
Regarding Cole’s lack of output, I guess having, what, 13 points in the last 16 games of the season after he rejoined the team is something any other player could and did do during that time. And didn’t he take a pay cut which has him earning less than, say, Scott Walker, whose excellent numbers last year certainly rate better than a fourth-line role given that salary. But, not a word from you about that. You save your vitriol for just a select few.
And I never said Rod Brind’amour had a good aseson last year. I said it was abysmal. But you ignore my criticisms of our captain because I don’t agree with you that we should throw him under the bus. Your own blinders don’t let you look beyond any number in his statistics other than his atrocious plus/minus. In fact, your whole argument for replacing him with Sutter is based on that statistic alone since you have no other supporting evidence.
As you correctly pointed out, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics. Brind’amour’s plus/minus was as high as -31, I think. Which means during the last few weeks/month of the season, when he was finally getting over his injuries, he was scoring more and playing better defensively. And while Sutter only played in 50 games and Brind’amour played in 80, even if you doubled Sutter’s points to 14, they’re still less than 30% of Rod’s 51 points.
As far as hating you, get a life. I only hate people I once cared about and I don’t give a damn about you personally. But I don’t like you constant derision of any person who doesn’t agree with you as an idiot or stupid. Such namecalling undercuts and valid arguments you might have and makes your points ignored just as you are.
by ncdavid on Sep 11, 2009 10:56 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
A two week surge?
He had 16 points in 19 games through January and February. I guess they played games every night with a few doubleheaders in there for good measure, huh?
Who gives a damn about “hunger?” Was Sutter not hungry last year? Because he sucked out loud for 50 games.
And yeah, you’re definitely right. There is no value to playing in the AHL whatsoever. Just ask Ward and Staal what a waste of time it was. They definitely should have been bottom-end NHL players, and they would have developed much more. Again, Sutter and Boychuck had the opportunity to play in the NHL last year, and they weren’t very good at the highest level.

Now we’re up on the shots 7-5. Feels like a momentum shift….(trying to find something exciting in a box score)

you gotta go to Norfolk so you tell him about how awesom it was to watch him get a shortie on the boxscore feed in September.

AND – it was one of those pre-intermission lockerroom mood-killing last minute goals. We could use more of those in Raleigh (we usually seem to be on the receiving end).

I just had an image of a puck floating through the air, behind Ward and into the net flash through my mind.

Here's a little more description of two of the biggest plays of the night
Zach Boychuk out-skates Minnesota’s defense and scores unassisted at 7:01 of the second period! Beautiful play and amazing finish… that was somethin’. Unassisted, since he’s the guy that stole the puck.
Brandon Sutter scores shorthanded with 43.5 seconds remaining in the second period! Wrist shot from 25 feet that found its way under Kuemper’s right shoulder and over the blocker! Heck of a play! Shots: Wild 19, Canes 14 at the time of the goal (and the end of the second period, for that matter). Canes lead 3-1!
WHere’d you find this CG? and is there more??

Awesome blog entry from young Sutter
I like how he describes how to score a shortie:
I was able to notch a goal tonight too. I just kind of saw a chance to jump (while shorthanded). Our defender blocked the shot and the puck came lose and a couple of the guys pinched in and I just kind of chipped it by him and went down. One guy drove the net and I just tried to get a shot and pick a corner and it went in.
Sure – happens all the time…
