Joni Pitkanen to have Knee Scoped
Chip Alexander from Canes Now is reporting that Hurricanes defenseman, Joni Pitkanen is having knee trouble and will have minor surgery. He is expected to miss a couple of weeks. (Training camp). Pitkanen led all Canes skaters in average ice time last season.
This is not a good way to start training camp, but it opens the door for youngsters Bryan Rodney, Jamie McBain, Brett Carson, or Jay Harrison.

I mentioned this in the last post, but do you think this will affect the Babchuck situation? We have plenty of young blueliners, but I believe most aren’t offensive threats.
We already are short of guys who can play the point on the PP, and if this injury lingers we will be left with only Corvo and Cullen.
Still not a crook!
Seems like the ship has sailed with Babchuk, but who knows? JR might not be happy with what teams are offering for him.

I was already concerned about who was going to play the point on the PP before the injury, now if Joni misses any serious time it could become a major weakness.
Still not a crook!
Assuming he doesn’t get behind on schedule on coming back from this injury, I don’t think the Canes have an awful lot to worry about.

Anything with a knee always makes me nervous as well, but I don’t think it is time to panic.
Also, if Babchuck wanted too much money before, how much do you think hed ask for now that Joni is down? I don’t see that as an option at all. Like Bubba said, that ship has sailed.
Anything with a knee always makes me nervous
I definitely agree. So I just did a little internet research on the meniscus tear (Pits) compared to the much more dreaded ACL injury (Rod and Williams)
Big difference it seems with very different prognosis. Mostly I’m looking for information to keep me from panicking in the void. Torn cartilege is way better (less threatening) than the ACL type problems that have hurt us so badly.
Layman’s interpretation (and surely enough medical folks here who can explain this with more insight than I):
Cartilege (which includes the meniscus) is cushioning so it’s primarily about pain, fluid motion, and preventing arthritis. Ligaments (any of 4 in the knee) are about speedy movement, strength and supporting weight – and are huge in athletes.

oh yeah. Huge difference in those two. But I feel ya – any injury regarding the knee is always seen as scary and often the immediate reaction is one of major concern. Consider cartilage a ligament’s bulletproof vest. In this case the cartilage stopped the bullet and saved any major injury, but it needs to be repaired. Nothing to really worry about and he likely won’t need any sort of crazy rehab for it either.
TSN is saying Pitkanen will be out 2-4 weeks. That sounds about right. If anything maybe he’ll miss the first few games of the season, but I doubt it. A friend of mine tore his meniscus in a basketball game and was back to his usual, clumsy self by the end of the month.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
Yeah, pretty much what I was thinking about the time missed. A bigger worry is that even if he misses 1-4 games of the reg season, he still has to get back into the swing of things. in theory he will be a little behind the people who had training camp and what not to get into game shape. At least he doesn’t have to come back in January or something.
/crosses fingers
It's also the same injury he had surgery on last year.

No.
And it’s as much a money situation as anything at this point. Now if Seids was willing to take a very cheap one-year deal since seem to be no deals forthcoming, that could be a different matter.

My guess is this boosts the chances of Rodney making the team, or at least getting some action early in the season.
Rodney would have to be the frontrunner, I’d think.

They certainly seemed to imply it when he was up last year.

Rodney and McBain have offensive upside and experience running the point on the PP
I wonder if Joni injured his knee during Camp Brindy? He looked fine to the other day at practice. Although, I was busy chasing my 18 month old daughter around, so I was that tuned in to practice.

Canes website (TTS) has some background up
Here’s most of it:
According to Hurricanes’ Head Trainer and Strength and Conditoining Coach Pete Friesen, Pitkanen suffered the injury while doing leg presses in Finland over the summer. He attempted to skate through the discomfort at the RecZone earlier this week, but a later MRI showed a small tear.
Although the injury is similar to the torn meniscus Pitkanen underwent surgery to repair in October of last season, causing him to miss nine games, Friesen said that he still has no long-term concerns over the knee. It should be fine, it’s just not something you want to keep doing over and over again," said Friesen. “We expect a total recovery.
It should be relatively short-term here, which is a good sign,” said General Manager Jim Rutherford.

That could be one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time. Especially Joni’s head on Mike Green’s body. Fantastic job hockeymom.

ESPN Reports: "Status Alert:Seidenberg, an unsigned free agent, was spotted wearing a Hurricanes jersey while participating in an informal workout at the RecZone skating rink in Raleigh on Thursday, the Raleigh News and Observer reports. (Sep 4)"
Makes you want to go hmm. Sidenberg in a Canes jersey instead just any other jersey or shirt, Hmm.
Yea in the NHL, they always say the players who have knee scopes will be out only a few weeks, again HMMM.
I’m hoping and praying that Sidenberg being at the RecZone in a Canes jersey is a good sign that we might be trying to find a way to sign him with Pitkanen out. Of course if we do, someone (forward) will probably have to get traded or they might just sign Babchuck. Again, time will tell.

Do you think Seids would sign a 2-way deal for minimum? ;)

Hey – at this point, all bets are off. I liked the guy!
And with JR’s now infamous Strong Pimp Hand, it may well be that Seids-b%&$ch has learned a lesson thinkin he could make more money working another street and is ready to get back where he belongs……. ;-D

Yep. I think its the visual image of “dowdy man Jim Rutherford metamorphosised into blinged shades, a purple suit with the tricked-out low ride muscle car and the Canes players in their big wigs, micro-skirts and stilettos, begging him to take care of them” that just won’t let me go. How is that not funny!?

I wouldn’t put anyting into that. Seids problably has dozens of practice jerseys and these are informal workouts. And Seids has been skating with them for about 2 weeks.

ESPN just got on the bandwagon because somebody happened to see it in the wire reports.

This is a good example of why teams should not wait two weeks before the season starts before they start training camp. What other sport trains ( WITH THE TEAM ) only a few weeks before game1. I know they all workout and do some training on there own during the summer but not with the team. You can hide injuries when you’re thousands of miles away but not when the coaches are watching.
Really?
You think he was trying to “hide” something? Why would he not want to be ready and 100% going into the season?

Nothing Serious !!!
I think this is more of a cleanup measure for Joni’s knee. Plus him missing training camp and games that don’t even count isn’t the worst thing in the world.
Go Canes !!

2nd meniscus tear and 2nd knee scope in 1 year can become serious, very easily to a hockey player.
A little more to it than a clean up job for a hockey player. It’s not like he’s going back to a desk job in 2 weeks. Yes, we need to be worried or at least prepared for the worse scenario.
I’m surprised with the NHL rules that they even disclosed all the info they did about it. I wonder which opposing player will be the first to take a jab at his knee this season.
C
I'm with you.
Arthros really aren’t that big a deal.

I’ve had torn cartiledge in both knees. Arthoscopic surgery repairs the knees to allow you a quick return to your athletic endeavors. Though of course you may have added problems later in life.
