Brief Update - Camp Schedule Change for 9/16
The Carolina Hurricanes recently notified us that the training camp schedule for tomorrow has changed. Group B will hit the ice at 8AM while Group A will skate at 10AM. Be prepared for changes like this almost every day as the coaching staff will be making day to day decisions and updates.
After the first session this morning Paul Maurice was asked about the lineups for the upcoming preseason games. The coach responded that he would have a "mixed" lineup with some vets and some prospects for the first two games. There were not enough total players to leave the vets out of the lineup completely. But expect to see most of the regulars for the last two games as they try to prepare for opening night.

I’m guessing will see Boychuk, Sutter, Murphy, Kennedy, Carson, in the preaseason games to bad it’s not on tv. Will there be audio for the preseason games? Chuck K.?
Will any of the prospects be “sent home” , whether to Albany or elsewhere, prior to Oct 2nd – ie is there a winnowing process we will see?

While I’m in “question” mode – is Zach Boychuk related to the B’s young D-man prospect Johnny Boychuk, who is 25? They’re both from Alberta…
I’ve kinda assumed it’s “no” with the way brother-rivalry is always hyped by the NHL media, but I’ve been wrong plenty before.

They're not.
Zach’s from Calgary. Johnny’s from Edmonton. They are cousins.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

Ah, yes.
I thought the question was whether they were brothers or not. Misread, sorry.

Fair enough.
I certainly wasn’t upset.

Thank you
Now we know….(seems like the B’s fans thought Johnny B was ready for a regular position in the NHL).
And with the same last name, it sounds like their fathers were brothers, so they have the same paternal Grandparents, and so yes they are related, by most definitions of the word.

Sutter
I just got my Sutter jersey today, I would like to have him sign it. What is the best time to catch him ?
The training camp “rules” for the public suggest the North entrance – not allowed inside the RBC.

Meet your 'Canes prospects on Youtube
The Albany River Rats website has been covering the be-jeezus out of camp. Here’s a Youtube video of Q&A with Murphy, Sutter, Boychuk, Kennedy, McBain and Terry.

Nice get girlfriend!! Gonna hop on the ol’ soap again. Sutter is there. he needs no AHL nothing, he needs and deserves NHL time. His on ice mojo has shown it and this little tid bit shows his off ice ice has too. he’s there, he needs to play. Boychuck on the other hand has the on ice and attitude, but doesn’t come across as savvy. I would say screw press savvy if his on ice work is juicy and it is. I swear Sutters head is 3 pounds heavier, these kids are ready, willing and able. For the love of Mike give them a fair shot. Not to mention several other p[layers.
Expletive laced tirade…….properly indented…
Anyway, I am just impressed every time I see these kids. I’m tickled shitless Rod can do pull ups. I hope he can earn by deeds a spot over these kids rather than get a gift of moss on a rock spot on the roster. I honestly don’t think or Yelle could earn a spot by deeds over these kids with out the “exper.” caveat.
A
So you’re all for giving “the kids” a. Fair shot—which I believe is happening—but for throwing anyone else under the bus you don’t like so they are GIVEN a spot on the team they haven’t yet earned. With a mentality like that, we might get back to the Stanley Cup Finals, in 2020.
And while I like Sutter, I will say it again, replacing Brind’amour with him this year is ludicrous. Sutter had 7 points last year in 50 games. Despite a season where he fought injuries and did not play up to expectations, Brind’amour still had 51 points in 80 games. Sutter’s year-long tryout last year showed he needs time to improve his game.
And while Boychuk is certainly great against his peers, you are jumping him straight from the juniors to the NHL, which is what happened with Sutter last year. And I still say Sutter’s most memorable moment last season was getting laid out by Doug Waite (sp.). I don’t want to see the same thing happen with Boychuk as he speeds down the ice and gets pummeled by Chris Pronger because he doesn’t have enough experience and the right kind of experience yet. And 6-8 minutes on the ice every night is not likely to give it to him this season.
And yet again, you are ignoring contractual realities. Who are you going buy out of their contracts so you have enough money to pay them at even NHL minimum salaries? And even then, we are already over out salary budget. Adding Boychuk and Sutter would push us up by another million dollars.

No way, david.
Letting them rot on the bench in fourth-line roles is absolutely the best thing for their development. You’re blind and a fool if you can’t see that they’d get lightyears better from being able to practice in the big leagues paired up with a fourth-line scrub.

Well then I’m a blind fool. chuckles But I saw Sutter dip his head at the worst possible moment and I’d really not like to see that again. Oh wait, I’m blind so I won’t see, right? grins
I fully expect to see Sutter and Boychuk and maybe even Murphy this year in the RBC. We will have injuries and we will need them. But like you, I think them getting 20 minutes of ice time per game will be better than 5-6 minutes teamed up with Conboy. Too bad we don’t still have Brookbank. He would have been the perfect fourth-line winger with them.

Sutter needs no AHL time?
You’re right. There is no way playing in the AHL could benefit either of them. Look at how it destroyed the confidence and spirit of Ward and Staal. Wait…it didn’t? Brind’Amour scored 50 points while skating hurt for much of the season. Sutter scored 7 in more than 50 games. Sorry, but count me unimpressed.

Blind stupidity…chuckles
yup great men in your own minds. So a “fair shot” and and you get “throwing under the bus”? You must be a democrat to get that idea out of fair. What’s the matter, you scared that old buzzards can’t make it in a fair head to head tryout? A fair tryout is the best way to get the right team together. Period, to say otherwise is foolish and worse. As for Sutter, he’s graduated to the NHL level. holding him back is remedial. 4 minutes of ice time and practicing with the team is like dog years compared to the AHL.
I count you unimpressive.
A
Once again, anyone who does not agree with you is blind and stupid. That’s a great way to validate your argument.
As far as validation of your argument, you speak in generalities about the young players you want on the team. You cite no evidence why they should be there except that they are “hungry”. You refute none of the real evidence that is used to show they shouldn’t be given spots on the team. You ignore any and all questions posed to you because the only answers to them would show you have personal biases backing your arguments instead of facts.

He NEEDS the "remedial" training.
He was simply not ready last year, but the NHL was the only non-junior option for him. Again, if it’s better for young players to barely play and get all the overwhelming experience of practicing at the NHL level, then point out some of the future superstars in the league who have been playing fourth-line roles and getting 6-8 minutes of TOI a night.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

Nick Dodge blog – he’s both a team NHL09 PS2 champion (paired with Justin Peters) and an avid reader. Who’d a thunk it?
He also mentions a little about Canes hockey and the nature of our forecheck system.
Today’s practice focused on the fore-check. Carolina uses a different fore-check than what we used in Albany last year. Their system features two men attacking in the offensive zone, whereas in Albany last season we only sent one man in on the attack. Sending two men requires the forwards to work hard at keeping their feet moving at all times, as they must supply back pressure on the puck when the opposing team eventually breaks out. It was a good skate today that required us to skate up and down the ice in a number of drills.
