Canes are not Streaming Video for Tomorrow's Game -Updated
It has been confirmed that the Carolina Hurricanes will not be streaming the video feed online for tomorrow night's preseason game against the Nashville Predators. The Canes were able to do this last season and it was a huge hit. You will still be able to listen to Chuck on 99.9 The Fan, if you can't make it to the arena.
The Canes have also released some lineup information. The first two lines, Eric Staal, Tuomo Ruutu, Erik Cole, Matt Cullen, Ray Whitney, and Chad LaRose will be playing tomorrow night for the home team. Joe Corvo, Tim Gleason, Brett Carson, Jay Harrison, and Aaron Ward will play on defense. Cam Ward will start in net. Tim Conboy will also be in the lineup.
The B Group participants will be announced later.
((UPDATE)) Here are the projected lines, according to Paul Branecky at CH.com.
Staal-Cole-Ruutu
Cullen-Whitney-LaRose
Blanchard-Dwyer-Ryan
Sutter-Boychuk-Conboy
Corvo-Gleason
Harrison-Ward
Rodney-Carson
Ward-Peters

A very positive and lengthy write-up from NHL.com last night on the Canes.
While I’m linking, these were interesting at 99.9 the fan in the last couple days:
Brind’Amour showing he is still valuable
Two Wards, one nickname for ’Canes
Everyone’s getting up to speed this week it seems – even the press. Two stories in the print edition of the N&O this morning even (haven’t seen that in months!).
Luke DeCock :These Canes exude quiet confidence
Chip A: Canes hope changes keep power play improving

yappy little 5-foot 6 guy
From Aaron Ward in Chip’s story
Canes defenseman Aaron Ward, who was with the Boston Bruins last season, said Carolina’s power play was based on good movement and spacing and difficult to stop, and he called it “ever evolving.” Staal and Ruutu are tough around the net, he said, but Whitney was a catalyst with his play-making ability and knowledge of the game.
“That yappy little 5-foot 6 guy over there is a smart hockey player,” Ward said of Whitney, generously listed at 5-10. "The reason they call him ‘The Wizard’ is because he can process the game pretty well, can come back to the bench and say, ‘OK, they’re keying on this guy’ or ’They’re cheating to this side, if you slot a guy into this hole … ’ "
“So shift to shift, you had to be aware that you had to adjust to what they were doing. If you change something in your system, they’re going to counter.”
And the NHL.com story says Joni is 6-6. That was AWard’s previous dance partner I think….
Maurice anticipates pairing Ward with the offensively-gifted Joni Pitkanen. The 6-foot-6 blueliner had 33 points in 71 games last season.
“We may look at playing him with Pitkanen, allowing Joni to do some of the fine offensive things that he does,” Maurice said. “He can be a real stabilizing influence.”
I like both these little errors :-). If the opposing teams go into a game expecting #25 to be 6-6, works for me.

Maurice said it was not a given that the younger players who moved from the B Group to the A Group in Wednesday’s practice would play in the preseason opener. Goaltenders Justin Peters and Mike Murphy will not play in preseason games, but Maurice isn’t ruling out anybody else from the B Group.
I thought it was interesting that Murphy and Peters won’t see preseason action. I guess with the shorter preseason schedule they want Ward and Leighton to get as much time in as possible.
Alternate (maybe)
Hiya everone,
Just to let you know, www.channelsurfing.net might have the game on their streaming stuff. They’ve been showing a few preseason games, but unfortunately don’t show tomorrow’s schedule. I’d bookmark it and check it tomorrow, but they’ve been showing a few games everday. It’s what I’ll be looking at tm.
Radio Pre/Post Game
Are there any pre or post game shows on 85am or 99.9fm for tomorrows game?
I just wanted to chime in and say the prices they are asking for tickets for preseason games are completely asinine.
Agree…. I get them free because of the season tickets…. but I think they should at least be half-price for the general public……

But they're in line with the rest of the league.
Nobody gives preseason discounts, and that’s not just the NHL.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

They do the same thing in Football, and all it’s done is made the league realize that the pre-season is not up to par. I think that this will change shortly, and I’m surprised it’s not changing this season given the economy. 10,000 people paying $40 is the same gate as 8,000 people paying $50, but the 10,000 crowd generates more parking revenue, more food and beverage revenue, and more merch revenue.
Kind of sorry that the highest per capita of phd’s and about the most tech savvy area on the planet can’t stream a friggin pre-season game. The friggin’ NFL goons can all but pre-empt the president for a pre-season game.
Anyway, i like the 3 and 4 lines alot. I think they will be rather good.
Just got Direct TV. Don’t lknow squat aboutit, but was pretty much the best option to get Center Ice. Any and all tips would be greatly appreciated for the other channels. Had to cut down a couple cords of wood to just get the one sat. in view. Don’t get the local sat. feed 9though not much going on in Franklin County VA.)
Also Bob, Cory anybody. How about a comprehensive list of enemy radio feeds and streams. I’ve had to dig them up in the past to get a game and it may be a useful list.
Anyway, i’m stoked, hope everyone is in good health and spirits. The season is upon us!!!!

FWIW -apparently, the Caps are not broadcasting video for tonight’s pre-season game either. They’re stuck with radio (or online I suppose.) Seems like they’d have plenty of money and tech-savvy to make it happen if they wanted to.

Ratings much?
I’m certain the NFL game draws about seven times as many viewers as the NHL. And that’s a regular-season hockey game compared to a preseason football game, too.

But what else is FoxSports showing tonight? Sure it costs money to broadcast a live event, but will they make up the difference in cost in higher ratings?
Baseball.
And yeah, I’d imagine their ratings are as high or higher.

I’m really excited about the forth line except for Conboy. I’m not really sure what they see in him, he’s not really impressed me. Again not sure about the Yelle signing makes no room for any young guys on the forth line.
I feel the same way about Conboy, but I thought maybe the whiz-kids needed an “enforcer” given how many fights there have been the pre-season games thus far. Conboy fits that role very well if a 4th line “on-the-bubble-Predator” feels the need to impress Nashville management with his toughness. We don’t need Boychuk or Sutter mixed up in that.

No we don’t, especially since we’ve all seen Sutter’s fighting skills; aggressive hugging isn’t going to keep him from getting hurt.
aggressive hugging? from you, that has an interesting connotation. ;)
BTW – have you been to LTD’s site today. She has some new Group B photos up. I thought of you and your #16 jersey.

He was our toughest player before the new arrivals.
And he’s on a one-way deal, so you might as well see what kind of situations he can be used/effective in.

NEW subject
Any one surprised/comcerned we haven’t heard anything more about extending Cam Ward’s contract before the season starts? When exactly did they finalize Staal’s contract last year
Let's go Canes!
Hakkaa Paalle!
I think it was in early September, so Ward’s extension is “late” in that regard. But I do know JR doesn’t like to do contract negotiations during the season, so maybe other things took priority and it’s too close to the start of the season for him to start.
I am a bit worried
I think another good season under Ward’s belt (and potentially another playoff run) could end up costing the Canes quite a bit more money. This may have been a desire by Ward to negotiate next season when/if the cap goes up as opposed to now when the cap is staying flat. Either way, Cam will be a restricted free agent after the upcoming season, so the Canes will have exclusive negotiating rights.
Well, not quite.
But a chance to match any offer, yes.

Staal's deal was finalized 9/20 last year, and agreed to a little earlier than that.

Interesting tidbit today being the 18th – I am a little surprised that JR hasn’t gotten that nailed down. He’s usually so predictable.
I mean, we ALL saw that Eaves/AWard trade coming from a mile away, yes?

Nick Dodge’s blog from today is pretty interesting.
This mention of Casey Borer and the Bus accident caught my eye.
I just found out that Casey Borer got into town today and I should get to see him later tonight. Casey has yet to be cleared to play due to the broken vertebrae he suffered in last season’s bus accident. I know it must be terribly frustrating for him to be kept off the ice more than six months after our very avoidable crash. Hopefully Casey will be back out on the ice in the coming months.
Has Casey had the surgery or is he in NC to have it done here (like @ Duke)?
Very Avoidable – not mincing words there.
Let's go Canes!
Hakkaa Paalle!
i was unaware he needed surgery…especially this long after the incident.
i know he was coming in for physical therapy about 2-3 times a week during the summer and he was making great improvements.
Did not see anything local about it. But this story from the Times Union has some info.

Regarding Cam Wards contract...
I would let the season play out before signing him. If his back problems reoccur you dont want to be left holding the bag on a very expensive gauraunteed contract. Plus, I don’t think on his side I would want to negotiate right now either, that Pittsburgh series was far from his finest hour. Playing hurt or not there were several soft goals in that series.
In summary, I see good reasons for both sides to stay away from the table for the time being.
I’m not exactly sure why this is all news…. for the years I’ve been following the team I have never known them to televise or stream any pre-season games…. I even remember the season before the lockout they only had about half of the pre-season games on the radio….
I’m excited to see some hockey……

Awesome!
Tomorrow we will skate into our first preseason game and the Hurricanes 09-10 conquest for the cup will finally begin with some live action! I am so excited!
Thanks again to Canes Country for all of the fantastic articles and posts; lets get this season started!

I never really cared about the preseason games and never used my free tickets to attend but with some of the prospects making noise I was considering attending tonight. I believe the ticket prices for preseason games were always the same as regular season prices which I dont understand. I would have thought the firm the organization hired to develop a plan to sell more tickets would have realized that preseason tickets should be half as much as regular season prices and they would still make just as much money and possibly expose more casual fans to the game.
Or possibly draw no more people at all and lose out on the revenue they DO get.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.
