Tuomo Ruutu trying out Face Shield
Carolina Hurricanes forward, Tuomo Ruutu is trying out a face shield this preseason. For those wondering, he does not have an injury, he is just experimenting with it a bit. We will try to find out more later after he makes a decision whether to keep it or not.
The Caniac Carnival was well attended this afternoon and fans seemed to have a good time. The team worked on the powerplay for most of the open practice, but goals seemed few and far between. Rod Brind'Amour made a couple of nice shots though.
Afterwards, the team announced the roster for the game against Atlanta on Monday night:
- Brind'Amour, Samsonov, Walker
- Yelle, Kostopoulos, Conboy
- Sutter, Boychuk, Bowman
- Ryan, Dwyer, Goertzen
- Alberts, Wallin
- Harrison, Carson
- Rodney, McBain
- Leighton, Peters
Paul Maurice said that he intends to give the Sutter line plenty of minutes. Michael Leighton will probably play the entire game in net.

In other news, Anton Babchuk has reportedly signed with Avangard Omsk. The Canes were trying to trade his rights, but apparently did not get enough in return for him.

What’s the word on video coverage of the game in Atlanta? I really want to see the BBS line.

Hmm
So, how do we get Forlsund in the fold as another writer here? And have you had a chance to speak to Ray about a twitter feed.

Thanks for the update on Ruuty’s shield, Bob! I suspected he was just trying it out but a little surprised that it’s a full face shield as opposed to the half-shields that most of the players wear. Glad to know there’s no injury reason he’s wearing it (thumbs up).
I love this tweet that came thru from Lets Go Canes, LTD:
LTD may just faint or her camera may blow up….Ruuuuuutu on deck with Forslund.

I’ll be checking your flckr site for images. Sorry I missed it – I had a baseball game with the middle son.

Yeah, my friends are a bunch of wisenheimers LOL. I guess it’s an honor to be tweeted about? And don’t be in a rush to look for pictures from today, I took a bunch but work intervenes so it will be a few days before I get anything posted to flickr. In the meantime I did post a few from Friday’s game including Ruuty in his full face shield so I guess that puts me back on topic.

The full shield will probably help block more punches after he hits/crushes opposing players! Probably not a bad idea for him :)

Babchuk??
I’ve got to say that JR dropped the ball (Puck?) on this one! I know it’s popular to think ill
of Babs, but the reality of the situation is HE could have really helped us this year and
likely many years to come! I don’t have any details on the negotiations, between JR
and Babs’ agent, so can’t say whether they were reasonable in their salary requests (don’t
like the word “demands” in this context) , or not. The way the Babs sit. was reported, it sounded like JR played “hardball” because he could, but after last years’ #‘s I thought 1M,
was a very low offer, insulting even! —-that said, we’re lucky to have a GM like JR, who’s
so much better than the majority of clowns out there (Sather, Murray(s), Burke, all other
southern team GM’s…)
RE: Babchuk??
Babs was great last year, at least he was in the 2nd half of the season. Sorry to see JR have so much trouble with this issue. I used to be a big skeptic on some of the calls that JR made, but hey, his calls have really taken us a long way. Rutherford knows what he’s doing and I have every bit of confidence in the world in his decision making.
I agree with you %100 randycane, we are very lucky to have Rutherford as our GM.

If by the second half of the season you mean until the playoffs.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

Babchuk couldn't help if he refused to play.
In trying to manipulate his contract situation, he did just that. If Babchuk had not—of his own volition!—left for Russia, he would have had arbitration rights. Unfortunately for him, he thinks he’s above the CBA.

F babchuck
this is the second time he has bolted for the KHL cause negotiations didnt happen the way he wanted.
i am reminded of the beatles song, carry that weight.
“and in the middle of negotiations, i break down, and sign in the KHL”
paraphrased of course.
