Preseason Game #2: Hurricanes at Thrashers - Open Thread
The Carolina Hurricanes are in Atlanta this evening for a quick exhibition matchup with the Thrashers. Neither team has won this preseason, so something has got to give for one of them. The Canes will be resting their top two lines, (which played Friday night) and will be starting the third and fourth lines, minus Jussi Jokinen, who had been in a yellow, no-touch jersey up until today. Carolina's confirmed lineup is as follows:
- Brind'Amour, Samsonov, Walker
- Yelle, Kostopoulos, Conboy
- Sutter, Boychuk, Bowman
- Ryan, Dwyer, Goertzen
- Harrison, Carson
- Wallin, Alberts
- Rodney, McBain
- Leighton, Peters
Coach Paul Maurice wants to give the young line of Sutter-Bowman-Boychuk plenty of work. Could this line be magic for the Hurricanes in the years to come?
Atlanta's lineup will reportedly have several regulars:
- Kovalchuk, Antropov, Little
- Kozlov-White-Peverley
- Fritsche-Reasoner-Armstrong
- Boulton-Slater-Thorburn
- Hainsey- Kubina
- Enstrom- Postma
- Vernace- Popovic
- Hedberg- Legace
There is no streaming that we are aware of yet for this game, but stay tuned, we will be looking and will have any updates as we find out after the game starts. Otherwise, join us as we listen to Chuck on 99.9 The Fan and make comments here on the game thread.
For Atlanta's persepective, check out Bird Watchers Anonymous.

YES!! I’ve had trouble since trying to listen to Cullen at 3:30. I even called the station at 4:45. I only get the ads too. I tried that feed lrcaniac gave at last game and had the same experience.

Btw, has anyone ever used stubhub.com before? I used it for the first time to get tickets for the Bruins/Canes game in Boston and paid around 34 bucks for each ticket and came to find out that they were actually only around 15 normally. I figured that the prices would be jacked up a bit because all of the upper level seats were apparently sold out, but 20 dollars more per ticket? Jeeze.
That’s what I heard about stubhub when I was looking for Tarheel BBall tickets a couple years ago. I went to eBay and did fine. (only paid $180 for $45 upperbowl tickets, instead of $270 (each!!!) that stubhub wanted)

Just curious...
But if no one here has any way of watching, listening, or following the game action…then what is this live feed for?
Ok I don’t know if these means anything, but on the radiotime feed, it says “ON NOW: Carolina Hurricanes at Atlanta Thrashers (not streamed)”
Is the radio station not streaming Chuck’s call online?

He was able to get through on SStream earlier on the iphone, but it’s not working now. Hopefully they are working on it.

Probably not. Preseason hockey isn’t very TV friendly in terms of ratings.

Canes goal
That didn’t take long; from the sounds of it Rod contributed – nice to get off to a good start
I am getting Chuck online. He’s just extremely quiet. I have the speakers on max and I can make out a few words every once and awhile…
Mcbain with 9:23 minutes of ice time so far. Leads the team.
Wallin, nonstopulous, yelle, harrison conboy -1, all others even.
Atlanta second goal still uncredited, was that one of our guys?
Leads everyone on Atlanta, too, with their top ice hog being Kovalchuck at 8+.
Also, looks like a shift of both power play and penalty kill for him, with the rest being five-on-five.
They’re giving him a good look.
Whatever happened to 99.9 buying out 850 the buzz…. it was mentioned a couple months ago for like one day and nothing ever came of that…. seems like it would be big news.

article about the game already out
Sounds like fewer fans than the RBC had Friday night.
http://www.ajc.com/sports/atlanta-thrashers/weather-affects-turnout-at-143466.html
Perhaps 500 fans had made it to Philips Arena by the time the puck dropped at 7 p.m. for the Thrashers’ preseason home opener Monday, most likely a result of the rain and flooding keeping fans away.
Some sections in the arena, built to accommodate nearly 19,000 fans, had two or three fans in them. The Thrashers’ bench had nearly as many players on it as the section above it had fans.
When the visiting Carolina Hurricanes scored an early goal, the individual boos of fans were audible.
“This is the emptiest I’ve ever seen it,” said Thrashers fan Justin Branley, a Georgia Tech student. At the start of the game, he was one of two fans in section 312 in the upper deck. While he took MARTA to the game, he said the rain “definitely” had suppressed attendance.
Jennifer Crowley was in town from Peterborough, Ont., near Toronto, for an insurance conference. She is accustomed to sellout crowds for Maple Leaf games.
Said Crowley, "To see an empty arena is strange.

I really don’t understand these teams charging full price for pre-season games…. they should cut the lower bowl tickets by half…. and go to all the schools and military bases around to give away the upper bowl…..
by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Sep 21, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah, they would make a killing on concession sales at least…not to mention the publicity for more sales for regular season games. Not to mention the fact that it’d be a good opportunity for fans to see professional hockey who normally can’t afford it, and for fans to sit in the lower seats who normally can’t afford it.
Not to mention the money they would make on PARKING!!!
Pre-Season hockey is not good enough to pay full price…. sorry… it just isn’t….

you would think that they might… I don’t get it either. Especially now that they raised gate prices for the regular season games.

I was sixty miles due north of atlanta this weekend. Rain Friday. rain friday night. Rain saturday starting around 4 pm (I was at a wedding of course). Rain stopped long enough to get in the tent. Rain all naight Saturday. Rain all day sunday (looked line an inch or so an hour) Rain most of night sunday. Rain all day today until after we left around noon. Future father in law said flooding on way out of town worst he had seen in fifty years. No way people would go out in that for a preseason hockey game.

2. Detroit
3. New Jersey

1-Pittsburgh
2-Buffalo
3-DC
4-NY-Rangers
5-Montreal

That’s from the N&O which has a nice article on him.
Here’s hoping for a better showing on Friday. I read that we would likely be using our main guys for the last couple of games, so that will give us a better preview picture of the team, and a couple of chances for them to all play together for a couple of games.
