Canes drop game to Thrashers, 4-2 - No practice on Tuesday
Nik Antropov, Pavel Kubina, and Ilya Kovalchuk did most of the damage for the home team as the Atlanta Thrashers defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 last night at Phillips Arena.
Carolina jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a powerplay goal by Bryan Rodney, but the Thrashers came back with two goals later in the first to finish the period with a 2-1 lead. Brandon Sutter would score shorthanded to tie the game up in the second, but Atlanta scored twice more in the third to put the game away.
After the game, John Forslund said that Brandon Sutter was the player of the game for Carolina. Michael Leighton made several nice saves, but might want one back that got by him.
All in all, it was just another preseason game that does not count, but look for the Canes to play with a bit more fire on Friday night. More cuts are expected on Tuesday and most of the expected starting lineup for opening night should be on the ice the rest of the preseason.
NOTE: The Canes will not practice as originally scheduled on Tuesday, September 22. They will be back on the ice Wednesday, the 23rd at 11AM.

Don’t hate me as I’m a Thrashers fan. I’m just here because our blog in SB Nation has no info on the game.
Armstrong and Ron Hainsey both suffered “minor lower-body injuries” during the game and were pulled as a precaution.
Good luck this season. I have no animosity towards the ’Canes and your fans never cause problems in our arena, so I hope your team does well.
LoL @ hate you. You’ll find most of us are not that petty… unless you’re a Buffaslug fan then a lot of Canes fans tend to stereotype.
Phillips arena is awesome, IMO, and ATL residents are missing out if they don’t attend your games. The suites are keen and the staff up there could make a hobo feel like a million bucks.
For what it’s worth, Buffaslug (nice word! I’ll have to remember that) fans are the most hated in Atlanta. They are just complete jerks. There’s also a lot of serious hate towards the Rangers fans, but while they are incredibly mouthy, they don’t try to start trouble in the stands. There is a lot of hate amongst our fans towards Sean Avery and some of that hostility gets transferred to Rangers fans and our fans will claim that the Rangers fans are much worse than they really are.
Not sure who will play on our side in Friday’s game. Major roster cuts will be announced on Thursday morning, so I’m guessing you’ll mostly see our final roster with 3-5 guys who are fighting for the final roster spots. We’ve had more competition than we expected for the final spots on the blueline and some guys who are on the bubble will probably be playing in that game to help our coaches decide who to keep and who to send down.
I think Buffalo fans are mad because their city is more of a dump than Pittsburgh……

Buffalo fans just suck, whatever the sport!
I mean how would you feel if you lived in a place where the sun doesn’t shine for half the year?
A courteous Buffalo fan might be the world’s rarest breed

Bills fans aren't bad.
And they’ve got that lovable loser thing from the early-90s Super Bowl heartbreaks.

Ranger fans are the current champions...
…of being unpleasant guests, but they’re pikers compared to how the fans of the Quebec Nordiques behaved.
Back in the day before the Thrashers and when the Hurricanes played out of Hartford, Quebec had the Nordiques. And back then, Washington was as far south as the NHL went on the Eastern Seaboard. The Quebec fans would charter busses (usually 10 or more) and drink for the 10 hour ride from Quebec city to Landover, MD where the old Capital Centre was (it’s now a parking lot for FedEx Field). They would get to the arena and they’d have group tickets waiting for them (about 500-600). They’d start fights, drink more, smoke (despite the no smoking policy), spit, throw things, and in several cases perform various bodily functions that one normally does in the restroom. They’d also make rude remarks to fans they found attractive or ugly. On one occasion, one the lady fans from Quebec flashed everyone. Mooning was also not uncommon.
They would also boo the US national anthem, and the Canadian anthem if it wasn’t sung in French.
Thankfully, the Nords moved to Denver and became the Avalanche.

I attended a game between the ‘Canes and Thrashers @ Philips Arena a couple seasons ago… I believe it was the night Michael Leighton made his Debut (I’ll have to check on that) for the ’Canes.
The Thrashers fans were awesome to us! We even bonded with a few of them because of our mutual dislike of South Carolina (yes… the entire state).

I was at that game as well
I sat behind a canes fan with his kid in the lower section-possibly you?
And the whole state of south carolina is not bad. Just the parts around Columbia, spartanburg, myrtle beach, sumter, orangeburg, ….
Ok, not greenville to clemson, and not charleston. otherwise…
I just went and checked out your set from Sunday, LTD. Those 3 or 4 Ruutu shots left me speechless………………….. What exactly did Forslund say to get him laughing like that? Did they ask him what woman pauloihinsa meant in English, or were they just trying to figure out if LTD and hockeymom were in attendance?
I’m headed over for Thursday’s practice – I’ll look for you if you’re there.

In typical fashion he actually laughed through most of the interview but that particular moment was when Forslund asked if he was a good tennis player. You may recall the Finnish interview from a couple of weeks back where he said he broke his brother’s racket when he “didn’t quite make it” over the net. I saw him after practice a couple of weeks ago at the RecZone and mentioned the same thing and got the same reaction. I think he was a little surprised that information made the leap across the pond.

Y’know LTD – Forslund probably only knows about that story because you were resourceful enough to dig it up and post it here where he spotted it anonymously (wait – he’s BOOBY! or Fehrandbalanced..?) You’re a credit to the blog!

The cause was, uh, uh… noble. Had to do it for the good of the team. We can’t have him getting hurt jumping over tennis nets. The team needs him to stay healthy. Besides, someone dispensed with protocol and went straight to the triple dog dare, so really I had no choice.

5 more sent back to Albany
Forwards Drayson Bowman and Steven Goertzen, defensemen Bryan Rodney and Brett Carson, and goaltender Justin Peters were assigned to Albany. The River Rats open their 2009 training camp on Wednesday, Sept. 23.
That leaves just 4 players to cut to get down to the 23 man limit, although I’d expect the canes to only carry 22.
I’m wondering if Micheal Ryan and Patrick Dwyer staying with the team is an indication that they will be the first call ups for the Canes and not one of the Boychuk, Bowman, Sutter group.
That probably makes sense.
Calling up the young kids for a 5-7 minute TOI spot replacement probably hinders their development. They only come up if it’s something longer-term, I’d imagine. Unless, of course, they explode down in Albany.
