That’s a heckuva piece from Burnside at ESPN. Though, again, I’m still much more comfortable with snubs. I’m a little lost with these kind of kudos and expectations….

Oh – and Sutter made the front page of the N&O sports section. (First time to their site since they re-designed..much better)

Burnside is predicting 3rd in the SE. I think the Canes have had a better offseason than the Panthers and they were better last year so I’m not sure how he’s coming up with that.
Florida has a lot of young talent. I don’t think they did enough to over come losing Jay Bo, but I would not be surprised to see them do something.

Normally Burnside seems like a smart writer...
…but anyone picking the ’Canes below second in the Southeast is crazy. A case can be made that the ’Canes are the third best team in the conference. Washington and Pittsburgh are better (right now), but certainly the ’Canes are as good as Boston, Philly, and better than everyone else in the East…
Yikes.

I dont think they addressed the fact that they have absolutely zero depth in my opinion. Ohlund is a great addition, IMO, but what else are they working with outside of the starting 5 players?
Tampa’s goaltending issues are worse than Washington’s, and everyone is harping on the Caps’s goaltending issues. How can they finish ahead of the Canes even if they have 0 man games lost? The only way I see it is if Ward ends up on the IR for a lengthy time, but he’s never had a real history of that…
Add to that that the Bolts top 2 scorers are over 30, which means it’s likely neither of them will play all 82…

He is picking Tampa Bay to come in second and Florida to come in fourth. Interesting.
GM of CanesCountry.com
Tampa second?
That’s a bold pick, but I have to say I like that better than Florida. The first line in Tampa is Vincent – St. Louis – Tanguay. Stamkos should be better than last year. Hedman and Ohlund have come in and that should help the defense.
That said, I think the D is still porous and the goaltending is highly suspect. But I think Tampa has more room to surprise (call it upside) than Florida.

The Great One
Totally off topic, but did you all see that he’s resigned as the coach of the Coyotes?
Yes.
There were apparently issues with his compensation as all this bankruptcy business began happening. Ulf Samuelsson is apparently the interim coach, although I can’t imagine they wouldn’t find somebody more experienced.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

I think they did hire a new associate coach slash head coach in waiting earlier this week.

You can get salads at the Verizon Center...
…but I don’t recommend them. They look a little too “pre-packaged” to me…

Ouch! My Eyes!
Sad to hear that Phil Janek has been let go as the Rat’s beat writer. I really enjoyed his coverage. Hope he lands on his feet and that the Gazette does not completely abandon any sort of thoughtful, in depth, decent coverage. There’s gonna be a lot of folks in Albany this year that we will all want to keep tabs on.
But can we please sponsor an intervention on behalf of the Infestation blog. That black on red template is ridiculous. Unless of course you don’t want anyone to actually read your blog. Geez. I think my eyeballs are bleeding.

hmmm…so I was reading through other teams’ pages and the predictions and was very confused as it appeared like 9 or 10 teams would make the playoffs in the East…
Then I realized that more than one writer was writing the “10 things you need to know….” articles each with different predictions. Very confusing…
ESPN
Scott Burnside and just about everyone else who writes for ESPN are nothing but homers. They will never give us the respect we deserve, which is FINE by me. I love how we will fly under the radar and catch everyone by surprise. “SCOTT’S PREDICTION
• There is something steady and reassuring about the Carolina Hurricanes. Not too high, not too low, which is pretty much where we have them — third in the Southeast and back in the playoffs.” 3rd in the Southeast? Who does he expect to finish ahead of us? Florida? Give me a break.
The Burman guy (is it Chris or Pete) at ESPN t-totally LOVES him some Hurricanes…. it’s because he was a whalers fan back in the day…..

Chris.
And I’ve always heard him bitching about how they used to be the Whalers. Most of ESPN does (Hartford isn’t far from the ESPN HQ in Bristol, CT.)

Interesting note from the Albany report:
They specifically mentioned that Carson looked “extra sharp.”

Maybe Harrison is the guy they’re not worried about stifling in terms of development, but Carson is still the guy if there’s a long-term hole in the D.

Awesome Award interview
He seems genuinely excited about being back, and it’s clear that he’s very comfortable in the locker room. Great bit at the end about the 4 he’d pick to be on the ice with him for an all-out brawl — gleason, whitney, cullen, and either walker or kostopolous. Great stuff.
PLEASE
leave Whitney and Cullen out of ANY brawl!!!!
PLEASE!?!?!?!

LIsten to the inteview (this is toward the end) – it’s very funny why he wants them out there. And it’s not as pugilists.
