Quick Hits - Tommi Kivisto Staying in Finland
Kivisto staying closer to home
After a disappointing debut in Red Deer last season, Hurricanes seventh round draft pick, Tommi Kivisto, will not be returning to Alberta and will stay in Finland this coming campaign. He signed to play for Jokerit. The offensive minded blueliner is representing Team Finland this week in the U20 Euro Hockey Tour where Finland is playing against Russia, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.
The young defenseman chipped in with an assist in a recent win over the Czechs, 4-2.
As we talked about before, Jakub Petruzalek will also be playing in Finland this year. He is joined by former Florida Everblades goalie, David Leggio.

Canes Country participates in Southeast Roundtable
This time of year we are asked by several hockey sites for our input or opinions about the Canes. We try our best to answer everyone's requests. You will even see Canes Country quoted in the most recent printed issue of The Hockey News, (page 30).
A week or so ago, Matt from "View from my Seats" asked us to join in a discussion with some other bloggers from the Southeast.
No, we didn't drop the gloves, but as you know most Washington fans feel like they have the division title wrapped up already, and it's still a month before the season starts. The folk at "On Frozen Blog" are no different. Litter Box Cats, Blueland Blog, and Raw Charge, were the other participants. You can check out the discussion here.

Good rumors gone bad
I got an email this week informing me about a rumor site that I had not heard of before. This guy claims to have an 80% success rate on his rumors. (much better than Eklund's 3%). At least he is not charging for his "expertise" because his rumors are all out on his Twitter account.
He also says that he worked for the NHL front office for one year and has many friends that help him "do what he does today". Check out these previous Tweets. Funny stuff.
- I will go out on a limb and say like i have for awhile now, Manny Malhotra will eventually be a Cane. Talks are going well, should get done.
- I am told Mike Comrie will not sign with the Oilers, and that the Wild, Sabres, Capitals, and now im hearing the Hurricanes are the best bets
Malhotra probably wanted too much money, but how in the world did he come with Mike Comrie in discussions with the Canes? This was after the Yelle signing, so the roster was filled up and the budget was blown, so this guy didn't do much research before throwing that one out there.
I wonder if those two losers counted in his 80% success rate?

News14 does not do a whole lot with the Canes, but they did take a short video of Eric Staal at the golf event this week. Staal says that "everyone in our room is excited for the year to start."
LTD has been taking more pictures at "precamp". The link to her latest is right here.

I guess the prospect tourn. that starts Sun. isn’t on tv or at least I don’t see it on the menu. You would think the NHL channel would’ve picked it up.
You mean this isn’t enough?:

NHL.com is covering Traverse City
From this piece by Mike Morreale yesterday
Six of the seven teams that accompanied the Red Wings to Traverse City the last three years return this season, including the Columbus Blue Jackets, St. Louis Blues, Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars in the Western Conference. Joining the Wings in the East are the Atlanta Thrashers, New York Rangers and first-year participant Carolina Hurricanes.
“I actually called Kenny (Holland) about this tournament the last couple of years but there wasn’t any room for us,” Carolina GM Jim Rutherford said. "When he approached me and said there was an opening this year, I said, ’We’re in.’ "
Another Morreale story from today features the best players from each team. He includes only 1 for most of the teams; two players for Dallas, and the Canes have 3 featured prospects: Sutter, Boychuk and Paradis. Cool.
It appears they (NHL.com) had a live blog covering the tourney last year – I’m going to check back at NHL.com and see what they have up tomorrow afternoon. First game is 2:30. Canes’ first game is at 3pm.

The Roundtable discussion
just made me hate the Caps even more. I’ve got your “fairly convincingly” right here!! Isn’t that the same guy that rated all the Washington players as the best in the east and then insulted Cory or Bubba for disagreeing with him? I know we’re all homers on these boards but at least we’re humble homers on CanesCountry. Now, where’s that schedule, I need to find out when we play Washington…
For me, the question is: what is handily? The caps won the division by 11 points last year and weren’t really challenged by the Canes. I could see that happening again. I don’t think it will, but I think that is up to the Canes (more on this later). I don’t think that Mike Green will have another point per game season. I don’t think the Canes will struggle as much as they did last season. You put those two together and anything is different.
That said, the Canes went 3-2-1 against the caps last season and picked up 7 points in the season series compared to Washington’s 6. I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect the Canes to do much better next season or the caps worse in the head to head. A 50/50 split seems about right to me. Neither team has done anything that will change that dramatically. So, if we take out 4 point swings in the head to head (i.e. reversing a game the Canes lost to a game the canes win), the Canes can only narrow the gap by A) beating more teams, or B) by the Caps losing more. Let’s look at B first.
What could lead to the Caps losing more games? I think the Caps are going to be hurt more by the Kozlov and Federov loss than others have suggested. I know Bob and Cory like Mike Knuble, but I think Federov and Kozlov, while streaky, were unknowns which made Washington that much more difficult to defend. Knuble is consistent, more so than Kozlov or Federov, but I think he won’t pull defenders away from Ovechkin the way Kozlov and Federov did thus resulting in less ice for Ovechkin and Semin, and to a lesser extent Green. I also think Brendan Morrison is done and the loss of Brashear will lead to additional hits to Ovechkin, Green, and Semin. In the end though, that might not matter. The caps probably still have enough talent to finish next season with 106 points, compared to last seasons 108. I’m assuming that the goaltending won’t be any worse than Theodore’s .900 sv% over his 57 games played.
That means to me that it’s really up to the Canes to increase their point total by winning more games. The Canes finished with 97 points last season. They took the final two games of the regular season off after securing a spot between 4 and 6, so we could be generous and say that would more likely have been 98 or 99. Even still, the Canes have to make up between 9 and 7 points next season to push the Caps. They likely won’t struggle as much from November to January, so there are a few points, but they likely won’t get as hot as they did late in the season, so let’s say that’s a wash. Cam gave up four points or so early in the season, so let’s claim those. That brings the Canes total up to about 101 – 103. To get to 106 the Canes have to win three more games next season then they did last season and Ward has to not mulligan any games. I think Ward will be better, but I think he will still have one or two lapses, which is not bad over the course of a season.
What does that mean? For me, I still think Washington wins the division. Injuries will play a role, but if they’re even, then I think Washington wins by 5 or 6 points. That said, I think the Canes team is built more for the playoffs then the Caps, so the Canes need to worry about getting in any way possible, which I think they should be able to do with the projection of 98 – 100 points.
P.S. sorry about the length, but camp is less than a week away and it’s time to start seriously discussing hockey!
I can’t really agree to much of that, I’ll be really surprised if the Caps have a repeat year. I just don’t see that. I also think the Canes have made big changes where it was needed so will see.
"Big" changes would probably be going a bit far.
We didn’t really add a top-six forward or a top four defenseman. From an outsider’s perspective (and even a relatively reasonable insider’s), it would be easy to say that those guys, while they might change the team’s style a bit, won’t have a huge impact (or even really get the chance) on the team’s overall play.

Homer weed
c’mon. if you’re looking for wild hallucinations, I thought the Atlanta guy who had the Thrashers riding Kovalchuk to 2nd behind the Caps must have really had his homer weed smokin. (he then put the Canes and TB battling it out for 3 & 4 and both barely missing the playoffs – thou he was a little vague here)
