Prospect Tournament Kicks off this Afternoon
The Carolina Hurricanes will kick off the Traverse City Prospects Tournament at 3 this afternoon with a match up against the prospects of the New York Rangers. There is a lot of anticipation in Carolina this year regarding these youngsters, so much so that Jim Rutherford, Ron Francis, and Jason Karmanos are all attending. River Rats coach, Jeff Daniels, will be behind the bench for the Canes.
Mike Morreale from NHL.com has a great preview about the Canes and is in Traverse City to cover the tournament. Morreale calls the Canes one of the favorites. I asked him if any games would be broadcast on radio, television, or otherwise and he responded that due to budget restrictions, there would not be any. But the Canes seem to be Twittering from the event and there will be write-ups after the fact.
We will be watching for any information from a variety of sources and will leave updates if we see anything of value to report. The Hurricanes are the only franchise present with three first round picks playing, so they should fare pretty well. We posted this previously, but once again the expected roster is as follows:
Forwards
Sutter, Boychuk, Bowman
Kennedy, Pistilli, Paradis
Terry, Chaput, Reed
Morneau, McCrae, Dodge
Defense
McBain, Jordan
Rissanen, Bellemore
Day, Schmitz
Goalies
Murphy, Valiquette
_____
Puck Daddy posted his season preview for the Canes this afternoon. This Don Draper quote says it all:
"Go ahead and keep insulting the Carolina Hurricanes. You'll grin like a fool for a moment, but in the end you'll die alone, sitting in your cheap seats; the partial season-ticket holder with Lucky Strike burns on his sweater, the one who women go home with out of pity."
_____
Ryan Bayda has gotten a try-out with the St. Louis Blues. The forward is still trying to earn a one-way contract this fall.

This is the closes thing I can find to live for this tournament today. It will give live scores and updates of all games being played. It’s better than nothing I guess.
I can’t believe NHL channel or NHL.com is not showing these games. Sucks!

Sorry, let me try to post again in the message box instead of the subject box.

According to the gamesheet, we’re up on the shot count 28-20 after 2. NYR has 4 penalties and our guys have played clean (or sneaky ;) ?). No PP goals.

Awesome. Thanks for the link.
As usual, some not nice comments on ‘Canes fans made in the comment section of the Puck Daddy piece if anyone feels the need to mount a resistance :). I was happy with Wyshnyski’s preview though.
I say we ignore them or point them to the Don Draper comment:
“Go ahead and keep insulting the Carolina Hurricanes. You’ll grin like a fool for a moment, but in the end you’ll die alone,……” Wysh has done our dirty work for us…Between Sports Illus and THN, many of the national folks who analyze this stuff for a living, are pretty high on us this season.
And if they’re insulting the fans, then they’re obviously clueless. Have you heard the TSN announcers heap praise on the Caniacs and Canes ability to generate such hearty fans out of nowhere, so quickly? (10 yrs is nothing in Canadian hockey terms.) I’ve been watching the repeat broadcasts on NHL network this week. It’s deafening – you can’t hear half of what the guys are saying. BTW – Game 7 tonight at 7 and 10 pm. Must See TV.

me too L of course it is hard on a scorekeeper when goals are scored so quickly. (speaking from experience). Took him a bit to get it right.

the shot count was scary there in the 3rd (15-3 NYR a minute ago) – but it’s even-ing out.

The first was a four on four for NY
And the second was short handed. It looks like four of the eight goals were scored with an extra attacker no the ice. I would have axpected the same of the last goal scored with 34 seconds to go in a one goal game, but it only shows five skaters on for the rangers.
4 – 3 Canes!

Here's some nice stats:
the columns don’t format, but Boychuk is +3 (as is Nick Dodge)
Everyone but Morneau was even or positive in the +/- (need a better way to word that)
Bowman, Paradis and Reed led with 5 shots each.
# Name G A +/- S Pim
11 Z.Boychuk 1 0 +3 3 0
16 B.Sutter 1 0 +1 4 0
21 D.Bowman 1 0 0 5 0
28 J.McBain 0 1 +1 2 2
34 P.Paradis 0 0 0 5 0
45 M.Kennedy 1 0 +1 4 0
46 M.Pistilli 0 0 0 2 0
47 M.Jordan 0 0 +2 1 0
48 H.Reed 0 1 +1 5 0
51 J.Day 0 0 0 0 0
54 S.Chaput 0 0 0 0 0
55 B.Schmitz 0 0 0 0 0
57 E.Reid 1 0 +1 4 0
58 C.Terry 0 1 +1 1 0
61 S.Morneau 0 0 -2 0 0
64 J.McRae 0 0 0 0 0
65 N.Dodge 0 1 +3 3 0
70 M.Murphy 0 0 0 0 0
73 B.Bellemore 0 0 +2 1 0
And the final shot count in the 3rd was 15 -12 for the NYR. so we had 9 “unanswered” shots to produce those 2 goals.

How can I make it 26 more days?????
That’s a fantastic write up. Sounds unbelievable. Shi!**t why couldn’t we get video?? – even an online feed would have been super!
My favorite sentences:
a very deep Carolina team that is considered one of the favorite’s at this year’s tournament.
Boychuk intercepted a pass in the Blueshirts zone and fired a shot at Stajcer. Stajcer made the initial stop, but had no chance on the rebound goal by Matt Kennedy.
Stajcer had ended the second period making big stops on first-round pick Philippe Paradis and Samuel Morneau.
With the game tied 3-3 and momentum on the Rangers’ side, the Hurricanes drained all the drama on Reid’s seeing-eye screened shot from point at 18:34 of the third period.
With time running out in the second, the Rangers nearly tied it again when Bourque came in off a cycling play and forced Carolina’s Mike Murphy to make a huge save to preserve the Hurricanes’ lead.

I’m waiting for Morreale’s update on NHL.com. Is he the only national guy there? I’m wondering if the Canes have finally earned the distinction of being the “marquis game” and he chose to attend the Canes 3pm over the 2:30 CBJ vs MIN…? Lord knows that if VS was covering this tourney (ha!), they’d only cut away from the early CBJ/MIN game to show the highlights of the Canes when required.
We play DET tomorrow. That ought to be a good one. (?)

An interesting quote from the preview article:
There’s a perfectly good explanation behind why the Carolina Hurricanes haven’t participated in a rookie tournament since Ottawa in 2005 — the club just hasn’t had the personnel within its system to produce a full team.
“Our good prospects were going right to the big team and there was no in between,” Carolina General Manager Jim Rutherford told NHL.com.
Having read that Detroit “didn’t have room” for us seemed a bit disingenuous to me, so I’m glad to see JR is willing to admit the truth.
I also didn’t know that we had so much highly-drafted talent there relative to anybody else. Our three first-rounders (Paradis, Boychuk, Sutter) were more than any other team.
