"Junior" Hurricanes win game one, take on Wings Today - Update
The Carolina Hurricanes prospects opened up their tournament with a 5-3 win on Sunday over last year's tournament champions, the New York Rangers. The Canes worked their way to a 3-1 lead, watched it evaporate into a tie, then scored the last two goals of the game to lock up the win. Chip Alexander has a story in today's N&O.
Goals were scored by Drayson Bowman, Matt Kennedy, Zach Boychuk, Elgin Reid, and Brandon Sutter. The Rangers also have a very good review of the game on their team site.
Hockey's Future has a video which includes Canes footage at about the three minute mark. The players were just taking the ice and coach Jeff Daniels was asked a couple of questions. Daniels said that Nick Dodge would be team captain.
The Hurricanes will take on Detroit in a game starting later today at 6:30. The Wings also won their first game, beating Atlanta, 6-4. Canes Country will be tracking this on Tweeter and on the scoreboard just like we did yesterday. It's not as good as watching the game, but it's better than nothing. Thanks to all who participated and helped out with links yesterday.
Here is the roster for both sides. Justin McRae has a groin pull and sat out yesterday leaving the team short one forward. He is day-to-day. It looks like Rasmus Rissanen from Finland could not make it. There is no official word from the Canes about this.
(UPDATE) - Markus just sent me an email, it seems that Rissanen is injured and had offseason surgery. Here is a partial quote from the article he sent.
Rissanen will not participate in training camp, however, as he’s recovering from an upper-body injury that required offseason surgery. He’s expected to be cleared for full contact within the next two weeks
Many thanks to Markus!
Happy Labor Day to all.

stumbled across this LaRose highlight from a past Prospects tourney:

LaRose lifts Wings over Blues, 4-1
By Matt Schwartz and Jessica Haskin
The Detroit Red Wings got their first win of the 2001 NHL Prospects Tournament behind tryout Chad LaRose’s two-goal, one-assist performance against the St. Louis Blues in a 4-1 win Friday night.
Later in the article it goes on to say that he scored his two goals in the third. Goes to show that a good performance at this tournament can be a precursor to success. Of course, he was playing for the wings at the time.

I came across this over at NHL.com and thought it was pretty cool. Brandon Sutter is blogging about the tournament (with quite a bit of help from an editor I would think) and his first entry is up now.

Yessiree – We’re leading the East, the only team there with 2 wins in Regulation (Minny won their 2nd in a SO)
That’s a great site – shows all the stats. I’ll bet Murphy’s gonna stand out by the end of the week for sv %.

two penalties against McBain this game
and three for the tourney. Hope these are the refs from the Pittsburgh series-otherwise that is a little high.
Checking out the team stats and the Wild have only four goals and are undefeated! St louis has 13! with a loss!
