Anton Babchuk Should be Moved this Week

Craig Custance from The Sporting News is reporting that Anton Babchuk should be traded before the end of the week.  In a recent chat with Jim Rutherford in Traverse City, the Carolina GM said that three teams were interested in the high scoring defenseman.

Right now there are three teams showing serious interest in the Russian defenseman, although one team has the inside track. With Carolina's roster basically set for this season, look for Carolina to ask for a prospect, most likely a defenseman, in return for Babchuk.

"I would expect that something is going to happen with him prior to camp this week," Rutherford said.

I hope Babchuck finds a good team.

I still wish we could have found a way to keep Babchuck, I understand it was probably not going to happen with all the money and drama that went on with him. He did more good for this team than bad in the long run, I just hope and can’t wait to see our new defense this fall.

On another defensive note…Sidenberg.,,on watching the playoffs again last week, to me he was the key defensiveman who brought this team as far as they did (with Pitkanen a close 2nd). Jussi and Brind’amour’s winning goals that deflected off them, came from Sidenberg’s shots from the point. He was constantly blocking shots. If I had to choose between him and Gleason, I would take Sidenberg any day. I hate it that we could not find a way to keep Sidenberg, I think it will be our biggest blunder of the summer not finding a way to sign him, When I look at what Commodore is making and compare his game to Sidenberg’s, it amazes me that someone has not snatched him up even for big bucks. Hopefully with our new defense it won’t matter that Sidenberg is gone, Time will tell and we shall see, but with their reputations they should do well.

I wouldn’t go as far as to take Seids over Gleason, but he will be missed dearly. His ability to play shutdown defense as well as move the puck on the PP will be a large void to fill.

Still not a crook!

A void filled by Aaron Ward next season and Jamie McBain shortly after that. Believe me, McBain will make you forget Dennis.

YES! YES! YES!

Babchuk caused a handfull of goals against Ward this Playoff season by missplays with the puck.

Simply put, he is too young for our team! He is a good player, but its clear the pressure really gets to him. He needs to head to a non Stanley capable but PLAYOFF capable team where he can grow and learn the way of the game.

Hated him all postseason because I knew his slip ups would keep us from the Cup, but now I can sit back and see it as it was. Just too young for an important defender position. Good luck to wherever he goes, and if he gets it going in the next few years, Id like to see him back to Raleigh!

Looks like Columbus is interested in Babchuk, with the expectation of a trade by Monday. Good place for him-even when he gets good in two or three years he won’t be able to hurt us.
