Hurricanes at Maple Leafs: Game Day Preview
The Carolina Hurricanes, (13-24-7) are currently visiting the "center of the hockey universe" as they take on the Toronto Maple Leafs, (15-22-9) tonight at the ACC. The teams have met twice so far this year, splitting the decisions at the RBC.
The Canes are playing well right now and have won two games in a row, two road games in a row, and three games out of the past four overall. They have accomplished this with a lineup consisting of several prospects and call-ups from Albany, Carolina's minor league affiliate.
While Erik Cole, Sergei Samsonov, and Chad LaRose each traveled with the team, they are not expected to play tonight, meaning that the lineup will be the same as it was against Ottawa on Sunday. The lines should start out as follows:
- Staal, Whitney, Cullen
- Jokinen, Sutter, Kostopoulos
- Brind'Amour, Tlusty, Dwyer
- Yelle, Samson, Boychuk
The defense will be Gleason, Pitkanen, Wallin, Ward, Carson, and Alberts.
Cam Ward will be facing "The Monster", Jonas Gustavsson in goal.
Ward has been hot of late and his numbers are creeping up. In the last seven games, he has a GAA of 2.11 and save percentage of .934. This will be his 13th consecutive start for the Canes.
Matt Cullen has assists in four straight games, ( 0G 5A), Rod Brind`Amour has points in three straight, (2G 1A), and Ray Whitney has points in two straight, (2G 2A).
Joni Pitkanen is still number one in the league with average ice time per pame of just under 27 minutes. Dan Boyle, Jay Bouwmeester, Duncan Keith, and Chris Pronger are all in hot pursuit.
Team leader, Andrew Alberts is 11th in the league with 133 hits.
The game is not televised locally, but check for it on Center Ice or listen to 99.9 The Fan. We will have the open game thread cranked up here at 6:30 and the puck drops at 7.

GO CANES GO.. I find it amazing, reading this article on tonights game, then go read the lead blog on the Leafs site. Its hilarious, first sentance reads , now you all know I hate the Carolina Hurricanes. The absolute ineptness in the writting of some of these other blogs amazes me, I feel like its writting on a high school bathroom wall. Canes country deserves the props it gets, insightfull writting by people that actually know what the game of hockey is about. Not a bunch of drivel like, “I hate the Canes”, “I hate them because of their cindarella run in 02”, people like ADOG actually take the time to study the game, the prospects the lines. Not to mention the contributions of HMo2 and Bob and Cory. Guess its just good old southern hospitality, and the greatest fans in the NHL.. LETS GO CANES!!!!
Good point to mention Max. We are all very lucky to have the likes of Bubba, Cory, HM, and everyone else on here. This site has a journalistic feel to it. It is obviously a Hurricanes tilted view, but the pettiness of small minded fans isn’t there.
We should all thank the guys (and girls) for making this site not only fun to read, but on par with the likes of the News and Observer and (quite frankly) espn.

I joke about their inbred fans and laugh when they suggest that the Hurricanes should be on Versus instead of Toronto

What can you say other than ignorance is bliss? and I never wrote that “the Hurricanes should be on Versus instead of Toronto”. Obviously, he never bothered to actually read the article…. whatever.

So much hate on that blog. No wonder they have such an awful team. The Powers that be would not bestow any happiness on a group that mindless and hateful of others.
Then again, half of them living in the freezing cold and arctic tundra for half the year or so….
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
Most Toronto fans have the right idea about holding their management and team accountable and not being mindless " yes " fans, but there are just SO MANY of them that it only takes 1/10 of 1% going to games to sell out the ACC for generations. Hence the paradox of a team that people hate because it doesn’t succeed, still making money.

Doesn’t give them a reason to be such assholes over there. Those people on that blog are nothing but miserable little people, who stoop to lame attacks on a team that has prospered more than they have in the last century.
They should fallow their own rules for their site more often. I cannot understand how they can write that stuff and get away with it. Perhaps Bubba can tell us why SN hasn’t banned the curators of that blog for the crap they say for other teams. I thought these blogs were supposed to be upstanding and informative. Not petty and “unoriginal” as they like to call us.
Or maybe I am to used to a blog that is informative and has people on it who actually know what they are talking about.

Interesting Commentary re: Cole Trade for O'Sullivan by Oilers; slightly OT
I think this commentary is interesting and informative as to the difference between the attitude of the media covering the Hurricanes and the media covering the Canadian teams. It is also interesting to see that the commentator is highly disrespectful of O’Sullivan and the trade that brought O’Sullivan to Edmonton. It is little wonder that many players would prefer to work and live in a sports environment that is supportive of them even when they are going through slumps.
Here is a quote from the article that gives a flavor of its tone.
“Tambellini is responsible for acquiring the ever-underwhelming Patrick O’Sullivan at last year’s trade deadline and, possibly the most egregious of all the bad contracts in Edmonton, signing netminder Nikolai Khabibulin to a four-year, $15-million contract that can’t come off the books until the deal is over, retirement or not.”
I agree with the Khabibulin deal, but O’Sullivan is a little young to be labeled as “ever-underwhelming”.
Wonder if the author has looked at the YTD numbers?
O’Sullivan 44GP 9G 13A 22 points
Cole 20GP 6G 2A 8 points
and they are complaining about that deal? Who did they expect to get for Cole?

Hurricanes: Learning How to Win (Again)
The Hurricanes are back to basics. They have to learn how to win again. It’s a tangible quality about teams that the great teams find a way to win and the great players are the ones whose greatness is most clear when the game is on the line. Whitney has been in the past a money time player. During the slump, he, too, was not his amazing, superb self during money time — which was totally unlike himself throughout his career. It is not a surprise that when Whitney is playing his game, the Hurricanes win. The same is true of Staal.
Here is an article worth reading about money time players and the statistics below the statistics revealing who are players one wants on his or her team when the game is on the line. As the Hurricanes rebuild, it is critical that the new players are players who want the puck when everything is at risk and who rise to the occasion.
I am most optimistic about the future of the Hurricanes because I think the core Hurricanes team is comprised on money time players, many of whom are young, and many of whom have won at every level of competition during their careers. Here’s the URL:

Keep in mind
Remember guys, the guys who hate Carolina most likely weren’t alive last time the leafs raised the cup. I am sure it pains them to no end for that 40+ year (and going strong)failure and to see us win it and go deep in last years PO’s is salt in the wound. Evidently they have not learned to deal with their shortcomings and over-expectations of what is clearly a lower tier team with a large following (see Yankee Fans, almost all jerks). And I’d bet what makes it worse is that their GM is American. BTW, is the 40+ year streak without a Cup the longest streak in sports now? Thats gotta sting a little.
This season would be really tough if I didn't drink the misery away.
Cubs have gone over 100 years..

Other than the Cubs I think the Leafs may well be up there. Some old AFL/AFC teams might be the longest non-Cub loser. The Chiefs maybe?

It’s not even the longest active NHL drought.
Second-longest, yes – but not the longest.

How long has it been.
Since the ’Hawks won? Thats got to be the longest in the league.

Not really
Because they haven’t won yet. If the death of a lousy owner was a cure-all, Leafs would have won in 1991.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
Personally, I would love to see a playoff drought for them to extend 10 or more years. They do not deserve to see a winning season. At least those on that blog…

For the most part, they all seem like miserable people. I’m sure there are a few good ones, but not enough for me to like anyone over there.

It isn’t much fun being called inbred idiots and nascar loving people who do not deserve a hockey team. I appreciate you at least being cordial. It is something your friends should learn how to do.
This wouldn’t be an issue if your leaf nation over there would stop the constant harassment.
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
You’ve never seen harassment until you’ve been a Leaf fan…. :)
hell, we even get if from our own beat writers. Two books in the stores right now are “Leafs AbomiNation” and “Why the Leafs Stink,” both penned by Toronto newspaper reporters.
FWIW, “centre of the universe” plays about as well in Toronto as “inbred idiots and nascar loving people who do not deserve a hockey team”. It’s the standard insult used by every other part of the country.
While I realize that stereotypes can get old in a hurry, most of what I read was tongue in cheek. it helps to know the commenters.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
Tongue-in-Cheek
I thing folks would be more likely to take it as that if the PPP blog itself didn’t start with the hate. :) Maybe it’s just because Bob & Co. do a good job of putting a professional front on things, so it’s more jarring to us, but that kind of thing sets the tone for the rest of the comments…
by Raccoon Fink on Jan 12, 2010 4:28 PM EST up reply actions
Like I said, I do appreciate the fact that you are man enough to come on here and talk this out. One of the things that is so irritating about the comments is that half of the people who live in Raleigh and support the Canes are from up north. I’m not, but to call the people who support the team those things is wholly inaccurate. I can take criticism, but like Raccoon Fink said, it isn’t right to spout that crap from a SN blog.
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
Not trying to add fuel to an already churning fire, but...
…you are just as likely to find “rednecks” up north as you are down south. Trust me, I’ve lived in both places. In fact, I have family members that would probably count.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
I understand. All I’m trying to point out is that many Canes fans here in NC are not your typical “good ole boys”.

Brian Burke
I wonder what your take is on Brian Burke? Do leaf fans believe in him do you think?
I ask because his system seems to have significant differences from Maurice/Francis/Rowe. Burke says he wants a bigger, meaner, more physical style of play, with emphasis on physical intimidation. Maurice/Francis/Rowe seem to favor speed and hands and then to get players like Tlusty who are fast big forwards but are not what is described as a traditional power forward who bangs bodies around whenever possible. No reason both Burke and Maurice/Francis/Rowe can’t both be correct and successful approaches, of course.
We like the fact that he (seems) to have a plan and we’re hoping like blazes that it actually works. The results aren’t there yet so many are sort of watching with a Spockian eyebrow raised.
The most successful Toronto teams have typically had a grinder mentality, so the sort of stuff he says plays well to the crowd. Kessel, though, isn’t exactly a thug.
Tlusty may well succeed outside of Toronto. One thing that Burke does is give guys a shot somewhere else if it appears it simply isn’t going to work out here.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
Makes sense. I like Tlusty for Carolina and think Paradis will be a Tuomo Ruutu kind of player if given time to develop. Paradis seems to loves the physical, inside game and doesn’t have to be persuaded to find somebody to hit; and he also had a lot of charisma, particularly for a teenager.
On the other hand, I think Tlusty will develop into a very important player for the Hurricanes. I suspect he will wind up playing with Jokinen and Ruutu on a line at some point before long.
Long term, I would think a Boychuk/Sutter/Tlusty line is going to get a ton of goals.
The Tlusty knock was that he showed lots at the AHL level and not enough at the NHL level. He’s young, tho’.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
Tlusty and Young Players
It takes some players more time than others to adjust to the pace and intensity of the NHL game. I think the Hurricanes organization understands that it is important not to make young players feel like failures if their maturation requires AHL time. I really like Tlusty’s play. I also think the Hurricanes fans tend to be very supportive of the young players. It may be because we have a basketball background where a struggling freshman can become a beast, game changer his sophomore year.
Ouch on the Chiefs
Long-time Chiefs fan here. Their last Super Bowl win was the first NFL game I ever watched, in 1970.
Also...
In case you missed it, Cyn4Canes and I are planning on going to Backyard Bistro in case anyone’s interested in joining us.
I have been meaning to try that place when I am in Raleigh. How is the food there? I usually go to the Ale House, any comparison there?
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
Hrm – The Ale House probably has better food, bigger selection. But if you really want great food go to Spirits Pub and Grub
The one thing Backyard Bistro has going for it to watch the Canes games is they have a red light and siren that goes off when the Canes score. Making it lively.
Another great place to watch a game is Tobacco Road sports cafe on Glenwood (and they’re opening one in Durham soon too). During last year’s playoffs, it was a madhouse. And their food blows either one out of the water.
Tobbaco Road sports cafe is excellent
Tobbaco Road sports cafe is excellent. Nice area of Raleigh as well for restaurants.
I agree with Mo not changing the lines right now, while winning games. I know some on here have been bad mouthing the Rats but with half the team now called up were starting to win a few games. I’m sure this makes it hard to add in some of our injuried. I’m sure thats also one of the reasons in not rushing some of them back into the lineup.
Staal will be the next CAPTAIN........get over it!
Hockey vs. Basketball Culture and Rules of the Road
I am fascinated that hockey has a set of rules of the road that differ from basketball. In basketball, it was always the rule that if you got put in a game and the team won, you pretty much played until the team lost. In hockey the rule according to commentators is that nobody loses their position to injury; and when you get well, you get your position back.
Both rules make sense, but they are entirely different approaches to injuries. In basketball, if the veterans were not superstars they would have to wait until the team stopped winning; and there really wouldn’t be much of a discussion about it. The coaches would say essentially, we weren’t playing that well before and not we are playing well and winning — looks like this group has it all together.
