Parker could be cuter (love the ears) but I don’t know how. Glad to see the three of them bringing awareness to a good cause.

I had never heard of Purple Crying before. I think that explains a lot of what was happening when I was babysitting infants.
And here I thought they just didn’t like me. :(
So I had no idea what Purple Crying is until I went and looked it up. It’s what we called colic?

I don’t really think it’s an actual condition in its own right. It’s just the term they gave the program to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome. I’ve always been told it was selected because the baby cries until he or she turns purple (which could be caused by colic or frustration or just loneliness).

She probably just didn’t feed him for a couple hours and then woke him up from his nap early and then didn’t give him his binky. That would be a 100% lock for a crying 10-week old.
Kinda the same as what makes Eric grumpy too.
Gleason for the "C" :
Just what do we need to do to make this happen?

Period of Purple Crying is real!
It’s great to see Eric Staal speaking out about the Period of Purple Crying. It is a real, scientifically researched period of development that all babies go through starting about two days old, peaking at two-to-three months and generally ending at five months old.
The letters in PURPLE stand for the common parts of non-stop crying in infants:
*P – peak pattern (crying peaks around 2 months, then decreases)
*U – unpredictable (crying for long periods can come and go for no reason)
*R – resistant to soothing (the baby may keep crying for long periods)
*P – pain-like look on face
*L – long bouts of crying (crying can go on for hours)
*E – evening crying (baby cries more in the afternoon and evening)
Governor Perdue proclaimed January Period PURPLE Crying to make people aware of this issue. See more
The Period of PURPLE Crying Keeping Babies Safe in NC is a unique statewide program that aims to reach every new mother, father, caregiver, friend and relative in the state of North Carolina. By sharing knowledge that infant crying is a normal stage of child development, The Period of PURPLE Crying hopes to save lives and reduce cases of shaking in North Carolina by 50 percent over five years.
I think...
At Wakemed, they won’t let you leave the hospital until you have watched the video (they also give you a copy to take home) and sign a form saying that they made you watch the video and gave you a copy. The DVD has the video in several different languages.
I personally thought it was kinda silly, but then, you read so many stories about idiots shaking babies, that maybe it’s now necessary to treat everybody like an idiot. Of course, they might want to address THAT problem on the front end by making a video entitled “The Purple Period of Your Dumb Ass Needs to Wear a Condom Before Procreating”. But that’s just me…

The Period of PURPLE Crying
The deal about the PURPLE crying video is, in part, to let parents (and everyone) know some things about early increased infant crying that they might not have known – and how to cope with it when it gets intense.
- It can be really frustrating and overwhelming when your baby cries A LOT more than you expected, you don’t know why, and there’s nothing you can do to stop the crying
- In the first few months of life, sometimes infants can cry for up to five hours – and that’s NORMAL
- Knowing what to expect and that it’s normal, not something wrong with your baby or you, as parents, can really help with feelings about yourself and your baby
- It IS always important to hold and soothe babies – comfort, carry, walk, talk – but that doesn’t always stop the crying
- Always check to see if the baby is hungry, tired or needs changing
- It is normal to get frustrated and upset but what parents and other caregivers DO with that frustration and anger can make all the difference
- It’s OK to walk away FOR A FEW MINUTES if it’s too frustrating. Put the baby in a safe place, take a little time to calm yourself and then check on the baby
- If you think there may be something wrong with your baby, always check with your doctor
- Crying is the number one reason parents shake or hurt their baby
- Shaking can cause lifelong disabilities or even death
- The period of PURPLE Crying DOES end – at about 4-5 months of age
