Hurricanes at Red Wings: Game Day Preview
There will be winning and losing streaks on the line tonight when the Carolina Hurricanes, (14-24-7) visit "The Joe" to tangle with the Detroit Red Wings, (23-16-6). The Hurricanes have won three in a row and four of their last five. They are 5-2-1 in their last eight games.
The last place team has been playing well lately, probably more like they thought they would be at the beginning of the year. The recent influx of youth on the club certainly has not hurt that cause.
Before the Red Wings lost 6-0 to the Islanders on Tuesday night, they had just beaten the Sharks, 4-1 and the Kings, 2-1. Like the Hurricanes, they have been battling key injuries all season long and they were playing better hockey recently.
There is also a very long streak in play tonight. The Carolina franchise has not won a regular season game at "The Joe" in over 20 years. Will they be able to break through now?
The Canes will be starting the same group which started the Leafs game and the Ottawa game before that.
- Staal, Whitney, Cullen
- Jokinen, Sutter, Kostopoulos
- Dwyer, Brind'Amour, Tlusty
- Yelle, Boychuk, Samson
Gleason, Pitkanen, Alberts, Ward, Carson, and Wallin will be on defense. Cam Ward will make his 14th consecutive start in goal.
Jimmy Howard will start for the Wings, his 10th straight for the home team.
According to the Detroit News, the lineup for the Red Wings will be as follows:
.Henrik Zetterberg-Pavel Datsyuk-Todd Bertuzzi
• Drew Miller-Valtteri Filppula-Danny Cleary
• Patrick Eaves-Darren Helm-Kris Draper
• Brad May-Justin Abdelkader-Kirk Maltby
That's right, the Canes will be facing "homeboy" Patrick Eaves. Will he hurt his old 'mates? Eaves has scored five goals and seven assists in 34 games so far this season.
For more in depth information about the Wings, check out Winging it in Motown, another great SBN blog.
The game will be televised locally in HD by FS Carolinas starting at 7:30. Or, listen to 99.9 The Fan. We will have the open game thread kick-started here at 7.

Well as I remeber Eaves he gets hurt every other game. So you have a 50/50 chance of being correct.

The IR’s Patric Eaves will have something to prove tonight. Maybe some rogue Cane’s fan will sneak into the Joe and shoot his shoulder with a Nerf gun. That ought to put him out of action for a few months.

Ohhhhh yea, Eaves. Forgot he played for them. Hmm. Can we bring him back for A.Ward? Ok, I gotta stop…I said I was gonna be nice.
Was just reading the game preview over at Winging it. They described former Red Wing AWard this way.
(he of run mouth incessantly fame)
And that’s like when he was playing there in like 2003? Apparently this isn’t a new trait.

I’m not a big fan of Rod moving up to the third line. Who knew get a couple of points and you can move up I line.
Staal will be the next CAPTAIN........get over it!
His move up has paid off in a few goals, and +1 ratings
If he continues to play this way, I’m fine with it. He has shown he can lead that line of youngsters. He still makes me nervous on the PK, tho.
Go Canes!
I don’t get the Canes fan hate for Eaves.
He certainly isn’t the most fragile player we ever had.
If you wanna blame him for AWard 2 then I can get behind that.
I don’t think it was the fragility, it was just that he did absolutely nothing while he was here. We always heard he would develop into a scoring wing, but he just never could put it all together.
Still not a crook!
He didn’t exactly burn it up, but he wasn’t given a great opportunity either.
Regardless, I have no ill feelings towards him and its always a little surprising to me that people do.
Not ill feelings on my part just complete and total apathy. He never really did anything (except sport a fantastic playoff beard in mid-November) that made him stand out in my mind. And for what we gave up to get him and what we were paying him, that wasn’t a recipe for long lasting devotion.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."

Oh wow. That is kind of creepy. I’m on the same wavelength with a lot of people on here apparently. I guess we can chalk it up to “great minds” and whatnot.

We gave up Commodore and Stillman, neither of which was going to resign.
We also got Corvo in that deal.
Agreed, but at the time Stillman was a heck of lot more productive than Eaves and remained so during the time Eaves was here. Because Eaves didn’t come in and pick up Stillman’s lost production, what we gave up to get him wasn’t worth what we got in return. Now an argument could be made that we traded Stillman for Corvo and Commodore for Eaves as far as talent goes, but in terms of roster positions we lost Stillman for Eaves.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."

I think Eaves was the throw in simply because JR worried, and may have been right to, that there would have been a fan riot over trading two favs for one player, no matter how good Corvo is. Making it two for two, gave it a symmetry that could be sold to the populous.

Right, that’s what I’ve always thought as well (at least in terms of the number of warm bodies on the team).
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
Eaves was sought after by the Hurricanes. They thought he could be nurtured into a 20+ goal a season forward; but in the end, Eaves was his own worst enemy in terms of not being able to turn his talent into performance.
Rutherford wanted Vermette but they werent having it so he settled for what a lot of people thought was a high ceiling player in Eaves. the Ottawa fans were disappointed that Eaves was gone because they thought he would again, after his injury, become the player that put up 20 goals his rookie year.
I don’t think saying a guy’s fragile qualifies as Hate and ill will.

He is going to be that uncle that every kid in Canada has that will sit at the table at Christmas saying " Did you know I scored 20 goals once in the NHL! " before his shoulder falls out of joint and his wife has to hold an ice back on it for the rest of the night.

He was kind of soft with the puck
But that kid has ONE amazing wrister..if you go back and look at old highlights when he scored those 5 or so goals with us..they were all amazing shots. To bad he didn’t ever come into his own with our team. I always liked Eavesy

That was the most frustrating thing about him. You could see the potential, it was just like he could never chew gum and walk at the same time. If he had ever gotten it together he would have been a potential 40-50pt guy.
Still not a crook!

Eaves and Potential Vs. Performance
My take is somewhat different on Eaves. Eaves shows that he is the son of a former NHL player who became a college hockey coach. He has an amazing shot and is a fine skater. I think Eaves is the kind of player who over-thinks every move that he makes and tries for perfection with each moves. He is a classic case of paralysis by analysis. I watched a practice at the RBC in which he made some amazing goals during a shooting routine; but then during other drills he seemed frustrated because he couldn’t get the perfect shot.
Eaves is the kind of player who could one day reach his potential. I would have preferred Eaves to have shown more of a commitment to physical play each night; and I wondered if he didn’t over-use nagging injuries as a reason to sit out games. Eaves with Gleason’s heart would be a frightening good hockey player.

Honestly, there is nothing Eaves could do in this game tonight that would suprise me.

Fish die, s**t happens.
However, for the record, I just did my pre-game 30% water change. It’s been nearly 80% successful in getting us the W. Not much more I can do but watch and pray to the hockey gods.

I think you should only do that (the 30% water change) for home games…
Taylor Hall Sweepstakes!!! lose all road games, win 80% of home games… recipe for success

He played her long enough to know to go glove side high. If he can not find a soccer ball or a banana peel, I think he has a good enough shot w/o our help.

Next to the Panthers, the Dead Wings are my most despised team in the league. Unfortunately, I have never witnessed a regular season win against them. I’m afraid with their effort, or lack of it, from their last game, we will see a valiant effort out of them tonight. At least we won’t have to worry about that moron that stands on top of the goalie tonight. :)
I would kill for a dude like homer on our team, but you have to hate him as a fan of the opposition!

I know what you mean and I suppose you’re right. Since I always want the Wings to lose, I have a harder time than most seeing his good side… He does a good job at what he does tho… (being a turd)
Lol is there a stat for that?!
