LaRose and Samsonov Are Back: Lightning at Hurricanes, Game Day Preview
Chad LaRose and Sergei Samsonov will both return to the ice as the Carolina Hurricanes, (14-26-7) host the Tampa Bay Lightning, (18-19-10) tonight at the RBC. LaRose missed 17 games because of a lower body injury, while Samsonov missed seven games due to an upper body concern.
Drayson Bowman was reassigned to Albany this morning and Zach Boychuk was returned on Sunday.
Just when you thought the Canes might have turned a corner with a three game winning streak, they went back to their losing ways as they lost a tough game to Detroit last week Thursday, and laid an egg on their home ice against Atlanta on Saturday night.
Will the home team come out with some jump tonight? The good news is that they have had success against Tampa and have won two of three games against their division foes so far this year.
The bad news is that the team is running out of time if they still plan on turning this abysmal season around. While it would nearly take a miracle of Biblical proportions for the Canes to get back into the playoff mix at this time, it's still not mathematically impossible. Many fans as well as the owner himself seemingly have all but given up hope for this season, but the players claim they have not.
They can prove it tonight.
Cam Ward will be making his 16th consecutive start tonight and will be facing Antero Niittymaki.
The top two lines will not change from the previous few games, but expect coach Paul Maurice to mix in Samsonov and LaRose within the third and fourth lines as the game progresses. In other words, the players who perform better will earn more minutes.
Tampa Bay has been very mediocre this season and has lost two in a row themselves. Mike Smith is out hurt, so their backup in goal right now is Dustin Tokarski, who replaced Niittimaki on Saturday night when he was shellacked by Florida.
Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos, and Vincent Lecavalier all average about a point a game and lead the Lightning in scoring. For more information about the Bolts, check out what Cassie and John have to say over at Raw Charge.
Don't forget, the first 10,000 fans in the door tonight receive Chad LaRose bobbleheads.
The game will be televised locally by FS Carolinas starting at 7. As always, we will have the open game thread cranked up here at 6:30.
(Again, sorry about the outage on Saturday night. The thread was shut down for over an hour because of a major server problem, but hopefully those problems have been corrected).

I was thinking how we’re all so tolerant of the young kids and so jaded about the vets.
Did anyone hear Mike M on the Aftermath Saturday night? He was talking with Forslund and made a great observation. He said that he liked sports a lot better when he didn’t know how much everyone got paid. He went on from there, but you get the gist of it. (It was said in the context of disappointment that Staal wasn’t the gamechanger Kovalchuk was in the game.)
Sad, but true. Once you have those salary spread sheets in front of you, your expectations change, and then disappointment/anger set it when they’re not met. And the same may be happening in the locker room and between the ears of those players.

Just do not see the vets on this team playing with any type of hunger…Staal may have been a game changer in one game this year( 5 pt game) other than that a big disappointment. and yes it is sad but true, only because you see the players making less money putting forth the effort and making a difference..
I have to admit to grumbling about Eric Staal’s salary, too ($6M this season, peaking at $9.5M in ‘15-’16, for an $8.25M cap hit).
But, take a look at this player salary sort.
Yes, he may not be the game-changer that Ovechkin, Crosby, and Malkin can be (unless he wants to, that is). But, I would much rather have Eric on our team than say Brad Richards or anyone else below his salary rank.
Your opinions may vary.
Feeling Jaded About Veterans
I really don’t have much of an issue per se with how much veterans are paid. I spend more time trying to figure out how to deal with the fact that there are limited resources and the team has to make some specific changes to succeed. I think Manascalsco is becoming more and more unbearable in his radio show. I heard him going off on Eric Staal for missing a penalty shot; perhaps forgetting that Ovechkin’s inability to hit a penalty shot cost the Capitals a game when Michael Leighton was in goal.
I think the Hurricanes veterans who are not going to be re-signed really have nobody but themselves to blame. Specifically, Yelle was given a great opportunity to finish his career here and wasted that opportunity. Aaron Ward was bad beyond description. Scott Walker had a miserable year, although much of his miserable year came from battling injuries. Wallin could have made himself indispensable but instead really didn’t do so. I feel the worst for Matt Cullen because his play has been fine this year; but he seems to be bearing the brunt of the failures of others. LaRose too was fighting injuries; but his lack of scoring is something for which he is accountable.
As professional athletes, we expect the veterans to demonstrate leadership and not to make silly mistakes. With the young kids, I at least fully expect them to have moments where their inexperience shows. For me, I keep hoping Samsonov can find his north/south scoring game. I, however, am somewhat weary of seeing veterans like A.Ward and Wallin and Brind’Amour make the same foolish mistakes game after game; and with Brind’Amour I am especially tired of watching him play as if he would shatter into little tiny pieces if he ever made a body check with real intention to make a statement.
“As professional athletes, we expect the veterans to demonstrate leadership and not to make silly mistakes. With the young kids, I at least fully expect them to have moments where their inexperience shows.”
Funny thing is, that I haven’t seen to many mistakes by the kids while they have been here. Case in point, #16. They have played better hockey than many of the vets on this team as of late. Problem is that many of them do not have a scoring touch now. Can’t have a team full of kids who can’t score.

Brad Richards
“But, I would much rather have Eric on our team than say Brad Richards or anyone else below his salary rank.” WOW that statement is laughable. No offense to you Elsker, but did you see the names on that list?
+1
I would take a Gaborik or Heatley or Kovalchuk over Staal. Those guys are true superstars, unlike Staal. He isn’t a superstar. He may be our franchise player, but that doesn’t make him a superstar by any means. The guys isn’t consistent enough to do so.

Kolvalchuk will head that list next year, if he gets his way, so he’s not an option.
Sorry, but I’d personally rather have Staal than either Gaborik or Heatley. Don’t believe Gaborik will have the shelf life of Staal and do not care for Mr. Heatley’s character.
Again, your opinions may vary.
I think the real problem with Staal is that he does not have a playmaking winger. Cole is not, I repeat, IS NOT, the answer to making Staal play better. Staal needs a at least one good winger who can set up plays for him and vice versa.
It doesn’t need to be anyone from that list really (although it would be nice). Somebody like a Cory Stillman in his prime would make Staal a better player. I think much of his problem stems from not having skilled enough wingers and trying to hard to make things happen.

I think Manascalsco is becoming more and more unbearable in his radio show. I heard him going off on Eric Staal for missing a penalty shot;
McSackerton is a homer moron who only says what JR tells him its ok to say. I can’t see how he was ever bearable to anyone who does not wear rose colored lenses. He and John owe the lady who called Eric Cole a " million dollar pacifier " a huge apology as they ripped her a new one and then were calling out Cole two weeks later.

Matt Cullen is a 2nd line center on every team in the league and a first line center on a few teams.
Chad LaRose is a top 6 forward.
I found it funny the other night when Mike M. was bashing Staal, then John Forslund came on and stuck up for Staal. Mike’s argument changed quickly with the call-ins. I don’t blame Staal for the Atlanta game, but I do understand some do. That’s fine, but stick to your guns – I don’t respect wafflers.

Lines Tonight
I know I won’t see this, but here are two lines I’d like to see.
Jokinen-Sutter-Staal
You have your shooter (Staal), your drive the net guy (Sutter) and your garbage guy (Jokinen).
Whitney-Cullen-LaRose
Your shooter (Whitney), your drive the net guy (LaRose) and your garbage guy (Cullen).
I’d like to see what these lines could do.

Yes Eric Staal is over paid
So what, good for him, get it while you can get it. To me he is still our #1 guy, has this year been a let down by Eric?…….. Yes. Next year can he score 60+ goals? Yes and he’s the only one that has that potential right now.
So go out tonight Eric with your ego, upper body mystery, lower body mystery, crack ribs, emotional mess, torn obliques, pulled groin, big paycheck, and shoot the puck.
THE END.
Staal will be the next CAPTAIN........get over it!
How is someone with a career high of 45 goals going to magically score 60 next season, especially with the wingers on this team he has to play with (or centers if he plays wing)?
