What is the next major move made by the Canes?

With Rod Brind'Amour being stipped of the "C" and it being given to Eric Staal, it looks like the changes we were all expecting are starting to happen.  It's reported that the Canes have also asked Ray Whitney and Nic Wallin to waive their NTC's.  With the Olympic trade deadline just around the corner and the Canes still holding the worst record in the league; what is the next major change to occur in Carolina?

Next Major Moves

Here’s my take on how things will go down in the very near future:

1. Whitney waives NTC and is traded to a contender such as Boston, Pittsburgh, or L.A.Kings for a #1 draft choice;

2. Matt Cullen is likewise traded, perhaps to Rangers, for #2 draft choice;

3. Scott Walker is traded for #3 draft pick;

4. Aaron Ward is traded for future considerations (some practice hockey sticks and free promotional practice pucks) at the trade deadline;

5. I will go out on a limb and say that LaRose is traded to a contender who wants heart, speed, playoff experience, and supplemental scoring.

by abramsdoug on Jan 21, 2010 10:12 AM EST reply actions

1. I agree with Whitney getting traded to a contender. I think Pittsburgh or LA would benefit from his services. I also think that Calgary, Vancouver, and San Jose should consider trading for him.

2. Cullen for a 2nd or 3rd is a real possiblity. Most likely, he would be a 3rd line center and PK guy for most of the contenders.

3. I don’t see anybody trading for Walker. He’s a good guy, but injuries, age, and not that much productivity are all working against him. I could see him going to a bubble team in need of some grit. My opinion is he only fetches a 5th or a mid range prospect.

4. I hope to god someone will take Aaron Ward. At this point, I wouldn’t mind paying half of his salary; just get him off this team.

5. I could also see LaRose going elsewhere. I wouldn’t mind keeping him. If he plays well, we should at least keep him until the real trade deadline – let him increase his trade value.

6. If Corvo comes back healthy and plays ok, he’ll be gone at the real trade deadline.

7. I would love to see Sammy go elsewhere. I would rather keep LaRose than Samsonov, but I think it is unlikely anybody wants Sammy with his price tag.

That last option seriously just made me LOL at work!! Thanks for the laugh :)

Considering how the organization rides Cam until he is about dead, I consider them starting the back-up goalie a “major move.”

Oh it totally is. That’s why it’s so funny!!!! I can see Manny calling up Leights “Man, I don’t know how you put up with this s**t for so long!”

I am sure leights left manny a note that said “see ya wouldn’t wanna be ya”.

I voted for Manny. I truly believe the he’ll get a start in the next month. Which will probably be before Great Rebuilding Project. OK maybe 50/50.

Who's laughing now?

That last option was the first move to happen. :0)

Legace starting against Philly tomorrow.

How about this trade: Whitney and Brind’Amour to Chicago for Versteeg and a 2nd rounder? This one probably won’t happen, but I can see Whitney going to CHI for a 1st rounder (that is if they don’t go out and get Kovy).

by rubyhawk on Jan 21, 2010 1:25 PM EST reply actions

I believe JR has said Brindy will not be traded.

I don’t know if Versteeg would fit in here, but I like his game.

by Caniac1026 on Jan 21, 2010 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

I’m still a fan of JR waiting till the off-season and trying to pick up Alexander Frolov as an UFA to fill our first line winger need. I think he would be the perfect big bodied playmaking winger that could compliment Staal’s play style at an affordable price of $3-4 million. Frolov-Staal-Ruutu would be a decent enough first line in my opinion, especially if we had a solid scoring 2nd/3rd line rolling also. Throw in a future superstar like Hall/Seguin and we would be an easy playoff contender.

I think JR should target a young top-4 D to trade for.

by JussiJuice on Jan 21, 2010 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

Frolov will go for quite a bit, but he would be a nice pick-up for Staal.
If he weren’t so pricey, Kovalchuk would be even better.

Frolov would be a game changer for the Hurricanes

   Frolov would be a game changer for the Hurricanes. I suppose it is conceivable that Rutherford would trade Pitkanen for a player such as Frolov — although I am going to be very, very surprised if Pitkanen is traded. Still, it is striking how much the Hurricanes could benefit from a player such as Frolov — along with a future superstar forward from the draft.

by abramsdoug on Jan 21, 2010 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Frolov is an UFA

Don’t need to trade anything for him. Just call him up on July 1st with a solid offer and tell him we are looking to win another cup. I think Frolov will make it to the UFA deadline without signing a deal unless LA goes on a serious Cup run. He probably wouldn’t even be that expensive, I’d guess in the $3-5 million range depending on length. I think with a star center in Eric Staal and an upcoming possible superstar in Hall/Seguin we could have a lot of incentive to draw in a good player.

by JussiJuice on Jan 22, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

Frolov would be a great addition. He’d likely be in the higher range of that 3-5 range. Would definitely shore up the first line. Could work in the salary structure given the young players.

Frolov is an offense threat, but I’m nervous as to why the Kings have been trying to unload him for such a long time. A lot of people here complain about Staal’s effort from game to game and I have heard Frolov’s effort is really bad. For the price he would command and his presumed history, I don’t think he would be a good fit in Carolina.

by PackPride17 on Jan 22, 2010 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know if Chicago is going to make any huge trades or add any big players because they are playing so well. They might not want to upset team chemistry by sending out or bringing in new faces. That is just what I have been seeing from the Chicago hockey blogs and writers.

by JussiJuice on Jan 21, 2010 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

there is no way Chicago could take on Whitney’s and/or Brindy’s salary without sending back more to us. I also don’t think either of those players are what Chicago needs or wants. They have plenty of wing players and Madden fills their old guy with a cup position.

Draft Picks

I would rather have JR scout out another diamond in the rough underperforming player than pick up late first round or 2nd round draft picks. We have consistently sucked at making picks past the first 15 overall.

I see the next move they make being either:

Ray Whitney

to the Kings:
Thomas Hickey or Colten Tuebert
or
to the Canucks:
Mason Raymond or Michael Grabner

by JussiJuice on Jan 21, 2010 2:24 PM EST reply actions

I seriously doubt the Kings move Tuebert for Whitney. Corvo perhaps, but I don’t see the Kings re-acquainting themselves with Corvo.

I think Cullen goes first. To me Whitney has more value and JR might want to hold on to him a little longer to drive the price up. But either way, let’s get it started!!!

by xlwino on Jan 21, 2010 3:32 PM EST reply actions

Agree on Whitney in principle. But I also think it’s possible some GM could know what he wants and make a sweetheart deal sooner than later to avoid losing him. More time to acclimate etcetc.

by drifterscape on Jan 21, 2010 7:05 PM EST reply actions

I’m a little suprised by the results so far. Either people are voting on what they actually think will happen next or all of you are taking pity on Rod. Rod has been one of the main whipping boys this year and I thought he would have received more votes. I guess everyone is feeling sorry for him since he lost his captain role.

Brind'Amour and Jim Rutherford

Jim Rutherford has been giving interviews saying that Brind’Amour will not be traded, but will retire as a member of the Hurricanes and will be a part of the Hurricanes organization in some capacity. Brind’Amour has been criticized severely for his play - and I am one who believes the criticism is well-deserved. I would point out that Brind’Amour played about seven minutes even strength and was +/ 1 for a total of -24. I also think he handled the transfer of captain with dignity and grace. He is a fine human being; but a form of hubris is his downfall - he seems unable to accept the fact that his hockey skills are no longer fully intact. He is by all accounts a humble and caring person in all other respects. I believe and hope he will retire at the end of this season.

BIG MOVE!

Canes will pick up Kovalchuk for Aaron Ward, a Martin Gerber jersey and a bag of pucks.

by dahep on Jan 22, 2010 2:40 AM EST reply actions

As far as what has been metioned above, I can realistically see Whitney, Corvo, Cullen, and maybe Walker as players others teams would want and likely give something up for. I hope Cullen and Walker are not considered shoppable though you never know what mgnt is thinking. I think they are both the best skaters and diggers on the team. As far as Chad (I can’t score) LaRose, I wish they would market him but I do not think they would consider trading him at this time with his new contract. He needs to start scoring alot more and not just shooting the puck at the opposing goaltender all the time. Do not think they would get what Samsonov is worth (I wish he would actually shoot the puck more often). Do not think they would consider shopping Pitkanen.

by sdbrassfield on Jan 22, 2010 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

I think Whitney, Corvo, and Cullen will be traded. I hope Walker, Brind’Amour, AWard, Wallin, and Samsonov are traded, but I don’t think other teams are interested in those players.

I think Whitney will be back and I think LaRose will probably stay for the final year of his contract. Corvo could come back, could not – I’m up in the air about him. I do hope the Canes find one more center for next year, someone that can play on the 3rd line.

by PackPride17 on Jan 22, 2010 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

Oh and I definitely wish we could get rid of A Ward, but I think we will be paying for at least half of him for a while…That was a bad deal…He is still playing for Boston I think ?

by sdbrassfield on Jan 22, 2010 11:36 AM EST reply actions

Chad LaRose

I really don’t see LaRose being traded at the deadline. If he plays well the rest of the season I could see him getting moved at the draft, but the underproduction and injury coupled with the money for next season will likely keep him here until next season. Cole as well.

Come the draft, when teams are looking for pieces for next season, that could all change. Calgary could take a flyer on Cole. Not sure what would happen with Rosey. Guys like him get traded for other guys like him. Any upgrade may require taking on a longer and higher valued contract, which I don’t think is in the best interests of the team unless it’s for a younger player.

It looks like whoever voted for Legace getting a start won, unless they make a trade before gametime.
