Hawks fan invading Canes Country

Hello all,

I'm a Chicago Blackhawks fan recently relocated to the Wilmington area for work for a few months. The plus of this is that I'll manage to be in North Carolina when the Hawks come to town. I've already got tickets to that particular game, but I was curious if you guys had any tips on where to go before/after the game, etc. I've heard the big thing at Canes games is tailgating, which would be very cool for an NHL game. Any tips on that would be appreciated. (FYI- if you suggest a restaurant or bar, please keep in mind that I'm an early 20's dude and I'll be attending with my mid-40's father who dislikes loud noises, so if you could tailor your suggestion to that I'd be very appreciative)

Also- I saw the FanPost about the Wilmington Ale House, and I must say I've been there a couple of times and it seems like a decent place to watch a hockey game (even had the Penguins- Islanders game on a couple of TVs Tuesday night). Any other suggestions for a good place to go to watch a game?

Also, as a side note, I can't vouch for how well Tuomo Ruutu has played for you guys, but thank you so much for Andrew Ladd in that trade. I'm a big fan of his.

Thanks again Caniacs.

Place to eat

The Backyard Bistro is pretty nice and is pretty much across the street from the RBC Center. It’s not loud (I’m almost 50) and sometimes they do a live radio show from there. My wife and I sometimes park our car in the West lot then walk there, it’s that close.

ruttu has recently been named one fo the 5 “untouchables” that JR is going to build this team around. along with staal, cam ward, gleason and sutter.

id say thats a pretty good outcome for us on that trade.

I echo the Backyard Bistro suggestion. It’s a really nice place. I’m not sure how much tailgating there will be because of the start time/weather, but there may be a few people out there. They’re usually pretty welcoming to opposing fans, so you may be able to join one of those. Hope you enjoy your trip to the RBC!

Oh and those of us sporting the sightless eye would like to think we got the better end of the Ruutu-Ladd deal. Ruutu is a HUGE fan favorite and, like Chris said, an important piece of our team.

If you’re venturing out a bit, The Pit in Downtown Raleigh is my favorite restaurant around.

Barry Melrose Rocks: Hockey and mullets. What else is there?

The Pit also has BBQ Tofu (if you don’t eat meat).

And Ed Mitchell killed Bobby Flay on “Throwdown” (bonus)

Andrew Ladd is a great player—-and I still root for the Hawks a lot b/c he is on the team.
But we can’t thank you enough for our Ruuuuuuuuu! He has been a fan favorite since he first “flew on to our ice”, took a stick in the face, and with that big smile——-kept playing!

He will be a huge part of our team as we re-build!

we ruuuuuuuuu him because we love him. Truthfully these are the best trades, where it works out really well for both sides. These are the kind of trades that lead to good relationships between GM’s and future, equally beneficial transactions.

BTW Ladd’s fight w/ Kesler the other night gets a big +1 from me. Especially him mocking Kesler’s cut from the first bomb Ladd threw!

So you’re saying Patrick Sharp for Matt Ellison and Kris Versteeg for Brian Bochenski wouldn’t qualify?

I’m glad you guys are happy with Ruutu. May I suggest all Hawks and Canes fans join hands throughout the arena and sing a happy song at intermission?

In all seriousness though, really looking forward to my RBC trip. Only other stadium I’ve been to is out in Phoenix, and well, there aren’t really a lot of people out there these days. With any luck this won’t be my last Canes game either (though maybe I’ll get to return as a fan of the home team some time)

I would love to go see a Hawks game just for the anthem if nothing else. That is a cool way to be patriotic. Wish we did that here. And the song you guys have after your goals too (which there seems to be alot of this year).

Tailgating opportunity

If you want to tailgate just respond. I’ll let you know where we’re going to set up. We’ll be out about 3:00 for the Hawks game. Also, you’ll be happy to know there will be a few Hawks fans at this particular tailgate.

I was intrigued by the tailgate, but cake? Someone’s gotta come clean about this.

Cake: fact or fiction?

Cake is indeed good. A friend of ours makes it. Unfortunately the Tailgate has now been moved indoors to a nearby spot due to weather. I’m hoping that it doesn’t get canceled all together now.

They are calling for 12 inches of snow on Saturday? I’ll believe it when I see it.

Great hockey weather, of course were driving up on Sat. to the game. Now I think we may spend the night after the game, thanks for the weather update.

If the weather was going to be better I would say to tailgate…. Bring a grill to fire up… some good music to blast… beer… and a cornhole (or other tailgating) game and you’ll be good to go….

But the weather is going to suck…. So I would say either Backyard Bistro (right across the street from RBC Center) or The Pit (Downtown Raleigh) or Rudinos (on the corner of Edwards Mill and Duraleigh). The first and last are the closest to the RBC Center.

I also hear that the Edwards Mill Bar and Grill is good.

I wonder if these guys made it to the game, and if so, if they enjoyed themselves?

They were standing in front of us waiting to get. One Cane fan told them he would light their feathers on fire if they sit in front of him and block his view.

Thanks again all!

Your suggestions were most helpful. We went to The Pit for dinner Friday night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Checked out the NC State “game” on Saturday afternoon and had a good time at the Hawks-Canes game Saturday night. Despite the outcome, it was a fun game to watch.

I must say, as far as opposing fans go, Canes fans were among the classiest I have experienced thus far. The only irritating fan in my section was, regrettably, a Hawks fan. I don’t know why he felt the need to yell “if you want to win the cup, you need to beat teams like this!” at the Hawks’ bench 200 times, but there you have it. Considering you guys have won a Cup far more recently than we have, can you please remind me what the Canes’ record was that year? They were 82-0, right? Because winning the Stanley Cup means that you are the best team and never lose? Idiot. I’m sorry for anyone who acted even remotely like that man. He does not represent us. I’d invite you all to the United Center to see what truly intelligent Hawks fans sound like, but it’s hard to find some of them…

All in all, it was a fantastic experience, and it’s a shame the weather kept more people from enjoying it with us. I’ll be rocking my Cam Ward t-shirt (what a game he had!) happily.

If you guys wind up doing another meet-up for a Canes game down in Wilmington, I’ll hopefully be able to make it.

(As a side note- I’m sure I don’t need to lecture most of you on the finer points of Southern girls, but your Storm Squad made our Ice Crew look downright homely!)

Been to the last 2 Canes/Hawks game up in Chicago. Great fans. They even let us scream when Ruutu tied it last year w/ 27 seconds left to push it to OT. A few of the guys sitting around us were very impressed w/ Cam that night. He saved many an odd man rush and was outstanding, despite the loss.

And I don’t agree. I love your Ice Crew.

Awesome pictures and commentary! Looks like you folks had great seats. I don’t have all my pictures from the game uploaded yet, but I do have an album here on flickr, and while it is Canes-centric of course there are some Hawks players as well.

Glad you had a good time! Will definitely be a game to remember for quite some time.
