The Subtle and Not So Suble Statistics Underlying the Grand Fail

I have been thinking about the various statistics, some kept and some that are not formally recorded any place,  that explain the massive fail for the Hurricanes this season.  Here are a few of the categories of the statistics:

    1.  How many times when down one goal late in the game did the Hurricanes fail to score on a power play?

     2.  How many times were the Hurricanes out-hit in a game?

    3.  How many times did the Hurricanes have a goal arising from a purposeful defection by a defenseman who was playing with his back to the goalie? [I suspect this number is 0]

    4.  How many times did the Hurricanes have a goal arising from a purposeful defection by a center who was playing with his back to the goalie? [I suspect this number is 0]

   5.  How many times did the Hurricanes have a goal arising from a purposeful defection by a forward who was playing with his back to the goalie? [I suspect this number is1 -- that being Ray Whitney otherwise known as the Hurricanes Hulking Beast in front of the net or Mr. Net Presence]

    6.  How many power play goals did the Hurricanes get from their defensemen as a result of a howitzer blast?

   7.  How many times did a veteran over the age of 32 get a hooking, slashing, interference, or other non-aggressive penalty with less than four minutes in a period?

  8.  How many goals did the Hurricanes score when a player stole the puck in his defensive zone and went coast to coast and scored?  [I am thinking this number is 0]

  9.   How many times did a Hurricanes forward have a fantastic look or opportunity in front of the net late in a game and fail to lift the puck and thereby fail to score?   [My rough count is approximately 60 times]

 10.  How many times did the Hurricanes defensemen let a smaller forward plant a tent in front of the net and fail to clear the crease?

 11.  How many times did the puck wind up at the feet of defensemen who then failed to clear the puck  [my rough guess is at least 75 times]

  12.  How many times did the Hurricanes set up shop in front of the net and screen the goalie for a goal?

  13.  How many games did the Hurricanes out-skate their opponent from start to finish  [my rough guess is 4 or 5 times]

  14.  How many games did the Hurricanes play a complete 60 minute game and remain the dominant team the entire game?  [I think this number is 0; but surely no more than 2 at best]

  15.  How many games did the Hurricanes defense fail to clear the puck and instead played the puck to an opponent  [my rough guess is 75 times]

   16.  How many times did the Hurricanes freight train to the net and overwhelm the goalie and score  [my rough guess is 4 times]

   17.  How many times did the Hurricanes start the game with concrete skates and no energy?

  18.  How many games did the Hurricanes manage to grab defeat from the jaws of victory?

   19.  How many games did the Hurricanes rise to the occasion and make the superlative play that won the game?  [my rough guess is no more than 3 times]

   20.  How many times did the Hurricanes take a penalty in their offensive zone that killed the home crowd's energy and thereby sucked the all the air of the RBC?

   21.  How many times did veteran forwards slowly glide back on defense and leave the defense and goalie stranded?  [My rough guess is 60 t imes]

  22.  How many times did a veteran defenseman lose sight of his assignment and wind up dazed and confused in no man's land?

  23.  How many times was a defenseman crushed by a smaller forward?

  24.  How many times did a defenseman wreck another team's forward as that forward shot the gap with the puck through the crease?  [my guess is 2]

  25.  How many times on a 2 on 1 did the player with the puck try one pass too many and not get a shot off?  [my guess is 30]

 26.  How many games did the same veterans make the same mistakes they had made in consecutive games?

 27. How many times did the coaches and commentators say after a defeat:  (1) we need to get players to crash the net;  (2) we need to get ugly goals;  (3) we need players to be more physical;  (4)  we need to get players to take more shots on the net;  (5) we failed to get the puck out of our zone;  (6) we need players to gain speed through the neutral zone?

28.  What are the best +/- statistics for the forwards and for the defensemen?

29.  What are the worst +/- statistics for the forwards and for the defensemen?

30.  Which players are most frequently on the ice when a game-winning goal is scored against the Hurricanes?
