Scott Walker to have surgery; Cole and LaRose may return soon

More via link including some comments from JR regarding potential trades and transactions.
Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said today that forward Scott Walker would undergo surgery this week and probably be out a month.
Walker suffered an upper-body injury New Years Eve in the New York Rangers game at the RBC Center and did not play Saturday in New York.
Rutherford said forwards Erik Cole (upper-body) and Chad LaRose (lower-body) could return this week, adding that Cole is closer than LaRose to being able to rejoin the lineup. Forward Sergei Samsonov, who missed Saturday's game with an upper-body injury, should be back in practice this week.

I know this is Walker’s last year in Carolina, but he is a true character guy. I’m not fond of his contract, but I wouldn’t mind him on my team anytime. It sucks that being injured has been a staple in his years in Carolina.
I’m not sure his contract has this feature or not, but the Canes might be able to put him on LTIR and save some cap space.

Walker's Injury
From our seats, we saw the slash on Walker (which wasn’t called). Walker came to the bench and yelled out a very imaginative and descriptive invective (which I won ’t repeat). We knew something serious had happened to Walker. Sounds like a broken finger, hand, or wrist given the fact there was surgery scheduled. It could also be a shoulder; but unless the injury was not related to the slash, it seems less likely it is a shoulder. From the tone of his shout, I thought he was injured.
It’s always interesting to hear/see their post-play actions isn’t it? I had the pleasure of watching Tim flip off the opposing player…twice (he was smart enough to wait until the ref had his back turned).
My first thought was shoulder, but I didn’t see the slash you’re talking about. I know he’s had hand injuries before (last season), but it may not be related to this injury. Hopefully whatever it is heals quickly.

Hadn’t heard the 4 to 6 weeks part (I think Chip posted a month in his blog about the surgery). At his age, anything will take a little longer to heal so I wouldn’t expect to see him back much before the Olympic break. Which on second thought may be better-more time for him to heal.

Shoulder surgery for Walker confirmed this morning.
And Tlusty and Boychuk will be at practice Wednesday, likely to play Thursday in Nashville. (all sorts of tweets on this). Sammy is out. Not clear if La Rose and Cole are def’ly out for Nashville.

Walker looked pretty good to me tonight, was joking and laughing with our kids, and strange how Rosey stayed behind the bench on our on ice session, and i dont recall seeing Cole there tonight. Finally fair play to Jussi for asking how my beloved Newcastle united were doing this season and engaging in a decent conversation about real football.
Thanks for the information on Rosie, he was in my autograph session so I didn’t know whether or not he took the ice. And actually that’s not at all strange, usually any player who is out with an injury isn’t on the ice for the SWTC event.
Scotty Walker was in good spirits during our session as well (locker room).
Cole wasn’t there at all. Sergei was there but did not skate, he sat at the benches.
CORVO SKATED.
SISU
I was in the blue line group tonight as well and I was very happy to see corvo skating and he seemed to be very cheery.
As a matter of fact, all of the players seemed to be in pretty high spirits. I had a nice little conversation with Chad and he seemed very excited (like always).
Did anybody else look at the stick bag in the stick room in the locker room while waiting for pictures? It said “sticks for NASHVILLE” and then next to that, it said “26 &59?” Seems like both cole and larose could be in as early as the nashville game
Anything is possible as long as the mathematics of maximum points exist. It is possible mathematically that the Hurricanes could run the table and not lose another game. The probabilities of reaching the playoffs have been calculated at being less than 1% with over a 99% chance of not making the playoffs.
Here’s Sports Club Stats take on the Carolina Hurricanes playoff chances.
In fact, here we can see the season fading in graphical form.
Note that the y-axis documents that we were pretty much toast just over 30 days into the season. It can go all wrong just that quickly…and did.
I know it probably is impossble and it is intriguing to think about a #1 draft pick, however, I am still going to hold out for a turn around until the playoffs are definitely impossible. I hate losing and I hate watching teams that I like lose so thinking about losing just to get a draft pick doesn’t sit well and besides how do we know what the chemistry is going to be like even if we get that special player. We all thought this year was going to be great too, but chemistry is a hidden quanity no one can add as an ingredient, it just happens. So until the playoffs are officially done I gotta believe you keep going to find that winning edge with this team and think about the future when its time to think about the future.

I’m with you hoping for a turnaround on the team, even if it means loss of the best odds for a #1 pick. However that shakes out, it shakes out. We’re going to get a chance at a pretty good player, regardless.
I’m personally not harboring any hope at all for a playoff appearance and believe that the win/loss record is probably close to the 0.500 mark for the remainder of the year.
However, there is FAR more to hockey than just winning and losing. Seasons like this can be fascinating for fans in that we get sneak peeks at prospects and trade acquisitions for next year. Focusing on individual play, line interplay, and hopefully improved team play will get you through the remainder of the season.
It is an entertainment product, after all. All we can hope for is an entertaining product.
You know Tiger Woods always says that you can’t win the tournament the first day, but you can lose it. I guess the statement holds true for the Canes playoff chances.
