Jerome Samson Finally Gets the Call
The Carolina Hurricanes recalled Jerome Samson from the Albany River Rats late yesterday, to fill in for Eric Staal who will be on personal leave for the next couple of games. This will be the first NHL recall for Samson, the leading scorer for the Rats this season.
According to this Albany Times Union report, Samson was notified about the call up after the Rats' contest with the Adirondack Phantoms last night and the news at least provided a bit of happiness after a tough overtime loss. The forward has scored 123 points in 173 career AHL games and has 13 goals and 17 assists in 38 games for Albany this season.
Samson will be joining Albany teammates Patrick Dwyer, Brett Carson, Zach Boychuk, and Jiri Tlusty who have already joined the Canes. Of course, Brandon Sutter started the year with the Rats, so this will make six players who started the season in the minors, who will be in the Hurricanes lineup tonight.
We will have the game day preview up early this afternoon after we get news from the morning skate.

Just click on his name to get his details, (although there is not much there because this is his first recall)
6’0 195, right wing
I can not tell you about his speed.

Here is the entire Albany River Rats roster at AHL.com – Samson at the top, to compare with his teammates. He’s #17 as a Rat. He’ll be #67 tonight.
Here is the Samson bio/career page on AHL.com.

Just what do we need to do to make this happen?
Samson would look good in #17 for Carolina
Samson would look good in #17 for Carolina; but I’d been very, very happy if the number (#17) is hung from the rafters and the number retired; and if Samson were at Carolina with any number (67 is fine).
This. I really don’t want anyone else here wearing the #17. At least not anytime in the near future.

In all seriousness, I feel certain #17 at some time will be retired and hung from the rafters. I wish Brind’Amour had ended his career with the class of Wesley; but Brind’Amour did accomplish a great deal as a Carolina Hurricane. As much I want him to be traded and as soon as humanly possible is great with me, I don’t begrudge him his legacy.
My guess is nobody is likely to be assigned #17, not even Taylor Hall.
Samson Speed
I’ve watched many of the Albany Rats games on AHLlive. As a sidenote, AHLlive has a feature in its subscription that has the games in archive. In any event, from watching the games Samson is a good skater with fine speed. I haven’t seen him blow away the defense with speed the way Sutter and Boychuk, and now Tlusty can turn on the afterburners (and I should include Staal in the group of the blazing fast); but he keeps up with fast forwards. He has good acceleration and is in full stride quickly.
I am looking forward to seeing how Samson does for Carolina. He has a very solid all around game and it would be great to see him add some grit and speed, particularly to the fourth line (or perhaps even the third line if things worked out really well with him).
good speed, looked positionally sound, a right place, right time type player. Thats my very limited scouting report on him, plus I was about 10 drinks deep when I went to the game up there.
my friend actually labeled Boychuck as a mini ovechkin. He scored a goal coming down the wing, cut to the inside a touch to use the D-man as a screen and snapped a quick laser past the goalie.
Good Story....
Feel good story… undrafted kid paid his dues for a couple of years, and now gets a shot at the big time! Good luck Samson! Work your guts out and the fans will love ya for it!
Lines
Looks like (for right now)
Whitney, Cullen, Ruutu
Jokinen, Sutter, Tlusty
Boychuk, Dwyer, Kostopoulos
Brind’Amour, Yelle, Samson
Like button?
I really like that 2nd line. What they lack in muscle, they more than make up for in hockey sense. Should be very creative with lots of hustle; fun to watch. (I’ve been waiting for Sutter and Jussi for a while now).
TommyK ought to have fun as the vet with those 2 kids. He needs to plan on setting some screens for Zach, maybe pick up a goal on the rebounds.
Mo did say that we can expect the lines to be “fluid” so we’ll have to see where the go, but with 4 of the top 9 being players who started October in Albany, this really is a great opportunity to see into the future.

When are the lines not “fluid”? LOL This is like saying Kohl’s is having a sale.

Kind of sad that every time another Rat joins the team we get a little better. Just cuts down on all our “seasoned veterans” ice time. We need to put an end to this if we go on a hot streak, get our crappy old guys back in the lineup!
Hurricanes can lose as many games as they need to in order to hold fast to 30th place by putting having the slow, older veterans like Brind’Amour and Aaron Ward, and perhaps Yelle, against the other team’s first and second lines.
Watching the first lines of opponents scramble off the bench as fast as they can to feast on Brind’Amour and Yelle is like watching a keystone cops movie.
Lines
I agree about the second line. Sutter and Tlusty have great speed and all three have excellent vision of the ice and soft hands with the puck. I think these lines may well reflect much of what the lines look like next year (hopefully with the addition of Taylor Hall in the lineup — whether first or second line). Add Cole and perhaps a power forward, and the the team is really transformed. It looks to me like Cullen is the odd man out for next season; but who knows for certain.
I see a transformation for next season something like:
Whitney, Staal, Ruutu
Hall, Sutter, Jokinen
Tlusty, Boychuk, Cole or Boychuk/Tlusty/Cole
Samson, Dwyer, Kostopoulos
Maybe we will get lucky...
….and they will actually have to sign an FA of some importance just get to floor next season….who am I kidding, we will never sign an FA of any importance…..sorry for my wistful thinking.

one player shy (in the forwards) of JR’s “50 percent” comment.

“Reply” doesnt work here, maybe its a firefox thing, but in reference to some of the above comments predicting next years lines, and the following comment mentioning “that’d be about 20mil under the cap”…………..dont forget that with all this salary drop off, and youth infusing……we could potentially become major players in the free agent market.
and we’re on the tab for Rod’s contract no matter what (unless he’s traded).

Brind'Amour and a Trade
Maybe Brind’Amour could be bundled with another player from the Hurricanes for a player that a team well under the salary cap wants off their team. In theory, some team at the playoff bubble would want Brind’Amour’s leadership and experience. I wouldn’t if I were that other team’s GM; but opinions vary on the subject. I know I would trade Brind’Amour this instant if I could.
As stated before I don’t think the Canes will ever be major players in the FA market. JR pretty much created all these huge contracts with his offer to Sergei Federov back in the early days of the RBC (first season there??) and then got burned with Ozolinsh. Every time FA comes around JR says the words “small market team” that’s the sign that nothing is going to happen.
Ozo was acquired via a draft-day trade, then signed to his big deal, btw.

from ESPN Rumor Central
“Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray appears to be interested in trading for Carolina Hurricanes D Joni Pitkanen. That’s what the blog Senshot is hearing, adding that he could be a replacement for Filip Kuba.
The Hurricanes are certainly looking to dump players, and GM Jim Rutherford as said the trade market had begun to move. Chances are, the Senators will have to send over draft picks and prospects because at this point that’s all the Hurricanes may want."

I don’t believe anything that comes out of Ottawa, ever. The land that Garrioch ruined.

Check out Maurice’s audio after practice. The way he describes the kids’ enthusiasm (I quote: Sutter’s still excited!) is infectious.
And for the record, on Sutter, I think for us Caniacs, the feeling’s mutual.
He also talks about his experience with Tlusty. Describes him as similar to Jussi Jokinen for his smarts and great hands. And still only 21.
Gleason for the "C" :

Sutter needs to be on the first line not Cullen. Sutter has played better than Cullen not sure about that decision.
Staal will be the next CAPTAIN........get over it!
Article on Samson and Daniels

This article says a lot both about Samson and about Daniels. I think it shows Daniels’ character that he is so caring about his players.
