Checkers Open AHL Preseason in Norfolk Tonight
With all the excitement on the Hurricanes send-off game this afternoon, don't forget that the Charlotte Checkers open their preseason tonight in Norfolk, VA, where they face the Admirals, the AHL affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Game starts at 7:30.
To follow the game with live updates, you can head over to the Admirals facebook page or their twitter account @NorfolkAdmirals.
After the jump, some information on who made the trip and another couple links.
From those watching practice Thursday in Charlotte before they headed up by bus to Virginia, these were the lines Coach Jeff Daniels was working with, including Zach Boychuk centering the top line:
Forwards:
Jared Staal - Zach Boychuk - Chris Terry
Jacob Micflikier - Oskar Osala - Matthew Pistilli
Riley Nash - Mike McKenzie - Matt Kennedy
Brad Herauf - Cedric McNicoll - Matt Beca
Defensemen:
Elgin Reid - Brett Bellemore
Ethan Graham - Trevor Hendrikx
Goaltenders:
Mike Murphy
Bobby Goepfert
Here is the entire Training Camp roster, (with jersey numbers!)
Jon Matsumoto, Nick Dodge, Casey Borer, Jerome Samson, Nicolas Blanchard and Bryan Rodney did not make the trip, as Coach Daniels is most focused on the "bubble" guys. McNicoll also is not there, and Stefan Chaput might be playing in his slot.
The Checkers host the Admirals for a 1:30 matinee Sunday at their practice rink in Indian Trail. For more information and background on the Checkers Camp, they've set up a new blog called Checkers Chatter.

Preseason – Guess that’s the standard in the Southeast.

More important
then ever to follow the AHL team, as a number of players could be up here at any time. There was of course always chances for the team to need a Rat (lol) but now with the amount of near ready or ready NHL players on the affiliate squad we need to keep a close watch on how the boys are doing.
So I just think it’s a little lame that we have to follow the enemies’ thread for info. Just saying.
I hear ya. It’s a preseason game – Apparently once we get to regular season this will improve. The Checkers will tweet a bit, but for the real play-by-play (like the Admiral tweeter saying “Albany” then correcting himself quickly on the next tweet) this is pretty low budget.

The Checkers website in general is pretty weak. They sure don’t update very quickly every thing is usually old news thats on there. They also never post their interviews!!
Carolina Hurricanes! Your 2011 Stanley Cup Champions!
Every now and then they do put up some nice pictures.

Boychuk scores to make it 2-0, then they score 2 minutes later. 2-1 in the second.

If we WOOOOO when the Canes score, do we need to come up with something different when the Checkers score?
Maybe CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
well then…CHOOOCHOOOO
the oscar osala train is in, and its now 3-1
(have they scored more goals tonight than the canes did all preseason?)
Not Sunday, but they will for every regular season game.

Checkers going on 55 secs up on a 5-on-3 now. Sounds like Admirals are overwhelmed.

Goepfert is pretty much the ECHL Florida Everblades goalie, once Pogge gets back.

Now i feel even worse
here i missed this and sigh i did join the Checkers chatter, but guess what ? nothing really there …Now and while i understand the basis of how low budget some aspects of an AHL team is or can be…but this rather & grossly disappoints me that this issue was NOT addressed when the Canes org & the Checkers org came together…I did tweet my feelings ( and no i didn’t get all ugly on them) left and email for MsTera Black & joined the Checkers Chatter…but i has to admit they sure do things a whole lot different than the canes do, but they probably don’t have the “budget” . i did get a laugh & gigle as my grandson tweeted me a pic of one of the new cheer squad the checkmates…anbd he asked if she looked pregnant…kids…where do they get this from??? in closing…good job HM2…and this spoiled rotten fan thanks you !!

Minnesota Signs Theodore
Jose Theodore signed by Minny as backup after Josh Harding’s injury. Kind of relevant to us as we will probably be playing him either Thursday or Friday.
Theodore is not joining Wild in Helsinki
from what I read on Twitter, Theodore won’t be joining the Wild in Helsinki. He is still working out, and I think that is with an AHL team.
you are correct. He’ll start in Houston, not going to Helsinki.

Good news, maybe the Canes will be able to feast on Khudobin or whoever their AHL goalie is. Unless Backstrom is playing Back-to-Back.
gee we can hope then huh ??
Thanks Jussi…
