Hurricanes Reassign Brett Carson To Charlotte
The Carolina Hurricanes have sent defenseman Brett Carson back to the AHL, assigning him to the Charlotte Checkers Sunday. He was a healthy scratch in all four games with Carolina.
Here is the release from the team:
HURRICANES REASSIGN BRETT CARSON TO CHARLOTTE
Defenseman has yet to make NHL season debut
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has reassigned defenseman Brett Carson to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Carson, 24, was recalled from Charlotte on Oct. 16, and was a healthy extra for Carolina’s games at Vancouver, San Jose, Los Angeles and Phoenix during his recall. The Regina, Sask., native was also with the Hurricanes during the team’s two regular-season games against Minnesota in Helsinki, Finland, but did not play. Carson (6’4", 210 lbs.) played in three games with the Checkers after being assigned to the AHL on Oct. 9.

Up Coming Decisions by Jim Rutherford
Jim Rutherford is going to have some difficult decisions to make about the roster now that Tlusty’s conditioning stint is about to expire. With the team’s play and 4 wins, 3 losses record, all the players on the roster have shown they are NHL ready. I like how Dalpe and Bowman are playing and think they have a great future with the Hurricanes. I wonder, however, if they will be re-assigned to Charlotte. On the other hand, O’Sullivan and Samsonov seem to play quite similar styles, so I wonder if that would argue for re-assigning O’Sullivan. I personally would be surprised if O’Sullivan is sent down given play and NHL experience.
I’ve noticed Dalpe has been playing wing over the past couple of games. I wonder if they might try switching him and TK, giving that line a little more potential scoring punch.
Whatever they do, they need to keep an extra forward up so they can sit Sammy every other game. If we do that and he continues scoring every 1st game back from being scratched, he is going to have 30+ goals in less than 40 games!
If Staal can play like he did in LA on a nightly basis, he will be the 100 point player we all expect him to be!

My guess is Dalpe and Bowman both back to Charlotte for some well-deserved minutes and roles, as Mo goes with the vets. Lookout Charlotte’s opponents for the next stretch of games, if so.
Wild card chance that O’Sullivan runs the waiver gauntlet (my bet is that he’d find no takers) and one of those rookies gets to stay. Coach’s pick, if so.
Call-ups for the inevitable injuries will be somewhat situationally based, but hottest forward that meets the criteria will get the call.
Will be that way until the first trading opportunity arises anyway (December?).
We have a lot of assets…and yet are still disbalanced and very much a work in progress as a team.
I personally like these kind of seasons as a fan. Lots of facets to track.

i have to admit
that for Carson’s wallet being a “Healthy Scratch” got a wee bit fatter as in getting paid at the NHL level but in ordere for the guy to keep his edge so he can play at the nhl level he needs ICE Time….gee after seeing my argument For Carson makes me oh so glad…I’m NOT JR,Mo or Ron Francis…man the choices they have to make all but on a daily basis…I’d have to have a truck load of tums…but as AD pointed out to me yesterday…the Canes did call him up for " insurance" purposes…but still…gee do i sound sorta, kinda selfish ?
Thanks again for letting me have my say…have a good day & enjoyable week…
Everytime you write off the Hurricanes,
They make You Look Bad!!
So I’m assuming this is for Tlusty who should be back from his conditioning stint pretty soon. Hopefully the surgery is fully healed, but it was probably a good move to have him get some minutes in charlotte, than to have him traveling everywhere. But we only have 6 dmen on the roster now. Dalpe might end up going down too eventually if Tlusty is all healed up.
Tlusty technically never left the roster and was only on a “conditioning loan” to the Checkers, so the roster move is not to make room for him to return.
Instead, they are simply cutting back to the minimum needed to field a team, presumably for budgetary reasons (pay Carson’s AHL rate for his two-way contract instead of his NHL rate) and to give everyone ice time instead of making them sit on press row, with Charlotte being so close.
So, Carson takes us down to only six D-men, but we still have 14 forwards on the roster, counting Tlusty. So, presumably there are still two forwards yet to be named that are Charlotte-bound, as well.
