Hurricanes Recall Steven Goertzen From Albany
The Carolina Hurricanes will not be playing short a forward again tomorrow night in Calgary. The team just announced the recall of forward Steven Goertzen.
Goertzen, (6'2, 215), was signed over the offseason by the Canes and played previously in the Coyotes organization. He has six goals and seven assists in 45 games with the River Rats so far this year. Last season he had two goals and two assists while playing for Phoenix. The 25 year old is known as a hard-nosed player and should toughen up the fourth line a bit.

I found he played in one pre-season game on 9/21 before getting cut on 9/22.
Wonder why they called him up before Samson?

But Samson was a 4th liner – tough on the boards. Worked with Brindy, no?
Also found this on Goertzen - got his first NHL goal for the Coyotes against the Canes on Feb 9, 09. IIRC, That was on the roadtrip from hell…before the ship got turned around last spring.

Maybe it’ s just a “what the heck, let’s see what we got” kind of thing.
He’ll energize the fourth line, if nothing else.
pshh, that line is the skating dead. Brindy and Yelle are done. You don’t wake up what’s dead, you bring down whatever you stick there. Glad to see a new face, shame it get’s stuck in a turd right off.

Don’t know about that. Friskiest we’ve seen Brind’Amour all year was when he had two kids for wings.
You just can’t beat enthusiasm. And, it’s infectious.
Somehow Brind’Amour and frisky just don’t go together.

Maybe I was the only one, but the multi-year deal requirement was a little surprising. We had all talked about him signing one year deals until he wanted to retire. I hadn’t heard the multi-year deal thing until just then.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
That’s just wishful thinking on our part.
If I’m Whitney, of course I want the multi-year deal. That way the money flows, even if injury strikes.
Plus, no having to move the family more than once.
Now, whether he gets it, anywhere or here, remains to be seen.
It’s all money. Shorter term, more money. Longer term, perhaps less with the added risk on the team’s part.
I can’t blame him for wanting a multi-year deal either but JR needs to take a step back and look at the last player in his late 30s he extended a lengthy contract to. Brind’amour had seemingly had a Renaissance himself a few years ago and here we sit.
Regardless of what happens to Whitney this year, I don’t think its wise for JR to re-sign him to a multi-year contract unless it is heavily front loaded in payout and an average of less than 3 mil against the cap.
I think some of it is part of the dance. Ray needs to see what he’s worth out there. It’s not a small deal for him to agree to waive his NTC.

I’d love to get Voynov, Tuebert, or Hickey for Whitney. All 3 of these D have great potential to become top-4 D-men. I’d rather have any one of them than LA’s first pick.
Colten Tuebert is a hulking stay-at-home guy (6’3", 185lb) who is well known for laying out huge hits. He is not very offensively gifted, however he is exceptional in his own zone. Thomas Hickey is the polar opposite, an offensive dynamo with great vision and playmaking skills while still remaining a smart defensive player. Voynov is the middle of the road with sound offensive and defensive ability but still a potential top-4 guy. LA is quite high on Voynov though, I don’t know if they would give him up.
Per Darren Dreger's latest Q&A Article:
Geoff, Yorkton, ON: Any other players besides Ray Whitney and Matt Cullen on their way out of Carolina? I have heard Joe Corvo’s name as well. What would Carolina expect back and which teams have interest in the Canes’ players?
Darren Dreger: Walker, Ward, Alberts, Yelle, Wallin, Legace. The Carolina Hurricanes are rebuilding with Eric Staal, Cam Ward, and potentially the first overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft to lead the construction. A number of teams have interest in the players both you and I have identified. I know at least one team is prepared to give up a first rounder and a prospect for Whitney.
Sounds like that would be the baseline price for Whitney.
Alberts
I will say it again…I think losing Alberts is a mistake. The guy doesn’t always grab headlines, but he’s a solid force and is top 10 or so in the entire NHL in hits. Gotta keep him.
Alberts isn’t going anywhere. He’s contracted for ‘10-’11 too at a cap hit of 1.05 mil. Much better than Wallin’s hit of 1.725.
Chip is tweeting that Corvo is “probable” for tomorrow night. Maybe this is silly, but why not rotate 7 d-men through since Corvo probably isn’t in game shape yet? Why bring up Goertzen?
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
Maybe because he’s just “probable”, meaning they have to see how he is in the morning.
If so, Goertzen is insurance. Or, maybe we have another forward that’s playing hurt.
You just have an answer for everything today don’t you?! LOL

No worries. Snowbound (until late this afternoon) with little to do but read and post.
Besides, I happen to claim the working title of “Answer Man, your question, please!” in other fields besides hockey, so kind of can’t resist an unanswered question. I simply have to know.
Navigating multi-variable strategic decision matrices is what I do for a living, so it’s fun to also “think like a GM” on occasion for recreational purposes.

I think it’s a must to get Goertzen in the lineup to replace Rosey’s spot. I just don’t think they can skate 11 forwards and double-shift or shorten the bench again.
Perhaps a defenseman will be scratched or perhaps Carson gets returned if Joe’s a go?

Agreed-shortening the bench isn’t a great move. I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to (potentially) shorten the bench from the D end either though.

I will say from what I’ve seen from Corvo in practice, and given the nature of the type of injury he had, I think he’ll be fine, but I could be overly optimistic on that one.

"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."

I agree. The good news is he’s been skating a full practice for quite some time, I just think with him it’s more of an issue of getting up to game speed versus being concerned over whether or not the injury has healed, like you would be with a knee or shoulder or concussion.

I don’t want to put words in her mouth, but I highly doubt she would go out on a limb like that and put something down as factual (rather than just her opinion) without having anything to back it up. She’s way too OCD about stuff like that to pull it out of the air.

Inside information may be a bit strong-that sounds a little too James Bond-esque for the situation. :) But she wouldn’t let it get published (and neither would her editor) without some sort of back-up. Whether that’s a gossipy RBC Center worker or just her own observations, I couldn’t tell you.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
I know I sound a little snarky, and I do enjoy her writing, but my experience with the Independent Weekly is that they’re a little sloppy when it comes to precision. I’ve seen several articles where players’ names were spelled wrong, or photos were tagged as the wrong person, and that’s just a general lack of attention to detail.
The reason I asked about the “insider” information was in specific reference to her comments about Tuomo that Cory referenced above. When he was injured, the “official” word was upper body but several broadcast media sources said he had a shoulder injury and even Forslund, while he couldn’t come right out and explicitly say shoulder, talked around it enough that anyone who knew the situation knew what he was implying by his choice of words.
So for Kate to come out and say this:
For hard-core hockey fans, it was just another day at the rink. But the fight also extracted a price: Ruutu suffered a head injury that has kept him sidelined for eight games and counting, and his participation in next month’s Vancouver Olympics is in jeopardy.
and this:
When Tucker and Ruutu revisited the dispute earlier this month, Tucker’s blows to Ruutu’s head near the end of the fight left the Finn glassy-eyed and slack-jawed and sent him back to the dressing room with a possible concussion. (The ever-secretive Maurice regime, however, is still referring to it as an “upper body injury.”)
leads me to believe she has access to some pretty specific information that no one else in the media has, or she’s playing fast and loose with the facts here. Just my opinion of course, and I’m NOT privy to any inside information (other than gossipy RBC Center workers and my own observations) and could very well be wrong, but I find her version hard to believe.

I remember when we played Ottawa (aka Jarkko’s team) and their announcers were so specific it was Tuomo’s shoulder that I assumed they had it straight from Big Bro Ruu…. But your points about the specificity are excellent.

Perhaps a little snarky, but I do get where you’re coming from. :) Although FWIW I haven’t had the same experiences with the Weekly that you have (inaccuracies and whatnot).
I agree with you-it does seem rather strange that her take on things is so much different than what other sources said. I do think it was/is a shoulder injury and would go so far to say that her conclusion was wrong. But I can guarantee you that she wouldn’t risk her position at the Independent (and other places as well) by making something up just for the sake of doing so.

Well first off, I’m really very sorry I spoke poorly and perhaps out of turn about someone you know and put you in an awkward position (she’s fortunate to have you as a friend). And I may be painting with a broad brush that doesn’t apply when it comes to Kate’s specific reporting and her accuracy. So on that I stand corrected and apologize.
But needless to say those specific comments caught my eye in a big way, and coupled with some other things I’ve seen regarding their coverage of the Canes in general (some of which in all fairness may not have come from her directly, you know, when you see references to “Ron” Brind’Amour and “Jani” Pitkanen and Tuomo “Rutu” and a picture is tagged as being Erik Cole when it’s really Joni, stuff like that), it’s tended to make me a little skeptical in general about their coverage. Which is unfortunate, because I think it’s great that the Canes coverage is making its way into these types of publications. I think it’s good for the sport.

No apologies are necessary LTD. No hard feelings on my end. Like I said, it probably wasn’t the best move on my part to have gotten involved in something that I had a personal tie to. :)
I think it’s good that you’re skeptical-you can’t believe everything you read. And those mistakes are really bad, but seem very unlike her. But then again, we’re all human and mistakes do happen.

Kolvachuk, not as a rental, but with an extension, makes so much more sense for the LA market than Whitney. They have the cap room, and badly need a “name” player for their offense.
Waddell would have to spend what would certainly be self-destructive amounts of money to hold Kolvachuk, and even that might not be enough, since there is no semblance of a team gelling in Atlanta anytime soon. LA, on the other hand, is on the brink of something interesting with all that talent they’ve been acquiring…if they can ever figure out just what to do with it, that is.
By the way, guys, I’ve been really enjoying the From the Rink posts. Please keep up the Twitter alerts, since that’s how I find them. :-)
