Will USA Celebrate 30th Anniversary With Win? Super Sunday: Open Thread
It's a great day to be a hockey fan. Not only are the top teams in the Olympics battling it out today, but there are also intense rivalries between these teams which make things even more interesting.
Russia vs the Czech Republic at 3 on NBC
Canada vs USA at 7:40 on MSNBC
Finland vs Sweden at midnight on MSNBC
Of course, the Hurricanes will be well represented as Tim Gleason battles against Eric Staal in the marquee matchup at 7:40 tonight. Team USA will have their hands full, but playing at home in front of thousands of rabid fans might not be advantageous to the Canadians if things don't go their way. Will the pressure be too much for the home team? Will fans turn on their heroes?
After that game, Tuomo Ruutu and Joni Pitkanen lead Team Finland against Team Sweden. There is no love lost between these teams either.
On the 30th anniversary of USA's miracle on ice against the Russians, will there be another miracle tonight? Some feel that there is enough talent on this American team that they won't need a miracle to win. We will see.
Use this thread as the open thread for all of today's games. We will create another open thread if necessary.

Jen found a good article and posted it on the other thread. Gleason is not much of a hockey fan?

Hopefully, more folk will know who he is after tonight.

It’d be great if both the U.S. and Finland won today. Plus, I"m kind of a closet Russian fan, so I’d like to see them win. But that doesn’t really matter, I’m rooting for Finland to all the way.
Here's to all us girls who love hockey...and the men who play it.

Eh, not so sure about that. I know Tim is Superman and all, but can he hold the entire team on his shoulders? Canada has the most talent out of all the teams, however after the Swiss game, who knows if they can play a cohesive game.
I would love to see the USA squad win; I sincerely hope we kick the you-know-what out of those canadians today, Eric Staal and all!

Timmy is just a small part of what must fall into place for the USA to win tonight. Lets hope all the other parts of the team show. Again ,Miller must stand on his head.. or take a few pointers from Tripp
The “Tim is Superman” statement was more for the girls of CC than anything else. Although Tim’s D prowess is going to be needed.

“Im not looking for the best players, Craig. Im looking for the right ones.” -Herb Brooks, Miracle on Ice.
This speaks volumes to what USA has done this year. They didnt necessarily take the best players but they took the players most likely to succeed in their role. You’ve got to have a checking line/grinding line, and I think Canada lacks that. Look at their roster. The only forwards that could maybe succeed in a 3rd/4th line role would be Morrow maybe and Iginla, only b/c Iginla’s tough as nails. Perry’s probably pretty tough too, but after that, thats it for the forwards. A lot of their players are gonna be playing out of their elements. Now USA? Drurys a perfect 3/4th line center for us, he’ll feel right at home. Callahan will too. Malone’s a tough guy, Browns a tough guy…… I just think that we have more of a cohesive unit, while Canada has an all star team. But all that offense may be shut down, or at least stifled by a solid grinding line. I like our defense a lot too, again we’ve got a good mix of defense and offense. Lastly, as I said on an earlier post, I’d rather have Miller than Brodeur for this game. Brodeur may be the best to ever put the pads on, but I just think hes maybe lost a little bit of the fire and hunger that you have to have. Maybe I feel that way b/c everytime I see him in a big game its against the Canes and he always loses. Im sure Brodeur wants this very bad, I just feel like Millers youth will provide him with more hunger than Brodeur……or maybe its just that Miller doesnt eat nearly as much as Brodeur? Either way, USA 5-3, empty netter.

I’m going to go off on a little rant here. Sorry if I offend anybody, but it must be said.
The NHL needs to find itself a new TV partner other than NBC. NBC has the opportunity to showcase a major sport to America during primetime. Instead they are showing figure skating. I can’t put the whole blame on NBC, part of it should fall on America. Has America become the land of p*ssy? How is it that gay figure skating is more of a draw than US/Canada hockey? Why doesn’t NBC try to grow the sport of hockey? They have a golden opportunity and have the game on MSNBC. This is just ridiculos and the NHL needs to work out a deal with another major network. Also, America needs to stop being pansies – turn the TV to a great, physical game of hockey. Stop watching the fruits in glitter skating around the ice, stop feeding the stupid American Idol’s of the world, and get back to being the great (manly) country we use to be.
Again, sorry for the offensive language.

The official answer is that women determine what’s on TV in many households, and they apparently prefer ice dancing to hockey.
However, I suspect a few of you familiar with this blog recognize that may be painting the fair sex with too broad of a brush.

I was simply trying to state an observation of America’s society. It is something that could and will be debated from many different perspectives. I’m am sorry for offended any of the women here, but I was trying to make a point.

You can watch figure skating without a) being a woman or b) being gay. Heck, you can even be a figure skater without falling into either of those categories. That’s a really broad statement to make and is not even close to being accurate. I was also unaware that a country had to be “manly” to be great. Your point is a decent one, but the way you went about making it wasn’t the best choice IMO.

Staal was crushing people with hits. It would be amazing how good Staal would be if he added the element of trainwreck hits to his play. I have been convinced that Staal still underestimates his own ability. On the skill set side of things, there are few players with his size, speed, and eye hand coordination. My hope is that part of what Staal will bring back from the Olympic experience is that he can compete night after night with the Crosbys, Ovechkins and Malkins, etc. and can be every bit as good.

…their commercials for themselves have all been the anchors talking about why they matter. I think it’s MSNBC’s way of begging the Olympic audience to care about their channel when the Olympics is over. =)

Staal has played a good game so far. The whole US team is forechecking very well and to me they look faster than Canada.

got quite as soon as you came in Bob. You’ll never know why, lol.
Staal has had the best game for Team Canada thus far.

Malone and the Hurricanes
I keep thinking how much Malone or a player like Malone would turbo-boost the Hurricanes next season.
I’d be scared to send JJ out their for a shift right now. He looks terrified to do anything. He needs to get a big hit or something to get himself in the game.
he’s had two very timely poke checks, but i do agree. His eyes are a bit big right now.

He has no value if he’s not physical and not shooting the puck. He’s doing neither.

Jack Johnson
Agreed. Jack Johnson does have some incredible skill sets. I am guessing that JJ will be traded at the deadline. It is going to be interesting to see what transpires in that regard. I still have this hunch that the Hurricanes may well see JJ some time in their future.
The Gleason trade, however, looks better and better and it is virtually impossible for me to imagine the Hurricanes without Gleason.
Crease violation.

marleau (sp) was apparetly in Miller’s crease too long. They just move the face off out side the zone. I guess a super minor goaltender interfernce call

Toews has been impressive also. I really like how that kids play.

I’m trying to figure out why Staal gets bashed on by Cane fans. Whats wrong with Staal having a great game even scoring a hat trick and USA still win?

Exactly. Tonight he is the enemy. Just like Ruu and Pits would be if they played the US.

Gleason is the kind of player every team has to have to win. It is interesting and somewhat funny that as the tournament progresses the commentators are realizing how good Gleason is. I think he will lay some more Gleasonesque intense hits during the next phase of the tournaments and the commentators will be saying how it shows the wisdom of picking Gleason.
And the Emperor shall reign.. =D

Why wouldn’t you Staal on the ice in the last 2 minutes? He was Canada’s best player on the ice and he doesn’t see any time in the most important crucial part of the game. I don’t understand that, but anyways – Go USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, unfortunately. :( Stupid sinus infection. I can take the stuffy/runny nose and coughing, but this time around I have some severe knife stabbing pain when I have my head in certain positions.
I’ve been laying around all weekend and I’m still exhausted.

Random thoughts:
Holy crap. That was more intense than any Game 7. And they have 3 more games….(at best). Where is this week going?
Brodeur looked human. Miller looked godly.
Welcome America – now you know why we love hockey.
So strange cheering when Orpik beat Crosby. So strange to scream: I love you Ryan Miller!
What an Olympic experience!!! Gleason needs more TOI, esp’ly in the PK – he was solid (except that one little give-away…)
Here’s the game stats for USA. Timmy finished even +/- with 14:19 TOI.
JJohnson led all D-men for TOI (what!?!?!) and finished at -1 (in the winning effort).
From the NHL.com recap
Maybe it was appropriate that Team USA came out for its Group A finale against Canada wearing replicas of the jerseys worn by the 1960 gold-medal winning team — because until Sunday night, that was the last American team to beat Canada in the Olympics.
Not any more.
And how many of you are old enough to remember that game? ………….waiting……Been awhile and way over due.

I am
I was a freshman in college. The hockey game was the talk of everything. After the Carter years, and the suckiness of the end of that decade, the Miracle on Ice game was really a kick to the psyche.
Go Canes!
I’m talking about the 1960 game (not 1980 Lake Placid). That – 50 years ago – was the last time USA beat Canada in Olympic competition….. half-a-century. How old are Burke and Wilson?

My .02
For those of you who believe Staal is a god and he plays his hardest for us and should be barred from any of our criticism, watch that game again and ask yourself if he plays that way for us? Then compare his role on that team with his role on ours. And be honest with yourselves, you may not like what you see. And no, I didn’t take the time to read the whole post from CC, I just wanted to throw in my .02.
Not buying it
HE may pace himself differently but not because of the short tourney, it’s because he wants the gold more. Nobody else has changed their game because of the short tourney. It’s a desire/committment thing to me. If that Staal from last night played for us, I would gladly be his biggest supporter/defender on CC, but he doesn’t, and it pisses me off to see that effort from him there and not in Raleigh.
I figured it was.
You say no one else has changed their game for the tourney, I would disagree. You have alot of guys who have turned up the intensity of their game. Iginla, for instance, seems to have found an extra gear ( a gear that must have slipped last night…..) as has Danny Heatley. You also have to account for the fact that he is playing a different role for Team Canada, and is not the primary defensive target. Also combine that with the fact that he is playing with much more skilled line mates, who already have built in chemistry ( a premium in the olympics) and you have alot of variables in play.

either way
I would like to see something close to that effort while he wears our sweater, and I don’t feel like we are getting that at all.
